Please disable caching in Coda's live preview!
Coda's live preview mode seems to cache the pages I'm working on (as Safari/WebKit do normally), which ends up confusing the crap out of me. Since there's no easy way to clear the cache from inside Coda (that I know of), I have to open up Safari or WebKit to do it. It'd be really nice if Coda just didn't cache stuff (or had an option to disable caching).

Inappropriate?Interestingly, Safari/WebKit is never supposed to load cached pages if you manually reload -- either by hitting "Reload" button or CMD-R.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.ht...
I'm suspicious! I always thought holding "option" while clicking reload (in Coda as well) forced a reload. Is it a placebo? I'm going to do some investigation. :) -
Wow, quick response! I've had intermittent trouble with "Reload" / Cmd-R in Coda; I spent a good 5 minutes earlier today trying to figure out why I couldn't see my changes only to realize I was seeing a cached copy.
I guess can't rule out a loss of my sanity, though. :-P -
Inappropriate?I've run into this issue as well, but it seems intermittent. I was going nuts yesterday working on some xml pages on my server and wondering why my changes weren't being reflected. I switched to [gasp] Textmate [/gasp] and it worked fine. I don't want to work in TM though, I love working in Coda.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?i'm surprised this issue isnt being adressed more actively; i'm still having cache issues with Coda. however, from what i've observed, webkit/safari are no more reliable, and are particularly fickle with .swf files.
i love coda too, but it sometimes makes things more confusing...
dont Panic?
I’m confused
-
Inappropriate?grrrrrrrrr. does anyone know where webkit/safari actually caches swf objects? i'll just delete from the finder, but i can't find the damn cache.
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?I have just upgraded to the newest beta of Safari 4 and the caching in Coda has become more apparent than ever before. Even after quitting the app itself and relauching, it is still caching information from hours ago!
Cabel is right (and a God for finding this out) holding the "Alt" key while clicking on the reload button works perfectly.
On the other hand you cant hold the Alt key and use Cmd+R the combo just does nothing.
Strange but at least part of an answer.
I’m relieved at least
-
Inappropriate?Oh and even more interesting is that the issue doesn't appear cached in the Safari preview. That really made it wierd!
-
Inappropriate?I take it back, the issue is still there, after every combination of keys along with reloading still now solution.
(Still perfect in Safari though)
I’m down
-
Inappropriate? It seems like there is no way to clear cached SWFs. Maybe it's because I'm currently using Safari 4 beta, but even if I clear the cache in Safari, I still see the cached SWF in Coda—even after relaunching.
This sucks.
Please, please, please give us something like the Safari Develop menu!
I’m frustrated as a fox
-
Inappropriate?Bernard, thats not entirely fair, we knew what we where getting when we downloaded and installed a Beta version of Safari, the issue is not just related to Coda, its pretty obvious the issue is with Safari and WebKit too.
Anyway, I think I will go back to Safari 3, shame though work is more important than the Top Sites feature, or the funny tab bar for that matter.
Thanks to Cabel for isolating the issue so quickly, much appreciation.

Inappropriate?Sorry, I should have mentioned that I had this problem long before the Safari 4 beta (with SWFs).
On a sidenote, I am loooving Safari 4. Don't really care for the Top Sites feature but the new Web Inspector is awesome, and I'm starting to like the new tabs more than the old ones. -
Inappropriate?fwiw, i added a ?1 to the end of the URL of the swf object to fool webkit into thinking it was dealing with something dynamic and non-cacheable. i didn't really do a huge amount of experimentation to confirm it worked in every case, but it definitely seems to have helped. ymmv.

Inappropriate?I ran into the same problem while trying to get updated images to load on the page I was viewing in the Preview panel. Clicking the reload button to the left of the address bar wouldn't work. Alternatively, I right-clicked in the Preview window and click 'Reload' on the menu that appeared. This reloaded everything perfectly every time. I'm not sure why doing it on the context menu as opposed to the reload button would differ.

