Plurk didn't do it for me: flat discussion
Plurk. Other than Twitter it has currency: Karma. My notion is that this negatively influences discussion. People discover the system behind Karma gains and start acting upon it. Not nice.

Inappropriate?Interesting that you found plurk was a flat discussion. I've found plurk to be great for on-going discussion - the drop down box makes it easy to follow the thread. Maybe it depends on your group? I've become connected to a lot of people who share ideas & resources & often ask for solutions to professional problems.
I now think of Twitter as statements & plurk as conversation.

Actually, I found Plurk to be interesting the first couple of weeks. Not sure if it's just my group (which was really broad) which indeed had some interesting conversations. Now most of that has made place for, what Entelekheia describes, people who just plurk often to raise their Karma capital. -
Inappropriate?I suppose one can think of Plurk as a game where Karma is the reward, or one can ignore the Karma altogether and just concentrate on following like-minded people and having an occasional conversation with them.
To me, Karma is a measurement of how often someone plurks, not how often they have something to say. Since it doesn't really tell me anything more than that, I tend to ignore it and people who hoard it.

Inappropriate? When the plurk is karma related, mitigated by karma, or made expressly to deal with karma. It is utterly boring. Just avoid people that do so and it's a rewarding place where conversations tend to take place easily.
Staff have been pretty adamant in the past about karma not "going away"... but they are also constantly tuning the system.
