A comment on the problem "Multiple accounts with the same email." in Xmarks:
Hi Tim,
Uupin uses an email address that starts with tank_ and ends with hotmail.com. Convictski uses a live.com.au address. Hope that helps. For either account, you'll need either the password or access to the email address to gain access. From there you can change the password or email address to anything you like. – pennyc, on December 23, 2009 01:12

pennyc replied on December 21, 2009 19:05 to the question "Once AGAIN, XMARKS WON"T INSTALL ON FIREFOX????? CAN WE ACTUALLY FIX THIS PROBLEM PLEASE? and YES I AM SHOUTING!!!!!" in Xmarks:
Wow Jesse, I'm sorry you're having such a hard time. Reinstalling Windows is really going above and beyond--no wonder you're so frustrated.
I'm sorry I don't have a better answer for you. The installation mechanism is completely controlled by Firefox--there's nothing an extension writer does for installation--i.e. there's no "installer code" or anything like that.
So let me ask a few questions, and maybe something will shake loose:
- Tell me the version of Windows and Firefox you're running?
- Do you have administrator privileges on your Windows account (not that it should matter)?
- Since being unable to install Xmarks, have you been able to install other extensions?
I think I know the answer to this, but you should review (again?) this little tidbit from Mozilla: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/U...
If deleting the extensions.ini etc files doesn't fix the problem, maybe you can check to make sure you can create files in the extensions directory in general? Just to make sure there isn't some file system level permissions thing preventing you from installing the extension.
Sorry for all the headaches, and I hope we can get you on your way again soon.
pennyc replied on December 21, 2009 18:47 to the question "Sync all, with different bookmark toolbars?" in Xmarks:
Eric, what you want to do is to make one big toolbar folder that has all the folders/bookmarks you might want on either machine. Then use the Sync Profile manager to exclude the Chrome toolbar bookmarks from your work profile, and the Firefox toolbar bookmarks from your home profile. Set up the profiles on your machines et voila! Different toolbars on each profile.

If only Xmarks had the staff, revenue, and resources of Apple or Google! Wouldn't that be dreamy? Mmm, public stock options.....
...oh I'm sorry, got lost in a little reverie there. I'm here to help! Are you having a problem with Xmarks? Is something not working as advertised? Please let us know if you have a question we can address.
pennyc replied on December 21, 2009 18:31 to the question "Sync a Folder" in Xmarks:
You can set up sync profiles to get this behavior, just exclude all of her bookmarks from the profile you use on your computer. And you'll need to put all your bookmarks in some sort of top level folder so that it all shows up in one folder on her machine. But again, there's nothing that would prevent her from messing with your bookmarks on her machine. Xmarks is about syncing bookmarks between machines, not opening up read-only windows on other people's machines.
You might also use the share feature to set up an RSS feed of all your bookmarks on her machine. That might work more like you want it to. You can read about the Share feature for bookmarks here: http://www.xmarks.com/about/features/...

Hi Jim, so sorry to leave this issue hanging...sometimes it's hard to see the forest for the trees in here. The separate login is because GetSatisfaction hosts this forum, and there's no (free anyway) shared account info between Xmarks and GS. Sorry about that.
As for your corruption problem, we are very concerned and could use your help. We think we may have a bug and we're looking for reproduceable cases. If you could contact us at support@xmarks with the following information, we'd be grateful:
* The URL of this post
* Your Xmarks username
* The logfile from the browser where you first noticed the corruption (find your logfile via Tools > Xmarks > Settings if you're using Firefox)
* A list of all the browsers you're using Xmarks with (Firefox, IE, Safari, Chrome)
Thanks for your help, and sorry for the delay! If we get to the bottom of it via email, either you or I can update this thread.

pennyc replied on December 16, 2009 19:23 to the problem "still opening tab" in Xmarks:
It could be that a config setting got stuck somehow. Try going to about:config and searching for this setting: extensions.xmarks.successShown. It should be set to true. If not, change it from false to true and your problem should go away.
If it's already set to true, is it possible that somehow you set that page to be your home/start page accidentally?

