Prequel to Head First Web Design?
I purchased Head First Web Design and I love it but it assumes a knowledge of html I do not have. What do I need to fill the gaps? There are a few books listed but I would like some advice...

Inappropriate?Hi Craig,
If you like the Head First series I would highly recommend Head First HTML with CSS & XHTML:

It starts from the beginning and will help you quickly get up-to-speed so you can dive back into Head First Web Design.
Kind regards,
Sarah

Inappropriate?Hi Craig,
I would recommend starting with Head First HTML with XHTML and CSS. This book is a really good place to start because it covers the basics and gives you the knowledge you need to move on to advanced topics.
You can check out a preview of the book from oreilly.com.
You might also be interested in the Introduction to HTML and CSS course from the O'Reilly School of Technology. This course starts at the beginning and works up to building a website. The course includes a free copy of Head First HTML with XHTML and CSS.
If you have any other questions about where to start, let us know.
Have a great day!
