Thanks for the quick response. It's definitely a tough call. Maybe it's also more of a reporting issue. That is to say, maybe the pie chart of activities isn't the right way to represent what's going on, because since things can be represented in multiple categories, it's not a case where things add up to 100%. Maybe a different view of this data could let me see what I want to see (how much of the big chunk of web browsing time is testing work websites and how much isn't) without dramatically changing the underlying data. (Or maybe not - maybe a catch-all on a per-app basis is easier).

A pie chart with overlapping data does feel misleading to me though unless it expresses the overlap. Making a pie chart that does that for my specific case seems pretty easy (just throw the sections next to each other and find a good way to visually represent the overlap). Solving that for the general case where a lot of different things can overlap by different amounts is more complex and probably requires throwing out the "pie" paradigm altogether. Sounds like a pretty great data vis exercise, which is the kind of thing I do, but I'm pretty booked at the moment. Maybe someday though I'll grab the data and play around with it.