pennyc replied on December 15, 2009 21:39 to the problem "WARNING: Do not use Xmarks to synchronize other browsers." in Xmarks:
Hi Jack,
I'm sorry you're having trouble syncing your bookmarks. I don't think your issue is cross browser sync, however. And if you've successfully uploaded from one of your browsers, then there's no way the server would not reflect the changes. So I think we need to dig deeper into what's going on with you.
We're a few days behind in our support email, but I can't find any new mail from anyone named Jack. If you could either check your spam inbox, or post here with your username and/or email address or the ticket # that was assigned to you when you wrote in to support, we can try to find your email and get you straightened out as soon as possible.
I'm sure we can get you back to where you were! I know 10k bookmarks is way too many to deal with unscrambling on your own. So sorry for the trouble and frustration.

That *does* sound annoying, and we'd love to get to the bottom of it. The best way would be to start looking at your xmarks log files, to see if you you can find which browser is the culprit. An easy way to access your logfile is via your Xmarks Settings window.
* In Firefox go to Tools > Xmarks... > Settings
* In Internet Explorer, double click on the Xmarks logo in your task bar
* In Safari, click on the Xmarks icon, then select Xmarks for Safari Settings
...then click on the "Advanced" tab, and click "Show Log File". This will open up your Xmarks logfile in a new window. You'll want to scroll to the bottom of the file and look for some commands that say "delete".
I'd start with IE. Since IE is the outlier with respect to how it treats toolbars, it's automatically the main suspect.
Good luck and please let us know what you find! If you find the offending log files and still need help getting to the bottom of the problem, you can post some log file snippets here, or email us at support@xmarks.

pennyc replied on December 15, 2009 18:22 to the question "Sync a Folder" in Xmarks:
We don't recommend setting up Xmarks on computers that aren't yours. Probably better just to access your bookmarks online at http://my.xmarks.com.
If you really want to have your bookmarks there for a long time, you can set up Sync Profiles to sync just the bookmarks you want to your friends computer. Note that this would mean that your friend could start adding/deleting/moving bookmarks in that folder too. More on Sync Profiles here:

pennyc replied on December 14, 2009 22:02 to the problem "Jumbled up links" in Xmarks:
We're very sorry for any trouble we may have caused with your bookmarks. We've received a few reports of this behavior, leading us to believe that we have a bug affecting a very small number (i.e. < 1%) of our users. Alas, all our attempts to reproduce the problem have failed. You can help us track this down! What would be really useful is if you could send email to support@xmarks with the following information:
* The URL of this post
* Your logfile from the machine that is messed up (find your logfie via Tools > Xmarks > Settings > Advanced if you're on Firefox)
* A list of all the browsers you're using Xmarks with (e.g. Firefox only, Firefox and IE, etc.)
In the meantime, please use our Restore feature to get your bookmarks back into their proper state, before things started going awry. We haven't had any reports of recurrence, so performing a Restore should get you straightened out. You can access the Restore feature via Tools > Xmarks > Settings > Restore (on Firefox), or by visiting http://my.xmarks.com and selecting "Explore and Restore..." from the Tools menu.
Thanks for your patience and help! Once we get to the bottom of this bug, we'll release an update immediately.

pennyc replied on December 14, 2009 21:48 to the question "basic sync question" in Xmarks:
Sync is a hard thing to understand sometimes, so I don't think your question is too basic. The thing to remember is that by installing Xmarks on each browser you want to sync, you're saying "make all of these the same". So whatever you do on one affects all the others. There's no master/slave. A bookmark deleted at work will be deleted at home too. A bookmark added at home will be added at work too.
Even if you're syncing infrequently (and we recommend you just leave the auto-sync enabled so you don't have to worry about these things), the changes will be reconciled, regardless of the order in which they occurred. There are a small number of conflicts that Xmarks can't figure out on its own, in which case you'll be asked how you want to fix it. (E.g. you insert a bookmark into a folder on machine A, and on machine B you delete that folder, then you sync both machines.) There should be no occasion where you sync machine A, then machine B, and changes are lost.
So the short answer is that you shouldn't worry about it, that the right thing should "just happen". If it doesn't, please let us know!
