How do I change an application's category?
Some of the applications I am using are mis/poorly categorized. For example, Thunderbird and Adium are "Comm (other)" instead of Comm (email) and Comm (instant messenger), respectively. I can't seem to find a way to change this on the application page" http://www.rescuetime.com/details/202711
Thanks,
Todd

Inappropriate? We recently added a voting system for categories that can be reached by going to any of the List Views. Next to the application or website you will see the current category (if one exists) and also a "Suggest" link.
When you click on the "Suggest" link you will be shown a window with a list of all of the RescueTime categories and the option to click a new category to vote on a change.
Each night we have a process that tallies the votes and if there are enough votes to override an existing category then the category for that application or site will be changed.
Thanks! -
but what if we want our custom categories since we sometimes use apps differently. for example i use parallels to run only outlook meaning its exclusively for email but its categorized as 'dev tools' - something i dont use at all. -
Ah, that is a bit trickier - but this is what I do. I use both Parallels and VMWare Fusion on a daily basis. I have RescueTime installed on each of my virtuals (I run a Windows XP, Vista, and Ubuntu virtual). In my RescueTime.com dashboard, I have set Parallels and VMWare Fusion to be ignored. This prevents my time from being doubled up when I switch from my host os to one of the virtual os environments.
So, that way - each of the applications that I use, regardless of which virtual OS they are on, get time attributed correctly. In your case, you would now see Outlook listed as an application along with your other native OS apps. Hope that helps some! -
In my case, MSWord comes up as "Design/Presentation", whereas I use it to write, which is my work. How can I change the tag for the time I spend in MSWord to something like "jobs", or "work"? -
But why not let every user change the categories by themselves. And then evaluate the data of the changes. Thus you have automatic feedback and the user instantly gets, what he wants. -

This is an absolute stopper for me. I'm a sysadmin and it shows time I spend ssh'ing to servers as "Social networking". Aieee! I could never show this to my coworkers! -
Inappropriate?joe - interesting logical approach but i'm just not inclined to put that much effort into it especially as we can use custom tags. i guess i will wait to see how it develops but thanks for the idea!
I’m thankful

Inappropriate?I think it would be very valuable to be able to change Categories for some applications. For me, the problem is Lotus Notes. It's listed as Comm (email), which is good, of course. Only that I use it solely as a Dev Tool and would like it categorized as that.
Sure, I can Tag Lotus Notes as "work" or "development", but then I have to tag everything. It is supernice to get all other categories automatically. If I switch to tags, then I have to tag every last blog or site I visit.
Doesn't this make sense? (It does to me ;-) )
I’m really wanting this feature
-
Inappropriate?I understand your response, but I don't like the answer. It's hard to believe that this issue has not gotten more responses in the past 5 months. I REALLY WANT CUSTOM CATAGORIES!
I’m waiting for custom catagories.

Inappropriate?I agree, not having the capability to override a category is a showstopper for me. I started using tags but then I have to tag every single application, every single website, etc. It's too much work and I can't do it any more. So until I can override a category I'm afraid RescueTime isn't much use to me.
It's been 6 months since this thread was started so I'm not expecting it to be fixed any time soon. That's sad, because otherwise it's a great application. I hate to see a project go unused because of such a simple missing feature.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? So, official reps, Would you consider adding this feature to your otherwise very good application after all?
I’m hoping for a new answer from the official reps

Inappropriate? The answer right now to non-custom categories is tags. Tag everything and ignore the categories, they arent useful if they don't reflect your usage. I have hidden the Categories widget from my Dashboard and just view things according to my tags now, and it works well.
I do agree that custom Categories seems like an obvious addition, though once you have custom categories, there may not be a need for Tags...
Maybe a better way to go would be either tags OR categories (only one), make sure the user can customize them, and don't auto-tag/customize anything. Invite the new user to start tagging/categorizing as they use the product and they will start to see their usage patterns over time. -
Inappropriate?Tags is not a solution. I have to tag all the websites I visit every day, and often buried in all the surfing websites is an application that I actually use. It's a treasure hunt. I don't have time for it.
The voting system is clearly flawed. I mean it provides a nice default but it's obvious that that default won't work for everyone. Tags are cool for special things but tagging untagged items is a real pain.
I've reached my limit of usefulness with RescueTime until this feature is added. If we don't get some kind of confirmation from the rescuetime developers then I'll come back in 6 months to see if it's there. Overall it was cute and fun but it has told me what I already know. My productivity is between 1.5 & 1.8, I spend very little time in email or chat. So until it can tell me more about what sites I visit and what applications i use, I really don't see a use for me.
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?I still maintain that Tags are working well. Each week, start looking through your list of untagged sites/apps, and youll see them sorted by the amount of time you spent on each one. Anything that falls below a few minutes, I just delete. Anything above a few minutes, I can easily tag.
I also am keeping my tagging to a minimum to make it quicker. I use a tag for either work or personal items, then categorize them by the type of activity: social, communication, procrastination, etc. That makes it very simple.
Voting is fairly lame though. I think that Categories could just be done away with and rely on Tags, and focus on making tagging easier or predictive? -
Inappropriate? It is now much easier to categorize any application. Just click the icon that looks like a pencil and paper next to any application's category.
The company says
this answers the question
-
Inappropriate?absolutely doesn't answer the question. at all..i mean where are the applications in the first place? all you can see is categories and clicking on the edit ( the pencil and paper icon..wow) can only change productivity scores. BUT:
How can I Edit the "Applications" defined in any given category?
I’m frustrated
