I understand, still, akamai.grooveshark.com, when looked up from Iceland returns a1961.a.akamai.net, with IP address 193.4.144.72 that via reverse dns resolves to 193-4-144-72.xdsl.is. XDSL.is is owned by Vodafone in Iceland.
So, even if Akamai doesn't have a server in Iceland, it's being routed to an Icelandic host. Maybe that host then routes to another server in Europe which Akamai has, I don't know.

Ah, OK. They clearly have a server in Iceland. When I ping akamai.grooveshark.com, it resolves to an Icelandic IP address. Also, when I tried fooling grooveshark to use akamai.grooveshark.com for all streaming, it returned errors on about 40% off the songs, saying it couldn't play it. Probably because it isn't on the Akamai server in Iceland :) – Magnus, on December 11, 2009 21:44

On a side note, I've found that if Grooveshark tries to buffer a song from the server you call "Akamai" (akamai.grooveshark.com) it's quick, but if I get a server named stream something, it's slow.
I even tried pinging 2 different servers. Akamai.grooveshark.com returned a steady answer of 4ms. stream27b.grooveshark.com was a different story. It answered from 185ms to 194ms. The difference there is huge.
Maybe, if the different stream servers all have the same content, you could force Icelandic IP's to use Akamai. I would think that by doing that, the Icelandic users of Grooveshark would at least not have to suffer :)

Hi boxmonkey,
fantastic to hear that this feature is in, it should do wonders. But yeah, I've still got some buffering issues here from Iceland. It seems like at about 3pm (GMT, Icelandic time) the buffering gets way slow and I can't use Grooveshark without having to wait for the buffer to finish before playing a song. But before 3pm and after about maybe 9pm it works great.
I live on an island ... I'm used to this and it's probably not something on your end. When you want to put up a data center here in Iceland, let me know ;)

I've had this issue since I registered in the beginning ... don't remember how long ago that was. I know a couple of my friends in Iceland that love Grooveshark but hate the fact that after 3pm and 'til like 10pm there is really no use using it cuz it's just waiting for the buffer to load up ... – Magnus, on December 04, 2009 00:22

Well, after 3 pm, Icelandic time, I can't use Grooveshark anymore. I'm on a optical cable network but still the bandwidth gets to low for me to be able to use it normally. – Magnus, on December 03, 2009 22:11

Give VIP members bandwidth priorityThe only thing holding me back from going into the VIP membership is the fact that VIP members do not get bandwidth priority. As soon as that is in the features list, sign me up!
Do you think this is something you are planning for in the future or not?
