Looking for a few good volunteers
RescueTime is looking for a few good volunteers to help us test out the next generation of the RescueTime installable client (version 2.0).
We expect there will be issues with the new RescueTime client and it will likely not work with all system configurations. We have done extensive testing internally and are ready to broaden our test base with a set of volunteers who don't mind helping us out.
Features of RescueTime 2.0:
Specific Features of RescueTime 2.0 for OS X:
Specific Features of RescueTime 2.0 for Windows:
You can download the Beta installers from here:
http://www.rescuetime.com/installers/... (Windows)
http://www.rescuetime.com/installers/... (OS X)
We are still quite actively developing these new RescueTime clients, so updates will be frequent, but with the automated background updates - you should only notice the version number changing - and the client getting better each day!
Please report issues to this thread or directly to team AT rescuetime.com
Known Issues:
- While there are Proxy configuration settings in the client, they are not yet active in the code so will have no impact on the RescueTime client - we'll have those working in the next day or so
- The OS X client will only work Intel based processor Mac's, we hope to have a PowerPC version rolled out soon
- The OS X client has only been tested with OS X 10.5, we'd love to hear from any 10.4 testers on how it works for them
- The Windows client has been tested with Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7 - 32bit and 64bit versions of all of those systems. It should also work with Windows 2000, and would love to find a couple of testers with Win2K to help out
Thank you!
We expect there will be issues with the new RescueTime client and it will likely not work with all system configurations. We have done extensive testing internally and are ready to broaden our test base with a set of volunteers who don't mind helping us out.
Features of RescueTime 2.0:
- A simplified user interface - most settings will now be managed from the RescueTime.com website, and for teams and businesses using RescueTime, settings can be shared account wide, greatly simplifying installation for a large number of users.
- More accurate time recording - the new RescueTime client was built from the ground up with accuracy being our key objective. Network issues, non-responsive external applications, and other issues should no longer affect the time recording functionality of RescueTime.
- More intelligent idle, sleep, and hibernation detection
- Faster updates sent to your RescueTime.com dashboard
- A common code base between OS X and Windows - bug fixes and new features are much easier to implement
- Enhancements for enterprise wide deployments, silent installation with response files and the ability to pass configuration information at the command line
- Automated background updates - allow uninterrupted updates of the RescueTime client so you don't lose any of your productive time
Specific Features of RescueTime 2.0 for OS X:
- RescueTime should now use significantly less CPU and use slightly less memory than the 1.0 client version
Specific Features of RescueTime 2.0 for Windows:
- RescueTime no longer depends on the Microsoft .Net 2.0 framework - which means a much simpler installation process especially in the enterprise environment
- Support for Internet Explorer, Firefox and Google Chrome web browsers
You can download the Beta installers from here:

Inappropriate?RescueTime 2.0 meet virgin crash on my leopard 10.5.5
the detail is
http://maweis.com/2009/03/16/rescueti...
-
Maven - there's a new build up on the download link, see if it fixes your problem. -
Inappropriate?I'll try soon
-
Inappropriate?I got the new RescueTime Version: 2.0.0 (2.0.0.335)
It still crash when I open textmate -
Inappropriate?ok fixed. I'm glad you caught that, I had just changed the code that checks versions and it worked on most things but I guess not TextMate, heh...
-
Inappropriate?I'm afraid it seems to be a no-go on Windows 2000. The install goes okay, and correctly detected (and quit) my previous version of RescueTime. But when I click on the RescueTime icon in the Start Menu, I get nothing. No icon in my system tray, not even a process in the Task Manager that I can find. I've tried double clicking on the icon itself (in its Program Files folder), and even calling it from the command line - where it displays no text output, but displays no window either, and promptly drops me back to a new prompt.
The previous version of RescueTime seemed to work on this machine (which is actually a VM on an Intel Mac), so I'm not sure what's going on. The previous version did display an error message, but as long as I clicked Ignore, it worked fine... this one doesn't work at all :(
Great to see that there's work on a version 2.0, though!
