ppgs replied on April 17, 2008 04:12 to the question "Working with MS Word while having a phone conversation with Skype. Which activity gets reported?" in RescueTime:

    ppgs
I checked the detail. Here is the result:

    - If I set my screen-saver to start after 3 minutes, then it will start after 3 minutes, even if I am in a conversation using Skype.
So it means that Skype reports to the system as idle, even if there is an on-going conversation.

    - If I keep Skype as the active window and carry-on my conversation without moving the mouse, Rescue Time will record only the first 2 minutes activity, then assume that I am not using Skype anymore. How bizzare, since "2 minutes" has no meaning in this case!

    - If I switch to Word just after starting the Skype conversation, while keeping talking on Skype, then the conversation in Skype is not logged any more in Rescue Time.

Conclusion: if I have a Skype conversation, it will be logged to its real length in Rescue Time only if I do not work on any other application than Skype, keep the focus on the Skype window, and keep moving my mouse around so as to simulate that the application is active!

In other words, Rescue Time does not record realistically the time spent on making phone calls in Skype. What a pitty...

Dashboard: display the time of the latest upload.
Could you add in the dashboard an indication of when the last data upload was made.

Also, the data collector has a button "send update now". I do not know if it is technically feasible (maybe not, due to browser security), but could you add the same button in the dashboard as well. That would be called something like "Fetch update now".

ppgs replied on April 17, 2008 02:06 to the idea "Pie-charts within Tags" in RescueTime:

    ppgs
My experience is that *concentric* pie charts is a great way to display information. For example, I use the freeware "Scanner" that displays concentric pie charts of my hard disk usage.

    http://www.steffengerlach.de/freeware/

A good thing about Scanner is that when you hover with the mouse over a slice, you get a tip text with very useful information about the slice (its size, etc.), but the tool remains 100% visual.

Scanner uses multilevel and this would work brilliantly for Rescue time: Tag1 being split between app1, app2, etc. It is a great way to immediately pinpoint which tag / application is most time consuming, etc. At a glance of an eye.

Embed the chart for tag details inside the goal setting page.
Could you embed the tag details page in the goal settingpage?

For example, one of my goals is "Spend more less than 2 hours on private stuff", with "private stuff" being one of my tags.

When hovering with the mouse on the text "private stuff", then the chart showing how much time per day I spend on private stuff could appear in a flash, and that would help me set the value for the target.

Instead, I have to click at least 3 links before I can see the details of "private stuff". Goal setting and actual time spent are both linked, it would be nice if you could display both on the same page.

Graphics improvements for goal setting directly in the Detail page.
In the page which displays a tag detail with the hours per day spent on this tag, you also display the goal line. This is great.

Even better would be to add some interaction in the graph: grabbing and moving the line up and down would change the hour value of the goal. Double clicking on the line would jump to edit the goal.

If no goal has been set for this tag, then could you add a link "Add a goal for this tag". When clicked, would add a goal for this tag in the Goal and Alerts page.

All this would make navigation inside the dashboard much much easier...

    ppgs
Excellent idea that developpers should consider. Because we do not spend the same number of hours in front of the PC everyday, percentage of RT time is more useful than absolute number of hours.

Goal setting: "Minutes per day on application x" instead of "Hours per day on tag x"
Hi, I would like to set this kind of goal:

Spend less than 25 minutes per day on application x.

But in the goal setting page, I can only do this:

Spend les than xx *hours* on *tag*

Of course, I could type in 0.4 hours as an approximation of 25 minutes, but entering minutes and not hours is more intuitive.

Second point, how do I enter an application name and not a tag name in the goal setting page?

Working with MS Word while having a phone conversation with Skype. Which activity gets reported?
Talking for 30 minutes on Skype and working on a MS Word document at the same time, how will time be reported?

Will I get 30 minutes for Skype *plus* 30 minutes for MS Word? Or will the Skype part be ignored because the active window is MS word?

