DrRus, our apologies for the delay, this thread must have gotten lost in the mix. Currently you can check out by sending the "LEAVE" command via SMS or email. Adding a leave button onto the main website and mobile sites is still on our to do list and unfortunately we don't have an ETA at this time. – Lesley, on November 10, 2008 17:17

A reference implementation in C# would be a huge step for cross-platform dissemination, given Microsoft's support for Silverlight in the Macs, and Novell's Moonlight. In fact, I am surprised that Photsynth was not released as a Silverlight app, as it seem to be marketed as an internet app, and that is what Silverlight was designed for. It would finally give a lot of people a very good reason to install Silverlight.

Marie, we pull all of our location data from Google's geocoder. I tested searching the locations you mentioned above in Google Maps and it seemed to have a hard time with them. This would explain why our database is not returning the proper results for you. There's no easy way for us to fix this, but we are doing what we can to make the location searches better. This beta is all about working out the kinks, so please bear with us. :) – Lesley, on August 29, 2008 16:42

Took me maybe 5 minutes trying to work out how to check in to Las Pinas City. I tried the map, but couldn't pinpoint a spot. I tried Philippines, found other cities, but I can't figure out how they got that working, e.g. "Mandaluyong, National Capital Region, Philippines". I finally checked the FAQ and googled for the latitude/longitude but now it says, "Las Pinas, , Philippines"... which looks kinda ugly -- ideally, there should be National Capital Region too in between.-

wizard04 is correct, you would just search for "@starbucks in Denver, CO" or "@starbucks near zipcode/address". You don't have to do 2 separate checkins. :) – Lesley, on August 28, 2008 23:03

Just search for "someplace near somecity", like in google maps. – wizard04, on August 28, 2008 12:15

the most recent changes are not an improvement for those of us who travel a lot. i can understand the value of one search box if all my queries are in the same city, but they're not.
please bring back the optional 2 box search. if i'm in the same city, i can just use the place search; but if not, it's nice to be able to type both the city and the place instead of having to do 2 checkins. i don't want to do 2 checkins -- especially if i'm sending them to twitter or any other service!

shih_wei, it looks like you have a protected Twitter account which is why we cannot connect to import your friends. In the future the "Discover Friends" feature will be much much better and this will include an authentication so that you will be able to import friends from a protected account. Unfortunately we don't have an ETA for these improvements just yet. – Lesley, on August 25, 2008 18:32

Skinkie, how about option C-- what if we were to make a simple reference implementation of the viewer available to the community, so that Linux fans can go and do what they do best, to everyone's benefit? ;)
I imagine the synther is already Wine compatible, btw, but would appreciate if you could verify!
A comment on the question "When will a Mac version of Photosynth be available?" in Microsoft Live Labs:
Now I can look in the future a bit, and I see that two things can happen. Microsoft thinks smart, thinks .NET and makes the binaries work in .NET and .mono. Or some smart lads from Germany already show what is possible on this point: http://user.cs.tu-berlin.de/~nowozin/...
Or the Linux community feels ignored, goes developing their own nifty sift based patent encumbered european based Photosynth-free-clone. People will use the free clone because more people can develop on it and in the end removes the momentum from Photosynth because there is a better toy in town. I see by not going cross platform or not making the tool 'Wine' compatible only problems. Think of the result if the tool does run under Wine, you can serve mac and linux people. – Skinkie, on August 25, 2008 04:22

Shinzann, I won't rule it out, but to be brutally frank, I think the chances aren't good. This has nothing to do with operating system partisanship-- we're very keen to do the Mac version simply because lots of people with Macs are passionate photographers and early adopters of visual technology. We know that it hurts the community as a whole for there not to be a Mac implementation. But the cost to us of supporting additional platforms in binary code is substantial-- we have a small team, and such support must be balanced against lots of great features (for the rest of us) we could build with comparable resources. In other words, it's all about a kind of integrated value over the community. It's a tradeoff-- wider, or deeper? We don't imagine that a huge segment of our potential community works exclusively on Linux boxes. But if you have data that might cast doubt on this intuition, do please share.
I'm more optimistic about PowerPC, because as far as I understand the APIs and compilation tools are identical to the new Mac, so the cost may not be very high. But I'm not sure.