I’m disappointed
-
Inappropriate?Locked and loaded :-P
Keep up the great work! -
Inappropriate?@SyneRyder - thanks for trying it out on Windows 2000 - I'm bummed that it just didn't work out of the box.
I'm trying to hunt up a Win2K install disk to get a virtual environment setup for testing and I'll let you know what I find. -
Inappropriate?@SyneRyder - another thought I have is to see if the new client made it far enough along to write out a debug_log.txt file.
I'm not quite sure of the exact location on Win2k, but the directory on Windows XP is:
C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Local Settings\Application Data\RescueTime.com\log\debug_log.txt
If you have a file under there, then that tells me that RescueTime 2.0 is at least getting part way through the start up. If that is the case, then we might be able to get more details on what is going on by changing the debug_log_level.
To do this, start RescueTime.exe from the command line with the option:
RescueTime.exe --debug_level=4
This will enable a very verbose level of debug output that should write to the debug_log.txt file.
If there is some meaningful information there - send it to me at team AT rescuetime.com
Thanks! -
Reply is on its way! Seems to be having problems creating the initial dialog (error 1407) -
Inappropriate?I love the new refresh rate. Now all we need is an auto-refresh (or live information) on the Dashboard and tracking can be near real-time.
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate? It does not seem to work on my 10.4 Tiger version. It does not start up at all. So there's something to work on still... *reinstalls the old one*
Does the new version contain support for document or folder tracking? This is the main reason why I need a timetracker.
I’m glad you guys are working so hard on an update, but with this version I am not so happy...
-
We just pushed out a new version that should solve some compatibility issues (including better support for OS X 10.4 and PowerPC macs). You can download it from the download page here:
http://www.rescuetime.com/download_mac -
Inappropriate?I'm building a 10.4 Universal Binary today - I'll try to have it up soon. Having trouble with the PowerPC support right now so we'll see if that makes it in, but this version should be really quite stable.
I’m confident
-
Inappropriate?ok I put up a 10.4 compatible (Intel-only) new version and triggered auto-update, so you can either download the new one or wait until yours upgrades itself. The new build number is 2.0.0.525. (you can see that in the about window). We'll try to get a PowerPC build up soon. I'm very proud of the CPU footprint on this one, and it should be more crash resistant.
Thanks everyone, let me know how it goes.
Josefini - these new clients will support document tracking (but so will the old ones) once we release that feature on the website in the next few weeks.
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate? Is it right to assume the download URLs haven't changed?
I’m totally stoned right now, like, totally, dude... oh look, a doggie
-
Inappropriate?that's right - I just keep overwriting the old installer with new ones, and if it's important enough, I'll just push an auto-update out and the app will magically get the update for you and restart itself.
-
Inappropriate? The lack of application preferences (just links to the site prefs) is not a fav. Mostly I'm looking for the option to open on start up like before. Hopefully the lack of this is just b/c it's BETA, but I wanted to pass along how much I like that feature.
I’m unsure
-

-
Inappropriate? The idea is you'll be able to control all of the application settings on the website (and they'll be automatically received by the app). We haven't turned on all of those settings on the website yet, but we'll start doing that soon. Also, it does automatically set itself to launch on startup right now.
-
Inappropriate?I've been using it for a couple of days and it crashes 1-2 times a day. What information do you need? The coredmp file? Some RT log?
Also, there doesn't seem to be a way to prod it to update. I'm running 2.0.0.479 and want to update to the one you mentioned above. Should I just wait?
-
Inappropriate?Hey Kate - it looks for an update every 10 minutes or so, and you should have an update message waiting in the queue, but if you're crashing before that, it's probably not working. You're probably best served downloading the installer from the URL above again (it's new) and re-installing. This one shouldn't be as crashy, but if it does, click on the Report button that pops up and send the contents of the window to brian@rescuetime.com. Thanks!
-
Thanks. I quit RescueTime, then downloaded and ran the installer at http://www.rescuetime.com/installers/....
