I know what you are saying. Currently, Transmission is the only torrent program I use. However, Firefox was the only browser I used before I got Songbird. I still primarily use Firefox, but Songbird is great for some music websites because it can deal with them better. For example, I instinctually go to the Songbird browser when I want to go to hypemachine, or when I download addons for Songbird because they install straight to the program. Similarly, I think I would get in the habit of going to a site like what.cd in Songbird rather than Firefox if Songbird could open the torrent, download it, and add it to my library properly. It makes more sense than having a picture editor in the program because torrents often involve music, and Songbird deals with music. – Murphy, on March 02, 2009 18:44

I can understand why some people might not want to use this, but I think it should still be in the core program. First, since the feature would never be noticeable unless the user actually tried to open a .torrent file in Songbird, it wouldn't "bloat" the player by adding any visual clutter or slow down the program at all(hopefully). At most, it would make the install file a little bigger. What is important about it, even though not everyone would use it, is it would improve Songbird's intractability with the web, which is what Songbird is striving to do. I don't use any estores, the browser, or mashtape in songbird much, but I think it is important to incorporate features like that into the actual program, since they are unobtrusive, but make the program flexible and useful to people who want to have more interaction with the web inside of the program.

Maybe it would be even better if the icons of playlists were replaced with small play buttons, so you could start playing the list with just one click. It would be a small change, but I think it would make the process feel much more effortless.

So it has. This can already do some of the things you asked for Wayne, and maybe they will add these other search ideas into future versions.

I didn't know this is been suggested before. I posted a comment in the playist sidebar thread that if the now playing list gets implemented on the right side, the album art should be in that bar as well because it would make more sense there.

I like how last.fm does playcounts- it waits until you've played half of the total length of the song. It seems to work perfectly for counting plays. And I agree that there should be a way to reset play counts.

I think this is a really interesting idea. I've never noticed it before, but making a smart playlist can be a long process when you just want to check something out quick. Ubiquity is an addon being developed for firefox that tries to let people use bits of language to perform tasks, and I think this could be something similar. Whenever you type a smart playlist restriction followed by an =, <, or > sign in the search bar it could perform that restriction. For example, if you search something like "playcount = 0", it would show you all of the songs with 0 playcounts.

The biggest problem with iTunes is the lack of a playlist pane. The program buries your currently playing list into the library itself, and it makes it feel difficult to make a playlist or know what one iTunes is playing through. I just wanted to say that I agree with people who are saying that this is something core to the program and not just fit for an addon. As Chrome was the first browser in some time to change some of the standards of browsers, I think Songbird should be willing to break away from the format of iTunes in some regards to fix its mistakes. For example, if the playlist pane is built into the program and if it displays your now playing list, the now playing album's artwork could be placed more fittingly in that pane rather than the main navigation pane, where it doesn't seem to belong. In any case though, a good start would be to have the playlist pane integrated into the program and see how it affects the program's interface from there.

A comment on the question "Global Hotkeys & Minimize to Tray for Linux?" in Songbird:

It is early in the life of songbird, and the developers are working on it every day, which means that features are being implemented. They are surely focusing on the ones that they think people need most right now. I don't use Songbird yet as my primary music player because it is missing some features, but I keep following it knowing that one day they will have more time to implement some smaller features like this that I miss. Performance increases are made with every release as well. I don't think it as that they "don't care" at all, they are just limited. – Murphy, on February 28, 2009 16:52

I also long for global hotkeys for Songbird in osx. I use quicksilver to create make a hotkey for iTunes to pause and play the song, and I always accidentally hit it while I'm in Songbird but to no avail.

I also think there should be a way spread the word about music with your friends. I made this suggestion about being able to recommend or send music to friends, and I think this type of thing would really make music programs a lot more useful and enjoyable.

I don't mind using an addon to do it, but I think it should be a standard feature as well. I don't think it is too uncommon to want to hide the left sidebar if you don't need to navigate to playlists or radio stations often. I end up feeling like the left sidebar is just taking up space.
