I'm very interested in knowing how such a feature is working. How did those spots get the "custom" stamp and why isn't it available in the category lists?

So, it looks like this may have been implemented in a way. There is now a "Bookmark" tab on spots.



Interested how this interacts with the iPhone app.

Unique Visitors Pin

This is a fun little achievement for those lofty creators out there: A pin akin to the Created/Founded Spots Pin which is awarded when a spot reaches a certain number of unique visitors.

Example: Mr. Ginsberg created the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (Spot #9410) and since its addition to the Gowalla catalogue, there have been 158 Unique Visitors.

Upon that spot's 50 unique visitors, Mr. Ginsberg would get a pin signifying that he created at least one spot that received that many individuals checking in. The intent is that these wouldn't be awarded for every spot with that many visitors, just for the first instance of a spot seeing 50 unique people. And it could go up incrementally just as the Created/Founded pins.

As it isn't for number of check-ins, rather for actual unique visitors, there is very little motivation (or ability) for abuse.

Generally, I do the same thing, selecting the Merge button on the spot to keep (as was the case with the first merge). This was purely my error and not some fault in the UI design of the function.

Kept Wrong Spot

Well, it was bound to happen sooner or later... all the worse as it was my fault.

With so many duplicates, merging is starting to become a task in itself and I beseech my fellow STEs to be ever vigilant when doing so, especially when there are several spots to be merged.

So, here's what I did:

Hogg Memorial Auditorium was created by Susan Herself on November 3, 2009. On the 20th and 23rd of November, duplicates of the spot were created. I successfully merged the duplicate that was created on the 23rd INTO Susan's original spot. However, when selecting the duplicate created on the 20th, I forgot to ensure which spot was to be kept upon the merge and the default selection was that of the 23rd's.

The original spot: #77187


The Duplicate Hogg which was kept: #115891


Oh, my kingdom for an Undo button. I am terribly sorry, Susan and I dearly hope that this will get resolved to return your claim to creating this spot and its original date. I have faith in the wonder and magic that is Gowalla and will surely spend my days with a heavy heart until all is right in Gowalladom.

It's not an advantage so much as a deterrent to spamming Check-Ins at the same spot (in the event of a player trying to grab an icon/item that would drop from that spot).
