I think you'll be better off filing this as an API issue so it gets the attention it deserves. API Issue log is here: http://code.google.com/p/twitter-api/...
This forum (GetSatisfaction) is more suited to end-user concerns, so IMHO logging a new API issue then posting a note on the Developer Google group is the way to go. – mdy, on November 19, 2008 01:41

Thanks for pointing that out.
The information still appears in a “Troubleshooting” document, which tells me Twitter is content to let developers stumble blindly into these limits, rather than putting them in the API docs, where they need to be. – Kevin Yank, on November 19, 2008 01:29

Oh, and chances are you know this already, but figured I'd mention that there's a Google Group for developers who work with the Twitter API, and Twitter's API lead actively participates there.

Hello. Fwiw, the DM limit is documented in Twitter's FAQ, which can be found at https://help.twitter.com/index.php?pg...
The specific page that talks about limits in general and the DM limit in particular is here: https://help.twitter.com/index.php?pg...
Kevin Yank reported a problem in Twitter on November 18, 2008 23:40:
Direct Message daily sending limit is undocumentedTwitter enforces a limit on the number of direct messages (DMs) that an account can send in a day. As of this writing, our experience shows this limit to be 250 DMs per day. This limit is completely undocumeted, although there are several obscure mentions in Get Satisfaction topics (e.g. What happens if I hit a Twitter limit?).
By the nature of this limit, developers are most likely to encounter it for the first time at the worst possible moment: in the middle of a successful launch of a Twitter-based service. The only way to save developers from this type of disaster is through helpful developer documentation, but Twitter has instead chosen to be secretive about the very existence of this limit.
Developers may apply for whitelisting, which circumvents this limit. This is a perfectly sensible spam prevention measure. The problem is that, due to the absence of documentation, developers don’t know they need to submit a whitelist request until they have run afoul of the limit, and their customers are in an uproar.
To make matters worse, the Twitter API reports successful sending of DMs even after the daily DM sending limit has been reached. So not only are developers hobbled by insufficient information before they run into trouble, but Twitter falsifies the diagnostic information that is provided to them after the fact.
Just think of the number of developer man-hours and customers lost because of this ridiculous lack of documentation. Then think of how long it would take to update the Twitter API documentation with the necessary information.
Please, Twitter. Treat developers as the allies they are. Give them the documentation they need.
Alicia replied on November 18, 2008 23:27 to the problem "No SMS updates with VerizonWirelsss for a week!" in Twitter:
* your Twitter username:Alicia_Jenkins
* Carrier: VERIZON
* SMS previously working? YES
* Phone successfully verified right now? I can send...
* Any response to ON? NO
* Last tweet successfully posted via sms: 11/18/08
* Do tweets sent by sms show up late on the website? Yes
* Still receiving tweets via sms now? NO
* Support ticket number
* Any comments or observations: Changeing to an AT&T phone works flawlessly via SMS. Changed back to Verizon and not even a phone confirmation SMS. If this is a Verizon block I have no issue changeing providers, they cripple enough other stuff this would be too much.

pragmatica:
That can sometimes happen for several (many) seconds if Twitter (or your online connection) is a bit slow.
Also, Twitter prevents you sending any tweet that is longer than 140 characters. – Eridanus, on November 18, 2008 22:51

Mykl.biz replied on November 18, 2008 21:39 to the problem "Twitter shows me following about 700 new people, though I haven't followed anyone new." in Twitter:
short answer: I believe a third-party auto-follow web service at least partially explains the sudden jump in my new "friends".
details: long ago i signed up at SocialToo and activated their auto-follow service. later (when Twitter stopped me from following new friends, because i had "too many") i effectively disabled auto-following by changing my Twitter password. eventually, when time and Twitter's API limits permitted, i used Twitter Karma to trim my "friends" by bulk unfollowing anyone who wasn't following me. much later, i happened to change my password back to the old one. i'm guessing SocialToo still had my login info in their database and periodically tried to auto-follow on my behalf. given the sudden jump with 700 additional friends, i'd guess they must have auto-followed my entire months old backlog of unrequited followers.
solution: i changed my Twitter password to something new, then once again used Twitter Karma to unfollow anyone who wasn't following me. unfortunately, this bulk unfollowing did mean i stopped following some people i want to follow.
question: one thing i don't quite understand: if SocialToo was just following everyone who follows me, why did auto-following result in my following count being about 700 more than my followers? perhaps SocialToo was auto-following based on outdated information in Twitter's database?
this experience has left me reluctant to automatically follow those who follow me. if you'd like me to follow you on Twitter, or just to chat, please reply to @MYKLbiz.
thanks to everyone here who replied to my problem.

Thanks for your answer. I did exactly as you said: manually typed the name, and the Update button changed to Reply, but as soon as I began to type the message, the button grayed out and I was unable to send the message. Any ideas? – pragmatica, on November 18, 2008 20:48

Would you rather he answered the MILLIONS(+) of email he and his campaign get, or that he actually got to work and made things happen?
Seriously, don't sweat the small stuff. You've got a lot of good things to look forward to thanks to the results recent election, and this kind of negative outlook doesn't do anybody any good. There's absolutely nothing wrong with having a decent, optimistic, clear outlook.
Please excuse me for being brash, but I hope you get my point.
