The bug I filed turned out to be a duplicate of Bug 8551. There is also an older thread here titled Make Songbird Default Player Button with 38 people following it. Go add your vote and hopefully developers will get onto it soon.-

You may file a bug report at Bugzilla by clicking on the link titled "Enter a new bug report" just below the search field on the left. You may also wish to read THIS article on how to write a good bug report. Please note you need an account to file a bug report. – kazemizuhi, on May 10, 2009 14:18

I agree that there should be a simple solution. Hopefully this feature is added into a later release of Songbird or an extension developer makes an add-on with this functionality.
In the mean time I recommend scanning all the music you wish to listen to into Songbird's library and just loading Songbird to listen to music.
P.S. You could also file a bug report. While it is not a broken feature of the application, it is a core feature of many programs and the developers may see it as wise to include it in future. – kazemizuhi, on May 10, 2009 13:59

kazemizuhi replied on May 09, 2009 13:23 to the problem "XPI file extension" in Songbird:
Wow, talk about going way off-topic.
If the add-on you wish to install is for Firefox, drag and drop the *.xpi file into an open window of Firefox. If it is for Songbird, drag and drop the file into an open window of Songbird.
I am not sure if this works with Linux distributions, but it does under a Windows environment. Just give it a try.

If the dev's are to implement something, I believe we should all come to a consensus on what it is we want. I believekillersquirrel's post above, summarises the best ideas put forth here. Yes? – kazemizuhi, on April 27, 2009 23:12
killersquirrel's reply to "Suggestions for improving the Now Playing List" was just promoted to the most useful! kazemizuhi and 4 other people think it's one of the best replies.
Why not let the user decide what happens on double click?
- Songbird should incorporate several playlist options (such as "play", "enqueue next", "enqueue last" etc) in a "mouse control" menu and give the user the possibility to choose from several actions (such as click on a song/album/link, double click, click+key combination) and thus make the controls completely customizable.
Concerning the problem of losing your current playlist by accidentally double-clicking etc:
- Songbird should provide an option to undo changes to your playlist, e.g. in the playlist's context menu (MediaMonkey has this) or as playlist control buttons.
- Furthermore, drag+drop for as many parts of the application as possible should be available, as it's the most intuitive way of using a program.

1.Open Firefox and download the extension.
2.Open Songbird and in a new tab type
about:config
click the button
3.Right-click >> New >> Boolean and name it
extensions.checkCompatibility
4.Double click to set it to "false" if it's not already so.
5.Drag the downloaded extension into Songbird's window to install.
6.Cure cancer.
kazemizuhi replied on April 27, 2009 02:29 to the question "How do I set songbird as a standard program (player) in vista?" in Songbird:
I am not entirely sure but I believe this may be a Vista issue (Windows Media Player still hijacks audio files if I select more than 15 in explorer and hit enter).
While it may seem like a chore to manually change each one, most people generally only use a few different file types for audio (*.mp3 *.mp4 *.flac *.wav *.ogg) and video (*.avi *.mpg *.mp4 *.mkv *.rmvb). Ninety percent of your media library (audio/video) is probably comprised of no more than 3-4 file types.
However I do agree that since Vista does not want to play nice, Songbird should have an option to hijack file types as the default application.
P.S. I thought I might also ask why you needed Songbird as the default player? Which files types do you need to set as default? Personally I have scanned my library into Songbird and select and play tracks from within the application. Would you care to elaborate on as to what circumstances not having Songbird as the default player causes issues for you?-

This would be an interesting feature to have. I think the easiest way would be to petition this request to the extension's developer directly.
No wait! It's already been done:

A comment on the idea "Suggestions for improving the Now Playing List" in Songbird:
I understand that such a method may not work for all smart playlists, but for small (50 tracks) lists where the criterion is primarily rating and/or playcount (which I use myself) I can see this working well. The only way to accomplish what is detailed above right now, would be to copy all the tracks from a smart playlist into a standard playlist every time the smart playlist changed it's selection of tracks. – kazemizuhi, on April 25, 2009 14:24
A comment on the idea "Suggestions for improving the Now Playing List" in Songbird:
@JeCh. I understand a dynamic playlist cannot hold my prefered order forever as it is constantly changing. That said, there should be no technical reason why the user may not re-arrange their lists. Let us assume I have a list consisting of 4(max) tracks:
1.A .... 2.B .... 3.C .... 4.D
I then re-arrange them to my preferance:
1.C .... 2.D .... 3.B .... 4.A
According to the rules set for this smart playlist, the track titled 'B' is now superceded by a track titled 'X' from my library. Track 'B' is thus removed and track 'X' is added to the end of my list thereby maintaining my order (sans 'B'):
1.C .... 2.D .... 3.A .... 4.X
I therefore only need to periodically alter the order. – kazemizuhi, on April 25, 2009 14:20
