Once you step on to the dance floor you are part of the chat. The reason that all of these people might not be showing up in the player select panel is because they are still on the scoreboard or loot screen from the previous song. After they proceed past both screens you will be able to see them on the player select panel.-

The square gem represents the last gem of each song. Hitting the gem doesn't cause you to fail. You receive points as if it were any other gem. If it happens to fill up your meter on the bottom, then you succeed. If it doesn't fill up the meter, you fail that particular dance.
