Inappropriate?The book signings were offered to all of our speakers who are authors as well. We need to be more proactive next year to make sure our women panelists are responding to our offer.

Inappropriate?Yes, actively recruit them (women panelists) starting early and be persistent with backup choices if necessary. I have been to conferences that are at least 50% female so it can be done. You may just need to think outside of the usual suspects and even start a series of diaries on DailyKos asking for suggestions for female speakers. The community may be more aligned than you realize and provide really good suggestions. Plus, not many are setting up accounts here to give feedback so that is another avenue.