This works for me too. I'm just using the trial version to see if it's worth getting for the novice web developer. I really like it so far. I am also using Safari 4. -
Inappropriate?Yeah, I'm having this issue right now. So frustrating! Current version of Coda (1.6.3), current Safari 4 public beta. "?1" suggestion doesn't work, context menu reload doesn't work, "alt" key while hitting reload doesn't work... Even when emptying Safari's cache, Coda's cache remains.
Is there a manual way to delete Coda's cache? Where is it located? Even an Applescript or terminal hack would be OK with me!
Alternately, can we confirm that reversion to Safari 3 is the only real fix for this? I'd hate to lose Safari 4 but it's better than taking this hit in dev productivity!
I’m frustrated, quickly becoming pissed off.

Alt-click on the reload button works fine for me. I'm using an internal Webserver for the preview, though. Maybe it's not working with files served through the filesytem instead of an apache server? -
Inappropriate?I've noticed this seems to have something to do with not having the site's local preview URL set as something different than what you are actually previewing with... perhaps you're using "localhost" and you defined the site's preview URL as the computer's name or IP? I found myself having to Opt+Click Refresh over and over again until I realized this.
I’m ok
-
Inappropriate?I've had this issue come up several times. I have emailed support and their stance thus far is as Cable stated above, but I'm glad to see I'm not alone and experiencing this caching issue.
I’m bummed
-
Inappropriate? This is starting to make me batty. Without preview caching working accurately, live preview becomes useless in the workflow. My partner and I saw this happen several times today. His remark was, "We just can't use Coda to view our changes".
I really hope Panic address this in a bug fix or the next iteration. I can happily screencast Monday to show this occurrence isn't just some fluke. While it doesn't happen every time, it does occur with some frequency.
I’m getting frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Just to clarify, this is a Safari 4 beta bug, not our bug. If you downgrade back to 3 Coda will work as expected. Hopefully Apple will fix this issue before Safari 4 goes final.

Thanks for this bit of info. I wasn't aware of this and now that you mention it, the problem arose around the time that I upgraded to Safari 4. I've actually found a couple of small annoying bugs in Safari 4 that I hope they address soon. -
Thx will for pointing this out. -
Inappropriate? If you develop with PHP or another scripting language, you can do something like this, which so far as I can tell has fixed my issues:
style.css?sec=<?php echo date('hsMY'); ?>
You could also do a random number or something, but the point is that it's loaded fresh every time.
I’m relieved
-
Inappropriate? This problem plagues me daily now. The only reason I view the preview now is to click on the view in browser button. After that all I do is refresh my browser to see the changes I make. If it's PHP, I just leave MAMP running and do the same thing. I own and use CSSEdit and Espresso so I hope the Coda team can get a leg up on MacRabbit because Espresso is a real masterpiece.
-
Inappropriate?Bloqhead, did you read the above post about it being a Safari 4 problem? I wasn't aware of this. This makes me rest better.
I’m happy with the quick response. Thanks Will!
-
Yeah, I actually saw it after I made a reply. It's a real relief. I hope Apple fixes Safari 4's issues soon. Honestly if they do that, it will eliminate the caching issue for Coda and restore my trust and love for Coda to 110%. -
Inappropriate?Something new about the cache issue in Coda? Safari 4 is final now and it would be nice to update. And the thread about this issue exist since 11 month! Long before Safari 4 Beta was available. Or do we have to wait for Coda Vers. 2 ?
I’m frustrated
-
The guys are at WWDC so we haven't had time to test deeply, but at first glance we were hopeful it was actually fixed in Safari 4 Final.
Is it still happening for you after installing Safari 4 Final? What are the specific symptoms?
(UPDATE: Wade mentions that he talked to some of the WebKit guys at WWDC, and this bug may have actually been fixed in Safari 4 Final. Are you still seeing it?) -
Inappropriate?Hi Cabel!
There are special WebKit guys? ;-)
I didn't test it till now. I reinstalled Safari 3 last month and i don't want to install Safari 4 again until this issue is fixed. ;-)
But it seems that the reload problem exist before Safari 4. Thats why i asked about a fix ... -
Inappropriate? This caching bug is fixed with Safari 4 final.
That is all. :) -
Inappropriate?I am seeing cache problems in Coda again.
Safari 4.0.2, OS X 10.5.8.
I'm seeing an old swf in Coda, but Safari is using the right file. -
I am having the same issue.
Safari 4.0.3
OS X 10.5.8
Relaunched Coda and old SWF is still cached even after Safari displays current SWF after clearing cache.
??? -
Seeing the same thing here – loading an old SWF – Safari 4.0.3 / OS X 10.5.8