When I open the RT window, it still says I have 2.0.0.479. -
Inappropriate?@Kate, the Windows and OS X versions of RescueTime don't stay 100% in-sync with the release numbers. Right now 2.0.0.479 is the most recent version of the Windows client.
If regards to the crashes that you are seeing, there is a debug_log.txt file that might contain a bit more information as to what is going on. Be default the debug level of the client is very low, so it only catches some information.
If there is any meaningful information in your debug_log.txt please email it to me at team AT rescuetime.com.
You can find your debug_log.txt in:
Windows XP
C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Local Settings\Application Data\RescueTime.com\log\debug_log.txt
Windows Vista
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\RescueTime.com\log\debug_log.txt
Also, let me know which version of Windows you are running and if you are running 32bit or 64bit. Oh - and which web browser.
I'll see if I can track down what is crashing and get you an update asap.
Thanks! -
Inappropriate?Sorry, my debug_log doesn't contain anything useful (just RT starts and stops).
I'm using Windows XP (32 bit) and Firefox 3.0.7. I haven't been able to reproduce the crashes, but they seem to happen when I'm working in the browser. -
Inappropriate? Thanks for the additional information. I'm going to put in a few more debug statements surrounding the code that handles URL information to see if we can capture what is going on.
You should automatically get the update after I've pushed it out a little later today. If you have a crash tomorrow - hopefully there will be some better information the debug_log.txt - we can also set your debugging level a bit higher to give more detail.
I'll let you know when you can expect to have the update - thanks -
Has this come out yet? I'm still crashing regularly and the debug_log.txt doesn't contain any more info. -
Kate, I just pushed out an update for the Windows client, you should have it in less than 10 minutes. You will know you have the newest version on the settings page says 2.0.0.503. This includes some extra debug logging around the Firefox URL routines. -
Kate, I'm doing more work on the crash I think you are having. I have been able to reproduce it one my test system periodically - and the exception handling I added in is not catching the crash. This likely points to a run-time error that I'm trying to track down now. I appreciate your patience and I'll push out an update once I'm able to eliminate this! -
Ok - I just pushed out another update 2.0.0.508 - that fixes the reproducible crash on my test system. Hopefully this is the same crash you've been experiencing the last couple of days and RescueTime should be a lot more stable for you now...
Let me know - thanks! -
Inappropriate?Hi, was excited to try the new beta, but quickly uninstalled because it does not interface with Rescue Idle Time, which I am using to track my extensive off line work habits. Not sure if this is because of the new code base, but it's a bummer. I would very much like, no, would LOVE it if you would integrate the ability to manually enter off line tasks. Without that feature, Rescue Time-- a FANTASTIC utility-- will not be something I can use.
BTW, I have been using the old version of Rescue Time primarily with Chrome, and have not noticed any glitches.
I’m anxious
-
Inappropriate?@Shelley - thanks for the feedback. Indeed the new RescueTime beta is using a different log format, which breaks some of the 3rd party programs that are out there.
On a positive note, our short term road map does include a manual entry mechanism. -
Such good news. So I will use the real release until then. -
Any news or timeframe on this integrated feature? Our front office staff does a lot of faxing, filing, etc which takes them away from their desk. I already have them trained to use RescueIdleTime, so I can't move them to the new Beta until I have equivelent features for them to accurately track time away from their desk.
Thanks. -
We are internally testing the first iteration of this feature. We hope to have it available for beta testing in the next two weeks. -
A quick update on this, we just enabled a feature that works with the 2.0 version of the client, though it requires a paid account to work. You can read the blog post here: http://blog.rescuetime.com/2009/05/29...
If you have feedback post it here or send an email directly to team AT rescuetime.com -
This is a nice start, certainly better than nothing, but having only three options to pick from is quite restrictive. In an office environment, it may be useful to document your time seperately for filing, faxing, meeting with a customer, internal meetings, preparing marketing materials, and coffee break. That's six distinct categories just off the top of my head. Simplicity is always a good start, but at least a little expandability would go a long way.
