Mad @ FB replied on October 07, 2008 02:59 to the question "facebook account disabled" in Facebook:
My account wasn't disabled that I know of (I was only informed of an incorrect password). However I can't access my account go get my password. Which means I'm in the same boat as a lot of you (no contact from FB, etc.)
THAT BEING SAID
Has anyone tried writing to The Consumerist?
consumerist.com also, suggestions for how best to attack the problem.
They have a pretty good record at raising lots of attention to problems with big companies (Comcast, Southwest Airlines, Best Buy). If it goes big there (and I imagine it would after one person writes a nicely worded email...but the MORE the better!) And if the Consumerist story get's dugg on Digg.com this story will EXPLODE.
This isn't fair: Facebook is only where it is (and making money) because of people like us. Yes, it's a free service, but we're the reason they're making advertising dollars hand-over-fist. The least they could do with all their money is offer quality support for customers they've wronged. Can you imagine an Old Navy tossing you out the front door, and refusing to tell you why?
Sounds like I'm going to be sticking closer and closer to Virb.com (version 2 launching soon!)
A comment on the question "The iPhone isn't syncing to my Macbook via bluetooth!" in Apple:
Noino, I completly disagree with you. Not having to carry that USB cable in my POCKET is an amazing experience...you should try. As for the viruses, I've never head og an Ericsson getting hacked...have you?
Apple better get its things lined up because that will not fly for very long. – JFL, on October 07, 2008 01:44

LeviFig replied on October 06, 2008 20:14 to the problem "My iPhone isn't automatically connecting to my home wifi network" in Apple:
Just to add a voice to this:
- The iPhone does not automatically connect to WEP key protected networks... for some unknown reason! It actually doesn't "see" them, unless you manually go to the WiFi settings and only there it lists them... No idea why!
- The automatic connections work fine on WPA and WPA2 wireless networks... and that's what you all should be using anyway! WEP is the easiest system to crack and you might as well not use any encryption at all...
So, bottom line is:
1- Switch your wireless networks to WPA/WPA2 ASAP!
2- Apple needs to fix these issues with WEP key wireless networks anyway because sometimes, one doesn't have authority over the system to be used (work, public places, etc...).
Hope this helps.

For a little more background in this...
It used to be that there was only a 15 minute window in which you could edit or delete your own reply or comment. We've recently removed the time limit on deleting but are still working on removing the time limit on editing. So once the 15 minutes is past you no longer see "Edit" however, we inadvertently left the "or" in there so what you see is "Delete or". This will be fixed very soon when we remove the time limit on "Edit".

Yes, these moderation tools don't irreversibly remove content. After all, we've baked dispute resolution into the platform so preservation of content is a key feature. – Thor Muller, on October 05, 2008 20:05

Thanks for that clarification Thor. I didn't expect data would be loss -- so was surprised when I heard that characterization. – Chris Messina, on October 05, 2008 19:50

The merge feature as such hasn't actually been completed yet. What we have released is a "redirect" feature, which is part of what will become the merge feature. In any case, the contents of the "child" topics will not be lost when merging. – Thor Muller, on October 05, 2008 18:59

Hrm, I've used GTSN for a while, but I guess I can try to retrain myself to use GSFN...
As for that merge behavior ... hmm ... I suppose I wasn't commenting specifically on whether it's right or wrong (I'd need to think on it a bit more) but whether GSFN charges for it. I thought Tom's comment was a little amusing (I know Tom, so it wasn't a surprising comment from him!) when it seems like he's arguing a strawman point for a cause he himself won't ever worry about. I could be wrong -- maybe he will pay for a premium account some day -- but that wasn't my impression, and that's what I was responding to.
As for the merge behavior -- it seems there might at least be a history of the past topic that points to the new one (though I can see how that might be confusing for search engines and the internal search engine). If you imagine that you'd want to collapse a GSFN site into something more FAQ-like, duplicate questions without new information would become tiresome. In that case, I'd support at least archiving one of the threads. If the threads are both active (as of, say a month), I would hold off on collapsing or merging them, personally. Old threads, however, should be fair game. – Chris Messina, on October 05, 2008 18:53
A comment on the discussion "Announcement: Beta launch of new features" in Get Satisfaction:
The common short term for Get Satisfaction is GSFN, because their shorturl is gsfn.us. And another Thomas has informed me that they do not actually offer merge, it just closes the topic and redirects to another. This way if you have two active threads on the same topic, the contents of one (which may have been useful) are lost when redirecting. – bugmenot, on October 05, 2008 18:32
A comment on the discussion "Announcement: Beta launch of new features" in Get Satisfaction:
Hey Tom, unless you're thinking of paying for a premium account on STFN, what difference does it make to you what features they charge for? Some fast food places charge you to super-size your meal, others offer fries for free. Seems perfectly valid that if you don't see the value in STFN, you can always run and maintain your own hosted BB service for free elsewhere.
If someone decides that such features, in consideration of the entire STFN experience, is worth paying for, they do so because (I would presume) that they've considered the free/open source alternatives. – Chris Messina, on October 05, 2008 18:30