If so, is there a way to take into account both applications? How about other applications that do not need keyboard or mouse interaction to be "active" (like Skype, using voice).

    RSS duplicate items
In feedreader, my getsatisfaction RSS feeds keep showing duplicates.
This is because each article ends with

"This reply was posted about 9 hours ago"

So if I check the feed the follwing day, I would get for the same article

"This reply was posted 1 day ago"

Although the text in the feed item has not changed, only this part changes and the rss reader detects a change, so I keep getting older items re-displayed as new unread items.

Could add an option to remove the date indication in the feed items? I do not understand the purpose of this indication, as rss readers are able to get the time directly as reported by the feed, no need to embed this information in the body of each feed item. It just adds useless noise.

Editing the uploaded logs from the dashboard?
    Can I acess the raw data (os_username, app_name, window_title, extended_info, start_time, end_time) from my dashboard?

Can I edit the raw data from my dashboad?

For example, if I want to check the list of window titles have been uploaded for "Microsoft Word", where can I see this?

How can I delete the data with "Resignation letter.doc" in the window title ?

If this is not yet possible, could you add it please? I want to have full control of my data before I am confident in using Rescue Time.

    ppgs
The initial question is about removing the data of all untagged apps, not websites. Could you answer the question, is this possible?

Another way is to make a whitelist for apps, just like there is one for websites. Could you make this a feature request?

ppgs replied on April 15, 2008 01:50 to the question "How can I view window_title data from the dashboard?" in RescueTime:

    ppgs
Same request for me. I do not understand the point in Rescue Time to upload all window title information (in plain English: "file names"), if this information is made un-available in the dashboard, just sitting on Rescue Time's servers.

But for privacy issues, it is definitely better that all the tagging of files and folders is done locally on the machine by the Rescue Time Data Collector.
    Instead of uploading

    app_name: Photoshop
    window_title: 'TopSecretClient_HomePageComp_01.psd'

    then to upload

    app_name: Photoshop
window_title: 'Work' (< - tags defined locally on the machine)

That would also reduce the amount of data uploaded to Rescue Time's servers, therefore reducing its costs (or allowing for more users for the same amount of servers).

Deleting log files in the "uploaded" folder
After uploading the data to your servers, then the log files are moved to
    Local Settings\Application Data\RescueTime.com\logs\uploaded

Is is necessary to keep all files in this folder, or can I delete its contents without problem?

ppgs replied on April 15, 2008 01:25 to the question "privacy : limit the data uploaded to your server" in RescueTime:

    ppgs
    Hi,

I installed rescue time and I must say that it does solve the privacy issue while keeping the interface straight forward and not bloated with options. Well done!

Still, I had something slightly different in mind. By checking "Do not record window titles", Rescue time only sends to the server the name of the app. As someone from you team suggested, there is more useful information than that.

For example, if I work with Microsoft Word, I may work on personal files, or work related files. I want to know the difference between the two.

As I am not confident sending to your servers the name on the files I work on, I would like the Rescue Time Data Collector to detect the category of file and then send that information to the server. In other words, instead of sending

    window_title: 'unlisted'

    I prefer

    window_title: 'work'
    or
    window_title: 'personal'

Rescue Time Data collector uploads the data, then you make all the processing on the server. I prefer to make all the processing locally on my machine, and upload to the server only the processed information that I want to upload.

This requires tagging folders locally on the PC, not just defining tags on your server. Example:
    - folder "D:\documents and Settings\USER\My Documents\Contracts" is "work"
    - "D:\documents and Settings\USER\My Documents\Photos\Rome 2008"is "private"
    - al other folders are "Other".

In fact, you already do this pretty well with websites and the whitelist. Rescue Time Data collector checks the site versus the whitelist and decides to upload the name or not, depending if it is in the list or not.

It would be nice if you could do the same for file and folder names (adding folder tagging).

Please give us more control over the data uploaded to your servers !