Also, I noticed that even if I tell RT to pause for an hour while I take my lunch break, the idle dialog still comes up. This should not happen when RT is disabled. -
Great comments Ross. I'll look into the Away dialog appearing while RescueTime is paused, you are correct, it shouldn't do that. -
Inappropriate? The new client seems to log the applications differently, e.g. I now get "outlook.exe" instead of "MS Outlook". Is this expected or is there a bug somewhere?
Besides that I haven't noticed any problems on my machine sofar. -
I'll look into that Martin. It should be reporting it as outlook (stripping off the .exe) but it's possible there is a bug there. -
It seems that this does not happen all the time. Yesterday I had time reported for "explorer.exe" and also for "Windows Explorer" -
Inappropriate? Is logging enabled by default? Wondering because I noticed a five hour block without updates and went to check the log and saw only two lines about disk ejection. If it's not on by default, can we enable it somehow?
I’m unconcerned
-
There are two types of log files generated with RescueTime 2.0 - the debug_log.txt which by default will only log critical errors, so if everything is working correctly, it should mostly be empty.
The second log - is a temporary disk log of your activity, which will have a *.log extension and should only appear after quitting RescueTime if it still had unsent data in memory OR if RescueTime is unable to communicate with out servers it will periodically clear the log out of memory and save it to disk.
When you say, "Is logging enabled by default" are you referring to the debugging information or the activity data used by the website? -
Was looking for logs on when it was sending updates, so you pretty much answered my question. Is there any way to change the logging level so that it logs server updates? (Not that I need to at the moment, client seems to be back in working order) -
There are a couple of options for seeing when the last server update has occurred. In the RescueTime settings dialog, the Status information should show something like: "Last successful push of time data at 2009-Mar-24 10:23:13" - if there have been no network/communications errors since the last update.
You can also bump up the debug log level by modifying the rescuetimed.cfg file, located up one directory from the debug_log.txt.
To see network activity, quit RescueTime, set the debug_log_level: 3, and restart. You should see data pushes sent every 3 minutes and the client checking for application updates every 10 mins.
If you continue to have issues, there are a bunch of other debug log levels that we can enable, depending on the functional areas we want more information on. The bad part is that the most verbose logging outputs a LOT of information and can impact performance and take up a lot of space. I still have some work to do on maintaining the size of the debug_log.txt file :) -
Inappropriate? Thanks for the update, I have just installed on my workstation (WinXP32). I want to push this to my staff, but to minimize interruption, I would like to do so silently via our domain controls. The intro indicates there are silent install options, can you provide some quick tips on the command line parameters for this, or however else this is done?
I’m hopeful
-
Excellent! I'm just now finishing up some enhancements to our deployment options and would love feedback and testing on the various push options we have built into the new client. Could I get you to send me an email to: team AT rescuetime.com and I'll work up a quick how-to on deployments and get that out to you tomorrow (Thursday).
Thanks! -
Inappropriate?I’ve been happily running the beta on two of my machines for a few weeks now. This morning, while working on something else, rescuetime.exe crashed on one of the machines (standard Windows fault dialog).
Tried restarting rescuetime – immediately crashes.
Tried rebooting – rescutime immediately crashes on boot.
Uninstall/reinstall – back running, no crashes yet.
Did a new build get pushed?
Win XP SP3
Rescuetime 2.0.0.533 -
Ditto. I see the file modify date is from today around the time it crashed, so I'm guessing a new version. I have the same specs as Rob. Haven't reinstalled yet. -
I just published an updated beta installer that fixes one error I found on Windows XP. You will need to re-download and run the beta installer from http://www.rescuetime.com/installers/... - after the installer updates you should be at version 2.0.0.539. Let me know if you still see a crash when RescueTime starts. There are some changes in the configuration file format, so it's possible there is still an issue there.
