A comment on the problem "smtp settings are correct. Why can't I send email with AT&T yahoo?" in Mozilla Messaging:
I have solved my problem. I changed my outgoing smtp address (that ATT said was what it should be) from "smtp.att.yahoo.com" to "mail.mia.bellsouth.net" which was my old address before ATT switched to Yahoo. This has now been working for me. However, on my Outlook Express (that ATT does support) the outgoing address is "smtp.att.yahoo.com". Why the different outgoing addresses for TB and OE is anyone's guess.
Thanks to everyone for their attempts to solve my problem. Hope my resolution helps others. – winnie, on December 16, 2009 03:58

As I've written in my numerous other comments, these are the settings I have and still cannot send email after changing my password. Glad this solved your problem; but apparently it isn't mine. I don't think anyone has the answer. :( – winnie, on December 01, 2009 13:53

The passwords are correct and I did got in to ATT and reenter them to be sure.
I have Thunderbird 2.0.0.23 and there are no updates. I don't see "Use Secure Authentication" option in the outgoing.
I think I am doomed! – winnie, on November 04, 2009 14:29

David is correct. I do have Outlook Express (I just never set up an email account in it since I've always used Netscape/Thunderbird). I will try to set up an email account later this week and see if that works.
Roland - when I enter telnet smtp.att.yahoo.com 465 in Run I get a window that is all black. No error message or anything. – winnie, on November 04, 2009 12:32

I don't have Outlook installed but plan on doing so in a week or two. However, I very much like Thunderbird's email format and don't really want to change. Outlook's format is much like ATT/Yahoo's format (which I don't like at all). – winnie, on November 03, 2009 22:34

Definitely using SSL
outgoing server name is: smtp.att.yahoo.com
Port 465
user name: winnie@bellsouth.net
I find this incredulous since the only thing I did was to change my password (on both bellsouth and Thunderbird).
What do you mean by #3. how do I test other than trying to send an email?
I still think this is an ATT problem and I spend more than 2 hours on the phone arguing with them - to no avail.

Port and server are both correct. (I verified with aTT). I don't have a firewall or router. I disabled my antivirus and ATT says they are not blocking my ip address. What's next? I'm so frustrated! – winnie, on November 03, 2009 20:11

Outgoing user id is my name@ (no % sign).
Server settings are correct - I checked with ATT but here they are:
Server: pop.att.yahoo.com Port 995
Outgoing: my email address - smtp.att.yahoo.com (default)
Server name: smtp.att.yahoo.com
Port: 465
Secure connection: 465
I believe it is an att issue but they say no and will not assist with Thunderbird.
Please, please help.
Thank you.-

winnie reported a problem in Mozilla Messaging on November 02, 2009 19:15:
smtp settings are correct. Why can't I send email with AT&T yahoo?I changed my password on ATT/Yahoo and in Thunderbird. I can download messages but can't send. Before I made the change, I had no problems receiving or sending. When sending, I get the following message: "The message could not be sent because connecting to SMTP server smtp.att.yahoo.com failed. Verify your SMTP server setting is correct." I've read all the knowledge base q&A. I have confirmed with ATT that my settings incoming and outgoing are correct. I had this problem before and ATT was able to resolve it...but apparently they can't (or won't)now. I can't even pay for a resolution. Can anyone help? I like Thunderbird and don't want to change unless I absolutely have to. Does anyone know why ATT won't support Thunderbird or Mozilla?
I apparently don't know what I'm doing since I only received 1 response and referred to Canada. I'm in Florida using ATT/Bellsouth.net

I am having the same problem and cannot get help resolving. I can't even post a request on this site because the "post" tab doesn't work. This is my problem:
