Twhirl 0.8.7 doesn't work on Ubuntu 8.04
Twhirl 0.8.7 doesn't start on my Ubuntu 8.04 any more. I've installed adobe AIR from adobeair_linux_b1_091508.bin. Twhirl 0.8.6 used to work fine. After upgrade, when launching application, Adobe AIR says: "This application requires a version of Adobe AIR which is no longer supported."

Hi everyone,
apologies for breaking the Linux support in twhirl with the latest release.
We have created a version with the same functionality as the current 0.8.7 build, but based on the previous AIR build 1.1, which is available as a beta release for Linux.
Please get the installer from here:
http://www.twhirl.org/files/twhirl-0....
Of course, it will not only work on Linux, but on any system that has at least AIR 1.1 installed.
Let us know if you encounter any issues.

Inappropriate?@Luciano and @cuu508: how did you get these logs? Even on console I don't get any valueable output.

Inappropriate?I confirm this error. As well reproducible on my Kubuntu 8.10. This seems to be an issue related to Twhirl's upgrade to AIR 1.5 which is not yet supported on Linux platform (so far only 1.1-beta version is supported). Is there any workaround for this issue or do we have to wait until Adobe releases updated AIR (1.5) for Linux platform?...
I’m confused

touch ~/.airappinstall.log
Then you could follow it's contents as follows:
tail -f ~/.airappinstall.log

Inappropriate?I have the same problem, but I'm on Kubuntu 8.10. The issue is that in 8.7 they "upgraded twhirl to Adobe AIR 1.5" but the linux version of AIR isn't keeping pace with the other versions yet.