Thanks! -
That appears to have corrected the crash, thanks Joe. Incidentally, does this new build have the updates you mentioned for the silent/push install? -
Just upgraded both of my machines to 539 -- seems good so far. -
This reply was removed on 03/31/09.
see the change log -
Inappropriate?I have the "Collect detailed web site information" option turned on, but RescueTime is not distinguishing between google.com and google.com/reader. I'm using the Mac client (build 790). Is anyone else having this problem?
-
Inappropriate?Unfortunately the new 10.4 universal (at least I think that's what I have been downloading from here http://www.rescuetime.com/installers/... version does not start on my Tiger 10.4.11 IntelMac version. Is this installer broken (this is the exact same problem I had with it last time) or might there be something else wrong at my Mac's end?
I’m still happy you are making an even better version
-
Oops, sorry about that. Did it actually work on that computer at one point (the new version)? If so, it'll be easier for me to figure out what I broke. :) -
Inappropriate?@ Brian: It never would startup, the earlier version didn't nor the new one. Same problem. I click on the icon and it just does nothing. So I am not sure what to do. Reinstalled stable version for now. If you are able to fix the problem I will try again.
I’m confident you will fix it
-
Inappropriate? There seems to be a problem with standby mode. I just rechecked the details for a few days I was commuting and on nearly all of them the new beta logged whatever app was open before going to standby for the whole time until I resumed work on my laptop.
I am running Windows XP SP3, current version of RescueTime is 2.0.0.533.
From my data this seems to have started on April 2nd. The last day with working standby detection was March 27th for me. The days in between I worked from home without using standby. -
Argh - that's really disturbing, if I'm understanding you correctly. So, for times when you have put your computer in standby mode, you have time on your dashboard for that entire time period? I.e. you put your laptop in standby at 2:00pm and Notepad was in focus, after waking the laptop up at 4:00pm you had 2 hours of Notepad time between 2 and 4?
Could you send an email to team AT rescuetime.com with the email you are using for your RescueTime.com account? I'd like to take a look at the incoming log files for those days.
Thanks! -
Martin, I just pushed out an update (2.0.0.576) that should correct this for Windows users. I was finally able to reproduce it on out test system and it looks like both locking your screen and standby mode was having an issue. You should already have the update through the auto-updater, but if not, you can get it at: www.rescuetime.com/installers/RescueT...
Thanks! -
Inappropriate?Just want to say I will be very happy to help when you release the Mac PowerPC version!
-
Inappropriate?Just trying today's release (26 Apr, probably 2.0.0.576) on Windows 2000 - I'm getting an error after upgrading: "The procedure entry point WTSGetActiveConsoleSessionId could not be located in the dynamic link library Kernel32.DLL". I guess that means Windows 2000 support won't be possible now?
I’m disappointed, but I understand the reasons

Inappropriate?Installed V2. Biggest unhapiness, I lost my website whitelist, which I had set up meticulously over a few months. Couldn't even find the whitelist file.
Other than that, everything looks ok.
I’m frustrated
-
We have moved the whitelist functionality to the website. The primary reason for this was so that RescueTime teams could share a common whitelist. You can get to your whitelist settings by going to: https://www.rescuetime.com/accounts/m... (as long as you are on an individual account or are the Admin of a team account).
Thank you! -
This was going to be a HUGE pain but luckily the file still exists. Just look in C:\Documents and Settings\(your_user_name)\Local Settings\Application Data\RescueTime.com\whitelists and you'll find it. I was about to give up on RescueTime based on the fact that I had to recreate my whitelist, but we're good to go again. Would be nice if the whitelist was automatically transferred to the website, along with the setting to use it. -
Agreed Jessie - we've looked at trying to import existing whitelists into the whitelist on the website. At minimum, we will message this better that you can copy the text from your existing whitelist (and give the location) - into the whitelist setting on the website. I'm hoping we can get this done automatically. -
Inappropriate?I just installed 2.0.0.610. I re-entered the exact same Proxy settings I used with 1.0.7.01 (you should provide some examples as for the format of the fields, e.g. some apps require you type the "http://" prefix, others will dumbly append it by default or automatically if you don't). I systematically got the following "Status" when I clicked the "Test Settings" button :
Activation Failed! Invalid account key
What is this "account key" and how does it relate to the Proxy settings?
