same problem with dv1000. Can convert large video files to diff. formats, cant watch videos, just read emails. I realised that the problem was due to overheating. My solution, take a large metal tray of something and place the laptop on it. This will work as a heat sink. Prop up the laptop so that the hot air has a vent to escape. AND, this is the most important, use a 21 inch fan to blow air at the laptop. Now, that what i did and could finally run it for 5 hrs continuosly to create a video dvd. Phew, somuch for a 'laptop'..never again HP...may you die in this recession...

I HAVE TWO DV8000'S THE PROBLEM IS THE RAM. UNTIL I UPGRADED THE RAM ALL WAS FINE, IF YOU UPGRADED THE RAM THAT IS THE PROBLEM, I GOT THE CORRECT RAM AT WWW.MEMORY-UP.COM, ALL IS FINE NOW. I UPGRADED FIRST WITH THE CORRECT DDR2 TOSHIBA RAM AND THERE WAS A CONFLICT CAUSING ALL THE PROBLEMS I HAVE READ. HOWEVER, THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF RAM FOR THIS UNIT, CHECK THE RAM INSTALLED TO CHECK WHAT YOU NEED, DDR2 RAM OR DDR. GOOD LUCK...

I am having the exact same problem with my dv1624nr (dv1000).
1.6ghz processor and can't convert mpg to avi....because it overheats and shutsdown....this is a 40mb mpg video file that i am trying to convert to divx avi file....fairly simple process.....and yes, i am using the correct software settings, codec, etc etc....trust me i know what i'm doing...this laptop sucks, it was good when i first got it.
I have 3 HP laptops and 1 Compaq Laptops. Compaq seems to be ok, but it's fairly new, 2 of my hp laptops have the overheating issue and the other 17" widescreen HP has a bad lcd....just went out one day and it's going to cost $300 to fix (HP must be smoking crack)
.....thinking about selling it to someone, but either i have to lie to them and tell them everything works fine (everything does work fine, except for the dreaded overheating disease) or tell them the truth and probably not sell it....either way, i'm screwed....f()ck HP...I will never buy another PC/Laptop from them.....

Another disappointed HP consumer....I said goodbye to my HP laptop today....same problems overheating...shutting down...a dual fan underneath helped for a bit...but it was just too much....it appears as if the hard drive is toast and no telling about the motherboard...the screen is now black.....I will not be purchasing another HP....Typing this from a Dell I am contemplating

PC Support techy:
perhaps you could help educate me on something i'm tracking with my dv5000 which has had overheating/random shutdown disease.
after the problems began i installed a small app to monitor the running temps of both cpu's, hard drive, etc.
i have used the hp ac adapter that came with the laptop until very recently when i switched it out with the hp ac adapter that came with the laptop docking station i also purchased from hp.
the watts are imprinted on the ac adapter blocks. the ac adapter that came with the laptop is 90W while the ac adapter that came with the docking station is 65W.
there is no discernible difference in performance but i have noticed that when using the 65W lower wattage adapter, the monitored temperature of the 2 CPUs is about 20 degrees F lower than when using the higher wattage adapter. the 65W adapter block seems to be hotter, but the CPU's seem to run cooler (altho the temps themselves are "hot")
am i imagining all this or does it sound logical?
would love to get feedback from someone who actually knows something about electronics, lol.
thanks.

Here is the manual you are looking for for a DV8000.
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/...
For the DV1000 the repair manual is
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/...
These are available on the HP website; just tricky to find.
Good Luck and let know how it works, but hearing from other people they are having mixed results even when HP does the repairs,

I have an HP Insiron laptop dv8000. It is doing the exact same thing. It suddenly shuts down, and cannot be powered on again until some time has passed. I believe it is overheating. I spent $1,300 on this laptop. It was a premium upgraded laptop(supposedly) when I bought it. I am furious. My warranty is expired. Does anyone know how I might fix this myself?

I have an hp pavillion dv1000 too. Same problem of shutting down, but even worse. When I bought the PC in USA, for US 950, the battery wasn`t working already. I was traveling around, so I couldn`t take it somewhere, `cause every 3 or 4 days I was somewhere else. When I finnaly got home, I contacted HP Brasil, and they where nice to tell me 30 min later that since I bought it in US, I needed to solve the problem there. Well, I wasn`t in US, and wouldn`t be there for a while. I finally figured that I could go online and talk to the representative online, which I did. After another hour talking, she said there was nothing she could do `cause my warranty was expired. I had no money to buy a new battery, so I had a laptop that I could only use with AC power... My dad figured out that there was nothing wrong with my battery, but he wasn`t able to make it work on the laptop.
8 months later my laptop acted weird after installing Yahoo Messenger, and from there on it started to give me the message that I needed to backup my documents because the HD drive had an error. 11 months later the laptop wasn`t turning on anymore. I bought a new HD drive and it was just fine again. A month later guess what? the AC power cord had problems, so I spend money on an universal cord so I could use my laptop again. Then, 14 months later it started to shut of. Bought a vent to use under the laptop and it helped, but it is getting worse. Tried to clean my vent, but these laptop is build so that you can`t take it appart, and pay HP to do it for you. Today, reading forums and all, I figured that you have to take everything appart to reach the vent. Isn`t that ridiculous?
I`m really frustrated, don`t know what to do. I definitely won`t buy another HP unless HP fixes this problem. Lots of other people have the same issues, and nobody can tell me how to fix this.
