While we don't have a way to restart a synth in the middle, there is a way to restart one without having to re-enter all of the metadata and photos as long as the synth dialog is still open. It's currently a bit hidden: Right-click on the proress bar / error text area and you will see two commands: Edit and Promote. Choose Edit and you will get the New Synth dialog for that synth. Click SYNTH and it will start that one over.

If you just (seconds ago) canelled, the synth, you may get an error message. Give it a minute before you try again.
