STILL LATER. OK, so a Smart Shelf is just like a SmartFolder, letting you perform (and save) complex searches. If I may make another suggestion, it might be a good idea to include a "New Smart Shelf" item under the File menu. It's not immediately obvious that you first have to choose "New Shelf," and then select the "Smart Shelf" option once you get to the New Shelf pane.
Any way I can download the Help Manual?

I see I have to find out more about the "smart shelf" feature. I will go and learn.
LATER. Under the DL2 "Help" menu, I get the cheery message that "Help isn't available for Library." When I click the link on your website that says, "Launch Delicious Library Help Manual," I get only a blank help screen, no matter how long I wait.
DL2 seems like a great product. How can I learn to use it?

1. How can one search records using more than one field at once?
Use a smart shelf
2. How can one perform an AND or OR search in a given field?
Got an example of what you mean?
3. How can one perform an "omit" search, so that the selected records do NOT show up in the results?
I believe smart shelves let you search on "does not contain"
4. When you pull up a set of records as the result of a search, where does DL2 tell you how many records are in your "found" set?
The search box doesn't display the total but smart shelf searches do

P.S. Sorry to fill your lives with complaints, but I have four more questions, the answers to which are, again, not obvious to me.
1. How can one search records using more than one field at once?
2. How can one perform an AND or OR search in a given field?
3. How can one perform an "omit" search, so that the selected records do NOT show up in the results?
4. When you pull up a set of records as the result of a search, where does DL2 tell you how many records are in your "found" set?
The reason for all these questions is that I'd like to switch from Filemaker Pro to DL2, but I need to be sure that all the search functions I regularly use will still be there. (There are nearly 10,000 items in my collection of books/music/movies, so being able to pull up subsets is critical to me.)

That worked! Thank you very much. :-) But if I may make a suggestion, it would be helpful to include these things more prominently in the documentation. It's non-obvious that to search for a word or phrase in the Notes, you would have to choose to search Descriptions. Adding columns by right-clicking is something one might eventually stumble upon, but as luck would have it, I failed to stumble upon it. I didn't find any guidance to these things in the FAQ or in the Forum.

We've added three search categories to choose from, these include "title or people", "descriptions", or "numbers". If you wanted to search your notes for a specific string, you'd want to select the Descriptions category first, then type in the string you're looking for. You can choose between the different search categories by clicking on the magnifying glass inside the search field.

Thank you; that answers half of my question. The other half concerns the Find function. It's not clear to me how to choose the field/column you want to search. Also, I searched for a text string that occurs many times in the Notes, and only two records showed up. I am baffled.
Sorry to ask such elementary questions, but the answers are not obvious to me.

rzangpo2 asked a question in Delicious Monster on August 26, 2008 22:27:
Is DL2 a database or not?I'm running Delicious Library 2.0.2 (v10487). Perhaps I'm missing the obvious, but how do I sort on a field other than Creator or Title (for example, Publisher/Label)? How do I pull up a subset of items by, for example, the text in a Note? Is DL2 a database program or not? I may just be totally misguided.
