Nabeel Hyatt replied on September 24, 2008 03:06 to the question "questions about creating accounts via the API" in Get Satisfaction:
I can say that we choose Help Center because we personally have done a first pass of customization (http://alpha.loudcrowd.com/help/helps...) and have designs on several key things we want to alter about the flow.
But mainly it was about having a site that felt more a part of "us" than another service, which is precisely what the current registration flow (as well as the emails you receive) really breaks.
I'm hoping you guys can hop on this and help craft a solution. I've got a couple possible one's, but if no one has allocated time it's not really worth delving into.
Nabeel Hyatt replied on September 24, 2008 02:56 to the question "Decrease Logins with HelpCenter- Oauth or Anonymous Posting?" in Get Satisfaction:
We have exactly the same issue, and are interested in fast tracking any solution that allows us to access the Get Satisfaction API & use Help Center without having to require registering for yet another account.
Possible solutions include
- allowing us to register you a Get Satisfaction account automatically (by passing through an oAuth credential and getting approval from users). So it's fairy transparent for the user. I'm fine with them having to click Approve, it's filling out their data again.
- allow helpcenter to pass the data over, so we can customize the flow on our end. this is less great, but might be workable, I'd have to test and see the drop off.
- allow "anonymized" posting that still tracks to a oauth token. basically we already know who the user is (we have a cookie, they've logged in) so they post on GS as anonymous until they enter in data, and you use a different internal key so you can still track their posts/etc
.. i dunno.. anything? anything at all.
Thor Muller's reply to "Decrease Logins with HelpCenter- Oauth or Anonymous Posting?" was just promoted to the most useful! Nabeel Hyatt and 2 other people think it's one of the best replies.
These are good points. The first issue is that logins are not handled anywhere as gracefully on Help Center as they are here on the main site. Since Help Center is an open source templating system that works on top of our web service, we welcome any refinements that people want to make in that regard, and hope to be able to spend more time on that in the future.
As for your suggestion--passing through your already authenticated users--we are experimenting with a solution that works to this end. We're not prepared to announce it yet, but you can email me directly if you'd like to try it out as soon as it's available. I'm thor at this domain.-

Nabeel Hyatt replied on September 24, 2008 02:40 to the question "Get Satisfaction registration flow sucks." in Get Satisfaction:
I think the flow is absolutely made worse in the situation where you are logging in from another website. It's incredibly jarring to allow for customized front ends (such as help center) but then require this intermediate create account page.
i'll post some suggestions on this elsewhere, but i think, for folks building APIs to your service that already have accounts for these users and oauth credentials - there has to be a better way than making you sign up for yet another account.

Nabeel Hyatt replied on September 18, 2008 00:59 to the idea "More Social" in Conduit Labs:
Hi Flacsi. Alpha is over as soon as we feel like we've gotten the core parts of the game stabilized, and feel like people are enjoying it (eg it's fun). That means we want to tackle things like the current performance/stability issues so it can handle more people, and to add features to make it feel more like the community we're looking to build. And yes, that certainly means making it more social.

Depending on your internet connection, browser version, speed of computer, and version of Flash, you may indeed hit performance issues. Our goal is to have our games work as universally as possible, which is one of the reasons we picked Flash, so we are working hard on this problem.
We have a bunch of approaches to improve performance, but none of them are quite ready for prime time yet. As soon as they are stable we'll have them up.
