The NewRelic agent is active any time the rails environment is spun up. In development mode the agent won't communicate with the RPM service, however in production mode it does. I can see where this would be a problem if you don't want backgrounddrb to be "managed" by the agent. We can rev the agent to switch off in the presence of an environment variable. Would this work for the way you use backgroundrb?