Inappropriate?Same problem, it is because of adobe new version, it would be extremely awesome if they posted a linux specific version until adobe gets its act together, twirl is the only lin-twit i like for my eee's small screen, until adobe or twirl do something i'm stuck with the twitterHome:( Please Please make a linux-version that signs in cool, cause adobe will take months to update the linux adobe (were still on BETA 1.1, everyone else is at air1.5) To twirl developers, you have made an incredible application and i would love to not have to have a virtual box running to use it, i implore you to make a 1.1 compatible version...please and thankyou?
-
Inappropriate?any news about ? i use ubuntu 8.10 and and adobeair_linux_b1_091508.bin i try to update from 0.8.6 to 0.8.7 and get the same issues that posting everyone in this topic
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? It's obviously an issue with Adobe's AIR version for GNU/Linux as said above. It'd be awesome if you guys could roll out a version for this, but it's totally understandable if you can't do it.
Anyway, great job with Twhirl and I guess I'll see you when Adobe launches AIR 1.5 for GNU/Linux :)
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate? It's kind of crappy, and bad form, to include a platform upgrade with a fix to an API problem which completely renders the old version useless. If you had made 0.8.7 just fix the twitter issue, and then bundled the upgrade to air platform 1.5 in the /next/ version, we could still at least use the old version. As it stands, twhirl is completely useless until you find a workaround because we can't log in with the old version, and can't upgrade because of platform. Tsk.
I’m annoyed.
-
Inappropriate?Yeah, I don't get it. Why alienate Linux users?
The feature difference in 1.5 can't be THAT amazing that they needed to do that just to fix a twitter API issue.
I’m having a very bad morning
-
Inappropriate?Hi folks.
Sorry for the issue, but thank you for reporting this. I'll try to figure out the possibilities of a separate release. Meanwhile, you should be able to down grade back to 0.8.6 to get up and running for now.
Thank you for your patience. -
Thomas, are you saying to re-download 0.8.6? Because I can't login with 0.8.6 right now due to twitter API changes... so how do we get around that issue? -
Mark, you're right. I spoke too soon... It sounds like this is the reason the update had to go out so fast, and why we didn't have time to check for compatibility on linux. Sorry for the additional confusion. -
So you're trying to tell me is that the Twhirl team made a decision like changing the version of the required underlying runtime, which is a pretty big decision, very quickly, with no discussion of the impact on the Twhirl user community.. ? That doesn't give me much confidence in the team, I'm sorry to say.
You can't possibly tell me that AIR 1.5 was required to fix the twitter api issue, because, quite frankly, if that were true, then tweetdeck wouldn't work for me right now.
To say '...we didn't have time to check for compatibility on linux...' also leaves me a little worried. It seems like you are saying the Twhirl team basically just decided 'oh.. this whole section our user base... we don't really need to worry about them, they're not important. If it works great, but if it doesn't, then they can use another product, who cares'. That makes me feel like a <sarcasm>real valued member of your product community.</sarcasm>.
I really like the Twhirl product, I and I still do, I think its the best twitter client out there, but the way you guys are managing your end users right now is atrocious. -
Inappropriate?I'm having the same problem, only with Suse 11 and AIR alpha (beta doesn't install on my system). I'd be happy to stay with 0.8.6 but it doesn't seem to log in to twitter any more :(
i've tried all other clients and i keep coming back to twhirl because it's so awesome. thanks for the good work!
I’m sad but hopeful
-
Inappropriate?Obviously this wasn't an "oops, didn't expect that to happen" thing. They know what versions of AIR are supported on Linux.
I’m frustrated
-
"..didn't have time to check for compatibility on linux."
Check for incompatibility? Wouldn't the incompatibility be obvious? -
Inappropriate?Thomas Knoll, the problem doesn't solve down grade back to 0.8.6, it doesn't connect, the problem is with Adobe Air version used for run 0.8.7.
Really really we need a Linux Version of Twhirl.
I’m frustrated
-
Hi ygallardo, yeah, sorry about that. Please see my reply above. -
Inappropriate?Well, I have found a workaround. 0.8.6 doesn't work with twitter, but it does work with identi.ca. identi.ca can be setup to forward it's postings on to twitter. It's a little circuitous, but it's got twhirl posting to twitter:)
I’m displeased
-
Inappropriate?yes well I agree with everyone except the grumpy guy above. Twhirl is rockin. Thanks for your hard work. I understand how it goes with having to develop for multiple platforms, especially in a situation like this.
The only thing I would like to ask is that there be a plainly obvious note on the twhirl home page (under the installer widget) letting everyone know that there is this problem.
For whatever reason my 0.8.6 was working just fine, and I would have not messed with it had I known I'd be without my favorite twitter tool.
I’m disappointed-and-unpleased
-
Inappropriate?Adding myself to the list of Ubuntu users who love Twhirl. Would be happy to see a fix. Am currently using TweetDeck however it's not quite Twhirl!
http://search.twitter.com/search?q=Tw... - demonstrates how many Ubuntu users there are out there
http://twitter.com/twhirl - hoping to see an announcement on this page that'll delight us!
@Thomas Knoll, it's great to see you here and I hope you can bring us the good news. ;)
I’m missing Twhirl
-
Inappropriate?@Mark Mandel & any other LINUX user that has this problem:
Twitter apparently randomly makes API changes, problem started.
Twhirl came out next day with a fix for the API changes.
Presumably because air1.5 has cool stuff you can do with it;
Twhirl started using it (who cares why, they're writing the program)
Unfortunate for Linux users, however because
ADOBE is the one who (@MARK MANDEL)
"basically just decided 'oh.. this whole section our user base [of our multi-platform Air, which we advertise as fully multi-platform]... we don't really need to worry about them, they're not important [as the other platforms]. If it works great, but if it doesn't, then they can use another product [or platform], who cares"
So complain to the multi-million $ company, with a support team alone probably multiple times the team of twirl and all of the twirls team's immediate relatives, about LINUX being left out.
Otherwise, if we really want them to "try to figure out the possibilities of a separate release [for linux]", and keep ad's from consuming our precious tweet-space; put a number on it and show them you care about the product by going to http://www.twhirl.org/donate and then paying close ATTENTION to what they say on that page!
Or if your a "poor" open-source-er and really want to use twhirl, like I do, setup virtualBox with the windows key that probably came with the computer, go to adobe, install air1.5, go to twhirl and install it (using the inPage install!!!! another ADOBE problem) and there you go happy twit-twhirl'in
And a special Note:
if you want to beta test, politely post on this forum (that they gave us and even pay attention to, out of the kindness of their hearts), the problem and a description of the setup you are using (ie. what operating system, adobe air, and twhirl versions you are using ) Then wait patiently for them to either respond or fix the problem.
Twhirl Devs: Thankyou again for everything you have put into your test program, it is a huge success and I love using every minute of it and can not wait for future version, and again thankyou providing it free of charge and advertisements.