At first, although it was obvious (?), I then clicked the Activate button just in case and I got an error message as expected. However, on the Nth attempt, with basically the same proxy settings and although I still got the exact above "account key" error message, I clicked Activate once again and was astounded to see it worked.
I just checked and my Dashboard page reports successfull updates.
Note that it would be simpler for me if I could simply enter the address of an automatic configuration script as IE and Firefox allow instead of having to dig I-don't-remember-which-file to trace back what are the proxy settings.
...but, hey!, don't get me wrong, it's working great now. It's just that those proxy issues are always so annoying.

Thank you for the feedback regarding your experience with setting up RescueTime w/Proxy settings. We will be adding a feature to auto detect proxy settings in the near future. Hopefully, we will be able to grab the autoconfig script right from your Internet Options network settings, so you won't even have to enter the script information into RescueTime. There are so many permutations of Proxy configurations out there, it will be a challenge to get it working in all environments, but that's what we are shooting for.
Also, good point on an example format for the fields. Fortunately the libcurl doesn't really care if the http/https protocol is there for the proxy server, but some examples will help users!
Thanks! -
Inappropriate?Seems my installation of RescueTime is unable to reach the RescueTime servers for 5 days now.
I run version 2.0.0.576 and the status always says: "The RescueTime servers are down for maintenance. RescueTime will automatically retry."
No proxy settings and internet connection is working.
I’m sad

Martin, we did some DNS changes last week and I'm wondering if something there is affecting your RescueTime. We're looking into it now. Some pieces of information that would help:
1. Can you let me know where your Internet Service Provider is located? (Country and City)
2. What are the IP addresses you get back for: www.rescuetime.com and api.rescuetime.com?
Thanks Martin! -
RT could not update this morning (RT icon with a red exclamation mark in the TaskBar). Presently, I have a "successfully sent data..." status. However, I get a
"500'd - An Error has occured on the RescueTime server. ..." when trying to access the Dashboard (I get this URL : http://www.rescuetime.com/). I have no problem with the RescueTime.com Settings page (https://www.rescuetime.com/accounts/m...).
I'm using 2.0.0.628 -
1. My ISP is T-Online Germany, it is a nation-wide ISP so I don't know which city to give.
2. The IP addresses are 75.101.148.71 for www.rescuetime.com
and 64.34.167.26 for api.rescuetime.com -
I still have no connection. Is there anything I can do to help with this issue? -
Martin - I apologize, I let the ball drop on this one. Can you send me an email via team AT rescuetime.com? I'll forward you some instructions for enabling some detailed network debug log information so we can track down what is going on. -
Inappropriate?@Denis - try going to this url and then re-logging in
http://www.rescuetime.com/logout
you might have a problem with your cookies -
I tried your URL and as for http://www.rescuetime.com/dashboard and http://www.rescuetime.com/, I only get 500'd errors. I tried them after
removing my RT passwords from Firefox database and restarting Firefox. I don't have problems accessing the secure https://www.rescuetime.com/, logging in and then getting the secure https://www.rescuetime.com/dashboard. But all non-secure www.rescuetime.com pages get me 500'd errors. Wouldn't it be related to the DNS changes Joe (Official Rep) wrote about 3 hours ago?
As I said previously, the "RescueTime.com Dashboard" button of Rescue Time preferences is linked to the (non-secured) http://www.rescuetime.com/dashboard URL. Adding the "s" (as in "https") is one workaround although I'm not sure it was thought this way. -
Denis, could you send us an email to team AT rescuetime.com with the account email that you are using for RescueTime.com? We can check it to see if there is a data issue that is preventing the main dashboard from displaying. It is unlikely that the 500 errors are related to the DNS changes - so we are guessing there is a bug with your account.
Thanks! -
It must be in your Inbox by now.
