I agree - AT&T SUCKS! Dropped calls, no service, dropped calls, can't hear the other person, they can't hear you, dropped calls, text, picture, and voice messages delayed for days, or not delivered at all, Dropped calls, billing issues, charges for calls you didn't make or services you didn't ask for, dropped calls, VERY rude customer service, and dropped calls. I've had it all. AT&T - YOUR WORLD, UNDELIVERED!

Yes, I have a data-only Treo. The data plan costs a little more (like ~$5) than it would if I also had a voice plan on it (but it's still way cheaper than actually putting a voice plan on it).
I think there are also special plans available for deaf or hard of hearing users, but I don't have any experience with this.

The "trick" or the caveat to the 1st generation iPhone is that technically all 1st gen iPhones are customer owned equipment and needed to be activated through iTunes. All of these phones required a two year contract as do the new iPhone 3G's however the activation must be done in a store. So I guess in short iPhone = 2 yr contract. Once again, I would like to apologize for any poor experience that you've had with AT&T. Sometimes these things get confusing even for us. I'm just sorry that it manifested itself in a poor experience for you and your partner.

I believe as with any company with so many employees, a customers experience can be influenced by the representative they get for better or for worse. I would like to apologize for any poor service rendered by an AT&T representative and I assure you we try our best to make sure this does not happen. The customer in my opinion is the ONLY reason AT&T is still in business for without customers, and I will say HAPPY customers, no business can survive. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help with your situation.

Thanks for looking into this. I'm very disappointed as up until now I had nothing but positive experiences with AT&T. If I had known they were going to make my partner sign up for a 2 year contract, I would have told him to get a new iPhone!
Just to clarify, they made him sign a 2 year contract simply to add my old iPhone to my account and setup a family share plan.
It doesn't seem reasonable...He is switching from Verizon and using an old phone!
Thanks for your help!
Jared replied on August 19, 2008 20:55 to the question "Already being an at&t wireless customer, do I have to sign a 2 year contract if I get the iPhone?" in AT&T:
Because of the large subsidy that AT&T is providing for the iPhone 3G a contract extension is required in order to recoup some of that cost. AT&T has stated that because of the deep discount the earnings per share will take a hit of 10 - 12 cents per share for the next two years, but at the same time felt it was important to offer such a great phone at a great price to the customer.

Sean, I am sorry for the experience, I know its tough when you are told one thing and when you try to make it happen it doesnt seem to work out. I am still researching this issue for you but at first glance I believe the issue is due to it being an iPhone. Due to the patnership nature of AT&T and Apple I do not believe we offer the iPhone without a two year contract..(yet).

my partner was a verizon customer that moved to at*t to take my old iphone. as I mentioned I called at&t beforehand and was told no contract necessary for this but when he got to the at&t store they put a 2 year contract in front of him....and he signed. not happy at all. a 2 year contract and no new phone to show for it.
