Andrew Savikas replied on March 04, 2009 15:46 to the question "Missing Manual not opening" in O'Reilly Media:
Stanza is not required to read the Missing Manual App. I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble, this is the first time we've heard of someone having the trouble you described.
Those tools do appear for a few seconds, after which you should see the cover of the book. Please then try to tap the right side of the screen to get to the first "page" of the book.

Andrew Savikas replied on March 03, 2009 17:23 to the problem "iPhone App: "iPhone: The Missing Manual" crashes when attempting to change display font" in O'Reilly Media:
Hi Dave,
Via our contacts at Lexcycle, the company that we partnered with on this App (and the ones behind the Stanza App):
"This is a known bug. There was a font name available in iPhone OS 2.1 what was removes in OS 2.2, and we use the list of fonts that was available in 2.1. Unfortunately, the iPhone's reaction to trying to render a font that it can't find is to crash, rather than just falling back to a font that it does know."
"This issue is fixed in the current version of Stanza, so the next crop of stand-alone book apps won't experience it."
We do plan to update the App to incorporate this fix. In the meantime, please choose a different font.
Andrew Savikas replied on February 26, 2009 17:33 to the question "Why can't I buy the iPhone App version of iPhone: The Missing Manual in the Japanese iTunes App store?" in O'Reilly Media:
Hi JD,
We worked with Lexcycle, the company who makes the Stanza App, to build this one. The decision to not release in Japan is because apparently in Japan, the App seller is responsible for dealing with paying and accounting for sales tax; in all the countries where the App is available now, Apple handles all of the sales tax and VAT issues.
As we move forward with more Apps, we will re-evaluate the costs associated with processing sales tax for these transactions in countries where Apple does not already do so.
You may wish to purchase the "ebook bundle" of this book directly from our website, which includes an EPUB version that can be read on your iPhone using Stanza, as well as a PDF and a Mobipocket format version. You'll receive free updates to the book as well.
Andrew Savikas replied on February 12, 2009 17:29 to the question "How can I move Pogue's iPhone book from my iPhone to my MacBook?" in O'Reilly Media:
It's a bit of a hack, but you can do it pretty easily by just unzipping the App itself. There's instructions in this review. You may want to consider using the Bookworm ebook reader once you have the EPUB file.
Andrew Savikas replied on January 26, 2009 20:04 to the question "Descrepency in book purchase conditions?" in O'Reilly Media:
Hi Bill,
You're right, that is confusing. I did some research and while the majority of our Missing Manuals do indicate the 45-day trial period on the back cover, this one slipped through the cracks and the back cover wasn't updated during the last printing. We're making sure the wording is clarified in future printings.
Sorry about the confusing wording.

Andrew Savikas replied on December 30, 2008 22:44 to the problem "only in english?" in O'Reilly Media:
Hi danielchit,
The iPhone Missing Manual App is based on the Stanza App, which has an interface that has been localized for several languages, including Italian (so for example the text on the buttons appears in the correct language). That localization is independent of the book content, which in this case is the English version of the iPhone Missing Manual.
I agree that it's confusing, and we are updating the description to try and be more clear that the book content itself is currently only in English. If and when we translate the content into other languages, we'll likely offer the App in those languages also.
Sorry for the confusion.
Andrew Savikas replied on December 29, 2008 17:46 to the problem "iPhone Missing Manual App - no images and links don't work" in O'Reilly Media:
Hi Veejayr,
Sorry you're having trouble with the App. It appears that sometimes there's a problem with the download or installation. The fix is simply to delete the App, and then download it again.
To do that, hold your finger on the App icon until all of the Apps begin jiggling, then press the black "X" in the corner of the App icon to delete it.
Then go to the App Store from your phone, and re-install the App (you won't be charged again to re-download to the application).
Thanks!
Andrew Savikas replied on December 24, 2008 21:22 to the question "Is iPhone the Missing Manual for iPod Touch also?" in O'Reilly Media:
Hi Robin,
While the book (and App) explicitly cover the iPhone, much of it applies to the iPod Touch as well. You can view the book's table of contents here (click each chapter/section title to view a snippet).
We do also have an iPod: The Missing Manual, which isn't (yet) available through the App Store, but if you purchase it from us as an eBook, you can download it to your iPod touch and read it using the popular Stanza reader. There's more info over on our Tools of Change for Publishing blog and on our main Ebooks page.-

Hi Hill,
Here's a bit more detail on the limitation:
"Apple is aware of the desire for [Cut, Copy, Paste on iPhone] and it is working on it in the labs as we speak," Sven Rafferty reports for SvenOnTech.

Hi ecsdomain,
Sorry, I didn't realize we didn't have a table of contents up on that page. I'll make sure that gets addressed, but in the meantime here's the back of the DVD containing more detail.
I should also mention that we do have a 100% satisfaction guarantee on items purchased from oreilly.com.

Hi ecsdomain, can you be more specific? We have a DVD from one of the tutorials from last year's TOC Conference with that title, with a full description here.

Andrew Savikas replied on December 20, 2008 14:25 to the question "Already bought electronic version, is the iPhone version free" in O'Reilly Media:
To view the Stanza version you just need to log in to your account directly from your iPhone or iPod touch. (If you don't yet have the free Stanza App installed, you'll want to get that from the App Store first.) On your iPhone, open Safari and go to oreilly.com/e and log in. When you view the details for one of the books in your account, you'll see a button to download to Stanza. I've attached a screenshot from my own iPhone showing the link. Pressing the "Download to Stanza" button will launch Stanza and download the book to your iPhone.
