A comment on the problem "Very long comment threads don't display right now (can only view about half the thread)" in Gawker Media Tech:

The "Older threads" link -- which disappeared over the weekend -- is now back. Also, I noticed that the "Oldest first" option works again.
BUT the problem reported above is still a problem. I can only load half the comments on very long threads, like this "Top Chef Live blog" one: http://gawker.com/5392096/live-bloggi...
In the post above, there are actually over 900 comments, but you can only view about 500. Also, the counter at the top of the post is incorrect - it shows "500" instead of "900."
So changes are happening, which is encouraging ... :-) But still no solution to this particular problem.

Ok this latest problem is now fixed, but the EARLIER problem I reported is NOT FIXED.
Now the "Earlier threads" link is back now -- but in very long threads, you still can't load/view all the comments. for example:
- You can only view half the 900 comments in last week's Top Chef Live Blog thread (about 450 out of 900). see http://gawker.com/5392096/live-bloggi...
- And you can only view about half the comments in the Project Runway thread (250 out of 500). see http://gawker.com/5393024/live-bloggi...
MisterHippity replied on November 02, 2009 15:37 to the problem "Only first page of comments load in posts + Comments inaccessible thru profile page" in Gawker Media Tech:
Now you can load more posts again, but very LONG threads are still screwed up - you can't load all the comments in threads with seaveral hundred comments in them.
I just tried the Gawker live blog threads from last week - for the Top Chef one, you can lonly load about 450 our of the 900 comments in the thread. Also, the comment counter inside the post is wrong - it shows fewer comments than there really are (The counter on the outside of the post is correct - the one you see when you pull up the post thru search -- headline + opening blurb).
Also, strangely, the comment counter inside the post goes down every time you load more comments.
Project Runway thread - can only load about 250 out of 500 comments. Same problem with the counter.-

MisterHippity replied on November 02, 2009 04:09 to the question "What happened to the show hidden threads option?" in Gawker Media Tech:
Not only has the "Show hidden comments" link disappeared, but so has the "More threads" link on long threads (ones with more than 50 or so comments). So you can't view past the firrst page of comments in long threads (see my separate post about that problem).
The "More threads" link seems to have disappeared at the same time as the "Show hidden threads" one did.-

Can't view older comments in long threads - the "More threads" link has disappearedStarting today, I noticed that the "More threads" link has disappeared from comment threads that are so long they extend beyond a single page. So now you can only view the first page of (i.e., first 50 or so) comments in long threads. The rest of the comments are impossible to view.
In a previous post I made two weeks ago (here: http://www.getsatisfaction.com/gawker...), I reported that you couldn't view older comments in very long threads any more, because you could only see the first couple hundred comments in those threads - that is you could click the "more threads" link a couple of times and download about half the comments in a very long thread (say, 200 comments in a 400-comment thread) - but the rest of the comments were impossible to see.
Now, today, the problem just got WORSE - the "more threads" links have disappeared altogether. So now you can view even FEWER comments in long threads. You can only see the first 50 comments that usually appear before the first "More threads" link.
You can't view a comment that fell beyond the first "page" worth of comment in a long thread even by clicking on the comment link from your own commenter "Profile" page. The older comments just won't load through either method.
Also, as another poster pointed out, the "View hidden comments" link disappeared from the bottom of comment threads today as well.
Will we ever be able to view older comments in Long threads again? The Project Runway and Top Chef "Live blog" threads are impossible to read now, for one thing ...

Not to be a jerk or anything, but I'm starting to wonder the same thing.
I reported the following problem TWO WEEKS ago: http://www.getsatisfaction.com/gawker...
...but nobody from Gawker tech has even acknowledged the problem here or said they're working on it (let alone solved it).
I also e-mailed the managing editor of Gawker about this two weeks ago, and he said he passed the word along the the Gawker Media tech folks. But still no response has come on that front either.
The problem I reported in that link is a very major one, because it means that hundreds upon hundreds of comments cannot be viewed -- not just in Gawker "live blog" threads, but in any long-ish comment threads across all Gawker Media sites. People post these hundreds of comments, and they disappear for all time, never to be seen again.
I would think there would be some sense of urgency around fixing that, no? What am I missing here?
Again, Gawker Media, sorry to sound like a jerk. But I mean ... Christ! Respond already!

This problem has now gotten WORSE. All "More threads" links have disappeared altogether.
So now you can't read past the first page of ANY comment thread long enough to extend beyond a single page. The older comments in the thread are just gone for all time.
GAWKER PLEASE ACKNOWLEDGE THIS PROBLEM AND TELL US WHAT'S GOING ON -- THANK YOU!!! It's been TWO WEEKS now!!!
Sorry to shout, but my frustration here is bringing out the all-cap demons in me. :-)-

THIS IS THE SAME PROBLEM I REPORTED here in a separate post. See the post titled: "Very long comment threads don't display right now (can only view about half the thread)"
Anyone out there - if you are experiencing this problem, please got to my separate post and click the "I have this Problem too!" button in that post as well (in addition to here). Here's the URL: http://getsatisfaction.com/gawker/top...
This problem happens with any long comment threads (150+ or thereabouts) on any Gawker Media blog. The problem is you can view about half the comments in the thread before the "more" link disappears, and then you cant download the rest. So about half the comments in long threads are impossible to load or view. Also, for those older comments, you cant even view them through a "profile link" as noted above.
I'm having this problem for the "live blog" comment threads on Gawker. You can only view less than half of them - the rest of the commenter live blogs are impossible to see.
This problem started last week when they made the system changes.-

MisterHippity replied on October 22, 2009 16:22 to the problem "Very long comment threads don't display right now (can only view about half the thread)" in Gawker Media Tech:
This is STILL A PROBLEM. It is impossible to view over half the comments in last night's Top Chef Live Blog thread: http://gawker.com/5387011/live-bloggi...
This is apparenlty a problem affecting ALL GAWKER MEDIA sites. For any post that has more than 300 comments or so, it is impossible to view a huge chunk of the comments. Half the threads are un-downloadable.
Could somebody at Gawker please acknowledge this problem, and let us know if you can fix it?? THANK YOU!!!

Very long comment threads don't display right now (can only view about half the thread)Why is is that I can't view all the comments in very long threads any more - only about half of them?
I write the Project Runway and Top Chef live blog posts for Gawker. This week, I discovered that I can't view all of the the live-blog comment threads any more. Last week's Top Chef live blog comment thread has 915 comments in it, but I can download only 329 of them before the "more threads" link disappears. There's no way to get at the remaining 600 comments or so. (See: http://gawker.com/5381747/live-bloggi...)
If I change my setting to "oldest first," I can see even less of the comments - only about 160 or so. And bizarrely, in that view, you don't see any responses to any comments!
I tried to download the Project Runway thread and got the same problem - I can only view about 250 of the 600 or so comments. (See: http://gawker.com/5382741/live-bloggi...)
Looks like the recent site changes crewed up unusually long comment threads. Any thread over a few hundred comments, apparently, can no longer be read in it's entirety.
(I'm using Firefox on WIndows. But also tried using Safari on a Mac and got the same problem.)
