Because you lack administrative privileges, perhaps? ;-)

Try 'gksu synaptic' (and then provide your admin password when prompted)

Karmic == "unsupported" or "bad idea"?
Is switching from Jaunty to Karmic merely "unsupported" or is it a bad idea? In other words, what are the odds that I'll find dependency/compatibility issues were I to switch repos?

I did set up my netbook to be dual-boot (both Jolicloud) so that I can have one install I use and one install I can tinker with. But I'm curious as to what the official word is on this subject.

    Thanks in advance!

Heh. I was having a similar reaction initially. Found gnome-terminal though, so I'm all good. :-)

Pidgin thinks all words are misspelled initially due to missing language tools
When I first set up an account within Pidgin and began typing, I noticed that every single word I typed was flagged as misspelled. (My locale is en_US.UTF-8)

Solution: Launch gnome-language-selector (or choose Language Support from Administration). You'll be informed that not all tools had been installed and given the opportunity to install them. Install them. Then log out. When you log back in, things work as expected.

Suggestion: I don't know if there's any way you can cause the missing tools to be automatically installed via some post-install script, but it would be nifty if you could.

    Thanks!

Aha! No I had not. Having just done so, I see the same problem in Google Reader. My apologies.

Do you have a URL for their issue tracker?

Text missing from some content when viewed in Feedly
Normally when I view an article within Feedly the entire text is displayed. This does not seem to be the case for at least items from Google groups. In this screenshot:

Screenshot illustrating the problem., compare the text on the left (Feedly) with the text on the right (Google groups).

    Missing:

    1. The quoted text (prepended with '>')
    2. The full text (it's cut off mid-way)

The article in question can be found here.

    Thanks!

Google Search Overlay should not apply to local searches
A number of sites use Google to enable users to perform a local/site search. See, for instance:

    http://www.google.com/search?sitesear...

When a local/site search is being performed, the Google Search Overlay should not (IMHO) kick in because the desired results would not include content outside of the site being searched.

I appreciate your presence on Twitter
Hi! I'm a brand-new Feedly user. Feedly so far has been awesome, and as I "just use it," I keep finding cool features which make me like it that much more. That said, *this* "praise" is about a human/customer support experience I had.

I am, admittedly, one of those Twitter users who tweets what she is doing pretty much constantly. :-) As a result, as I was first checking out Feedly, I commented: http://twitter.com/Joanmarie/status/1.... It wasn't a complaint; it was merely "what I was doing" at the moment. Nonetheless, @feedly replied. From her response, I realized that I needed to dig deeper and pay attention more, and found that there was indeed NetVibes support built in already. When it turned out that what should JustWork(tm) didn't quite work as expected, I'd tweeted to @feedly with that information, and she responded quite quickly with the fact that I'd potentially have stumbled across a bug.

THE POINT (tm): As someone who subscribes fully to the notion that one should RTFM and use a product's bugzilla/issue tracker, I was never expecting customer support. The fact that I got support -- without asking for it, without paying for it -- was an unexpected, INCREDIBLY APPRECIATED bonus. The fact that I'd received this unsolicited support in a timely fashion *and* on a Sunday makes it that much more stunning.

Elisa: I really, really, really appreciate your help!!!! I feel like a customer. I feel valued. I feel supported. I feel like I should've paid for the support I've received. :-)

And: I feel like Elisa deserves props for all of the above.

    RFE: Personalized Amazon Recommendations
There is a Kelly Clarkson ad on my feedly page. The temptation to call this a bug -- and a 'show stopper' one at that -- is practically overwhelming. ;-) ;-) On the flip side, U2's "No Line on the Horizon" is periodically showing up. What are the odds that I'll click on that link and buy that album? Hint 1: I already own that album. Hint 2: I purchased it from Amazon. :-)

In all seriousness, is there some way for me to sign in to my amazon.com account via feedly so that I can see personalized recommendations? I tried changing 'mystore' to the email address I have associated with my Amazon account (it was worth a try!). Doing so resulted in Kelly being gone, but ultimately the box pointed out that I could enable Amazon recommendations. When I agreed, the value was restored to 'mystore'. From this I'm concluding that the answer to my question is 'no', hence the RFE.

    Other thoughts:

    1. The fact that you can change the value from 'mystore' to something else via the preferences implies that a certain amount of customization is possible. If this is the case, at least minimal documentation should appear in that area suggesting what valid values are. Alternatively, validation of the entry (and hints when validation fails) might be helpful. If it's not customizable, but rather just off/on, it should be a checkbox or two radio buttons rather than an entry.

    2. While I hate sponsored ads as a general rule, if the ad is for something that Amazon thinks I'd like based on my purchasing history, feedback, ratings & reviews, wishlist, etc. I can probably get over my hatred because at least the ad bares some resemblance to personal relevance. :-)

    3. If you're clever about it, and partner with Amazon, I would think this can turn into an widget (rather than an ad, but you'd presumably still get revenue from it). Think about it: Between you and Amazon you have access to the following information about me:

      1. Things I talk about/share on social networks

      2. Who my friends (or at least "friends") are

      3. Things I read about (feeds in Feedly + books bought/rated/wishlisted on Amazon

      4. Things I own already

      5. Things (i.e. products) I'm already aware of, and (admittedly to a lesser extent) things I might not be aware of

      6. Things I'm likely to buy

With this in mind, consider the following: I'm reading about one of my favorite topics via Feedly, the story I'm reading happens to be about or by John Doe, John Doe's latest book came out, I don't own this book -- didn't know it existed -- but 3 of my friends (or "friends") with whom I regularly interact have purchased it and given it high ratings. What is the likelihood that I at least want to know about this book? (answer: Very, very likely!) What is the likelihood that I'll click on an "ad" for this book and purchase it? (answer: Pretty darned likely, and if I don't buy it right then I'd definitely add it to my wishlist for purchase later.) What is the likelihood that I'd view this information as intrusive? (answer: Next to nil. Make it an option in preferences and call it a "widget," and I'd see it not as an ad, but as a feature.)

Sorry to be so long-winded, but the more I think about this the more I see it as something good for all: I get desired information and shopping help, Feedly gets revenue, Amazon sells more stuff, and Kelly Clarkson is never seen on my page again. :-)

    Thanks for "hearing me out."

    Logging in to NetVibes?
Hi. I was unable to import my feeds from NetVibes. Initially I didn't realize that I needed to click on "Not an active Google Reader user?" Once I worked that out, and pressed the Apply button, I was informed that I needed to log in to NetVibes first. I was already logged in to NetVibes in another tab in the same window of my browser (FF 3.1 Beta 2).

For good measure, I logged out and back in several times -- both for Feedly and for NetVibes. No luck. I didn't see any place in Feedly to log into NetVibes either.

@feedly on Twitter suggested that all I should've needed to do was log in to NetVibes (as I had). Therefore, this sounds like a bug.

    Thanks for your help!

BTW, the work-around is easy enough (export the NetVibes feeds to OPML; import the resulting OPML into Google Reader).

RFE: The IM bot should recognize 'help' all by itself as a command
The IM bot should recognize 'help' all by itself as a command rather than a single word update to all of the default services. :-) The reason I tried 'help' was because I was on my sidekick and couldn't remember the name of one of my custom triggers. Rather than go to the web (slow on the sidekick), I figured an im bot would surely recognize 'help' as a command and respond with some other keywords I could use. Oops. On the bright side, I'm now getting replies with Beatles' lyrics. ;-)

Thanks in advance for your consideration!
