Have to enter a cost code
I cannot book a car through the online booking system without entering a cost code. But I'm not booking for a company, just myself, an individual -- I always enter garbage text in the box, but I'd prefer not to have to.

I'm pretty sure the behaviour I was seeing wasn't by design(!), although it could well be unrelated to the bug you wanted to test. – ChrisS, on March 11, 2009 15:50

    Hi Sherman,
I'm actually seeing some pretty weird behaviour here: a newsletter email has attached itself to one of my (to-do'd) conversations (completely unrelated). It seems to have merged with the most recent of the conversation's emails. The source of both messages is displaying. The newsletter is also appearing alone (i.e. as a separate email in the normal way) without apparent problems. Checking in gmail via the web displays all emails as normal.

I tried rebuilding the index folder's index, but that didn't solve the problem.

This is a bit difficult to explain - sorry if it isn't making sense!

Thank you for the transparency. I can't imagine how hard it is to be open about a mistake with the magnitude of consequences you're dealing with, but I appreciate knowing what's going on so I can cheer you on in your efforts.

    To recovery and beyond!

Use contacts (address book) data in the From column of the message list.
Lots of my contacts haven't worked out how to set up their email so that their name appears in the From field - it just displays an email address. Others put really unhelpful things there like ALL CAPS, or stupidly long list names.

It'd be great if Postbox could use the data from my address book to display the name I've provided, where it's available, instead of just the email address. It would just make things that little bit nicer/quicker when scanning through mail.

Edit: As it already does in the message view itself...

Thanks, using the View menu worked, although it didn't remember my setting until I'd actually sent a message, rather than just closing the new message window.

The shift-click compose tip is very handy. Unfortunately it's uncovered what I think is another bug: After shift-clicking to send a plain text email where HTML is the default (which works fine), the formatting toolbar is then hidden for all subsequent HTML (non shift-click) compose. The "Formatting Toolbar" item it is ticked in the view menu, although clicking on it the item does bring it back (the tick stays). The setting (i.e. toolbar visible) is then remembered until next time a plain text email is composed.

    - This is also the case if shift-click composing HTML email from a plain-text default: the toolbar is ticked in the view menu, but doesn't appear until toggled.

I tried this out in Thunderbird, and it doesn't seem to be a bug there.

Switching between plain text and HTML as default format seems broken
I switched my account to use plain text composition as the default ("Account Settings > Composition and Addressing > [untick] Compose in HTML format").

This worked as expected - when I went to compose a new email the formatting menu and toolbar were gone. I then realised that there was no way (that I could see) to switch back to HTML format on a per-message basis (this would be a great add, incidentally!), so decided to switch back to HTML as the default.

Now when I compose a new message the format menu is there, but disabled, and the toolbar is still gone. I can't add formatting to the message, and although the font has changed back from a fixed-width one, the test email I sent is still in plain-text format.

Thanks Scott! That does seem to have solved the problem.

In case this helps you or other people - here were the environmental conditions:
    • I was using what I assume was the latest version (downloaded and installed fresh today - version 1.0b4 (2009012318)).

    • I imported settings from Thunderbird (does re-use the TBird mbox file? Might that have been the problem?)

    • The account was a Gmail one, accessed via IMAP

Conversation threading sometimes puts emails in the wrong thread.
The conversation-style threading on the whole works very well. Sometimes, however, Postbox puts conversations in a thread which don't belong there.

As an example, near the top of my inbox I have a thread/conversation called "Website". Within that are a few emails sent recently to me recently from a couple of people in response to an email I sent them. But also attached to that thread is an email sent around 11 months ago, from someone completely unrelated, which just happens to have the same subject.

Perhaps the problem here is that the conversation threading needs to be a bit smarter - e.g. to guess that if an email is more than x months separated from others in a thread, (and perhaps sent by someone who isn't elsewhere in the thread) it isn't really part of that thread.
