Create a custom tweet when posting a new postI sent this to Brett at posterous by email but I thought I'd post it here as well so the community could comment.
I've realized how much more I tweet than post to my blog lately, and I thought I'd try to shift the balance more to blogging since posterous autoposting takes care of sending to twitter anyhow.
Now the problem I'm encountering is that when I create a post either through email or the bookmarklet, the tweet doesn't end up looking how I want it to look -- it's stuck at the default (or the twitter "custom footer" I've set) with the title and a cut-off summary of the article. I could do better if I could write a custom tweet for the post, but that involves posting to posterous as a private post, getting the url for the post, and manually tweeting it ==> many downsides.
But I notice that when I post a *comment*, I can check the twitter checkbox and then type in a custom 140 char message *right there*!
That made me think -- it would be *awesome* if the bookmarklet included the option to type a custom 140 character message for twitter (and other 140char microblogging platforms) -- or maybe a 120 character message, leaving room for the short URL at the end. The field could be below the "Comment" field, or maybe under Advanced Options >> Autopost.
Or to also allow custom tweet text in posts by email, you could adopt the ((tag:)) syntax and add ((tweet:)) or ((message:)) or ((msg:)) in emails as the custom tweet?
A change like that would make it much easier to use Posterous for much more tweeting.

Great stuff, @sucka99! Official Rep @Adam has been following up on a related thread so I've crosslinked over to here.
Thanks!

Actually, it turns out the Dashboard page *does* take url parameters -- it's only the PingOut page that doesn't. Myopiclunacy.com has an updated version of the bookmarklet that feeds the highlighted text to the Dashboard page in a popup window as a workaround to the PingOut problem. See the GetSatisfaction thread here and the Myopiclunacy page here.

Yes, that's right -- I don't like the "url - comment" format of the PingThis page. I prefer the "message" format of the PingOut page (and the Dashboard). [in fact, given that the Dashboard has the Message format, the PingThis page seems odd and mismatched with the rest of Ping.fm. Perhaps that accounts for why custom groups aren't even on that page... it's just out of date with the rest of ping.fm?].
But I can imagine that other people might like the PingThis page -- just not me. That's why I thought it would be nice to have an alternative bookmarklet, to give people more choice.

Thanks for responding. I'll try to explain.
Pingplus gets selected text (yay!) but goes to the "Ping This" page (with the "link" and "title" fields -- odd for twitter-style messaging).
The Mentoliptus pingout bookmarklet (here) goes to the Ping Out page (with a Message field -- yay!) but we can't make it prepopulate that field with selected text until the PingOut page accepts URL parameters. And since the Ping This page accepts URL parameters, the idea was to make the PingOut page accept them too -- and maybe the Dashboard as well -- why not, eh?
Is that more clear?

The Mentoliptus pingout bookmarklet would be perfect if it could prepopulate the message with selected text the way PingPlus does. Unfortunately, the pingout page doesn't accept URL parameters. I've suggested that idea here.
The other big improvement would be displaying the Pingout in a z-layer popup on the page instead of a separate window (like how the TBUZZ bookmarlet pops up. That would be the perfect ping.fm bookmarklet!

Pingout page should accept URL parametersIt would be useful if the Dashboard page and the Pingout page would accept URL parameters to prepopulate at least the Message field (if not the group dropdown as well). This would allow bookmarklets and other links to make much better use of those pages. The page that the PingThis bookmarklet goes to already accepts URL parameters but doesn't provide nearly as nice an interface as Pingout, or even the Dashboard.-

It worked a few days ago but as of the developer update to 4.0.222.12 on Oct 15 the bookmarklet no longer works.
