You probably have an extension/addon that is causing this. My brother had the same problem and it turned out to be the Skype extension (for him at least). See https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug... which is about writing a Knowledge Base article about this problem. Also try Thomas' suggestion to start Firefox in Safe Mode, which will allow you to verify that this problem doesn't happen if you're not running extensions.

I'm concerned with your motivation because I'd like to figure out what in the new behavior (that by most people is considered an improvement, since it adapts to your usage) that you don't like. This feedback is valuable for the Firefox development team so they can improve the experience.

See Thomas' response above for the quick solution if you just want to get the old behavior back.

I don't understand. If I type 'g' in my location bar, Google appears as the top result. If it's not at the top for you, click on the result you want and Firefox 3 will learn that and place it higher and higher up, eventually at the top. It learns as you go.

The new Smart Location Bar adapts to your behavior. If you use it to type URLs, it will pick that up and very quickly display the most relevant results at the top of the list. Try it for a few days and soon enough you will just have to type one or two letters in the location bar to get where you want. Read more about it here: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/S...

While it might not be exactly what you're asking for, you can press Ctrl+L to quickly jump to a line number. Usually that's what you want to do when getting an error message.

You can also see where you are currently in the statusbar.
