Mapping the items' travels is a great idea. It would make both the "story" and "network" parts of the game more real. Also lends a sense of accomplishment that an item I "created" has gone off to be part of other people and places. How cool would it be to get an e-mail in the middle of the day that one of "my" items was just picked up halfway around the world?

Good discussion. I LOVE finding a great new store, coffee shop or museum because it's a Gowalla spot. I don't like scrolling past Costcos and Arbys to get to a truly special spot. When I visit a new city and look at the spot list, I want it to be full of special spots, not chains I can find at home or anywhere.
I think Gowalla should be about discovering more than cataloging. Banning certain spots probably is too harsh, but some guidelines about what makes spots special will help. Of course, it all depends on the rules of the game and they're still being written...partly by us. So here's one Gowallaby's vote to discourage the generic in favor of the special.
A comment on the problem "App crashes intermittently" in Gowalla:
Well-described, Ben. I've had the very same experience with the same phone and OS. I also wonder if this little hang-up around the items screen is part of the reason I haven't found any new items despite creating and checking-in at many new spots. I'm now out of items completely and I wonder if there's something wrong with the way they should be awarded on check-in to a newly-created place. – Jeff, on November 03, 2009 06:41

Now we have bowlingThanks for adding a bowling alley category in entertainment! Now work your magic on the icon.
A comment on the question "Where are the instructions?" in Gowalla:
I agree! It's fun to be in discovery mode rather than competition mode. I'm excited for new features to come, but for the moment this app is so well-designed that I can just sort of figure it out on my own without reading a long list of rules and regs. – Jeff, on October 26, 2009 02:32

Dedicated icon for state capitolsI think there should be an icon for state capitols. There are icons for city halls, courthouses and some other government buildings, but capitols shouldn't just be stuck in "historic sites".

Nice job on the redesign. I'm glad the classic ChiTrib font is back...it reminds us of the history of the institution. Thanks for getting rid of the rotating photo slot and putting more headlines back on the main page. I'll come back more often now to scan the headlines. Only design complaint is the long "breaking news" bar just below the "fold", which breaks up the page in a weird way. I didn't expect to see more news below it, but then there was.