I think you miss my point.
If the response from the Twhirl guys had been a 'ack! we screwed up, sorry! you're just going to have to wait till 1.5 comes out on Linux', then that's fine, everyone makes mistakes. I understand Twitter makes random changes to their API, and how painful that must be.
But from what @Thomas Knoll is saying, is that they * deliberately * decided not to way in the consequences what they were doing. I'm sure you can understand that viewpoint being rather upsetting.
Maybe I was wrong in the way I interpreted it, but I haven't heard anything from Thomas to the contrary. -
@Bored AsHellion: The point is that the issue could have been fixed without depending on any new Adobe AIR releases. Especially in a 0.8.x version this should obviously be the case.
See Wikipedia for more on that: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maintena...
- michael -
Inappropriate?@Bored AsHellion
"Presumably because air1.5 has cool stuff you can do with it;
Twhirl started using it (who cares why, they're writing the program)"
I think we should care about backward compatibility and ensure that the userbase that is already out there can continue to use their favourite tools.
I agree that Abode should release a Linux version that works with the latest AIR specification, however I hope that in the meanwhile Twhirl can provide a version that uses the older AIR platform - alongside a version for the newer AIR platform.
Twhirl developers have much gratitude and appreciation (+ the wow/awe factor) from me for this brilliant application, I think it's definitely worthwhile making an effort to keep the Linux userbase Twhirl has built over the years. -
@Bored AsHellion, I was just wondering if you can help me here re donation.. have you ever managed to donate to Twhirl? On the donation page, the PayPal button doesn't seem to be there any longer - other than the email address which I'm not sure is still in use now that Twhirl has been acquired by Seesmic. TYVMIA -
Inappropriate? My favorite Twitter app is gone. I second @bjfletcher's comments (including about the donation).
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?I'm sorry to have to let go of my favorite Twitter client. I tried several other Twitter clients for Linux, and Twhirl was the only one that had the functionality I wanted and that made Twitter easy and painless to use. I really hope this will be fixed soon.
I’m frustrated and sad
-
Inappropriate?I have one copy of 0.8.6 that I didn't sign out of, and it's still working. On another machine, I'd signed out and can't sign back in. So if you just stay logged in, maybe you can keep going with this version for a while.
-
Darn, that one stopped working, too... -
Odd, now it _is_ working again! Just doesn't make sense. (Notice me ignoring all of the annoying screeds on both sides here...) -
Inappropriate?unfortunately I have no idea about the donation page stuff, that would be something to ask the develops i guess,
my whole point was the fact that, twhirl is free with no ads, there is no reason to complain about it, defiantly no reason to loose faith in the developers of it, linux is less than 5% of the current OS distribution, Adobe can't even make their crap work right with it yet, so why would you be upset with a much smaller company that is offering this great product at no charge not being able to be sure it works with it? Face it, windows and mac are the important OS to develop for because they have the most users, if your using linux you should already be used to the fact that you have to work with and work around problems you run into, that's half of the fun of linux for me, honestly. Otherwise if you want stuff to just work and people to focus on stuff working right, get a mac or if you can't afford a mac, get a windows system.
Otherwise, be like me and the other understandably sad people, inform them of the problem and wait for them to either fix it or not,
programming is not easy especially multiplatform and multiple services, if you think it is and they made a bad decision on a product that's not even at ver.1,
go and program your own, then give away the work you did for free for everyone to use, then add a forum for people to report problems, then see how you feel when people say "WTF did you do, why don't you care about me, a freeloader that just likes using the program, why don't you quit your day job and work on this project full time to make sure it works completly for me", i'll go ahead and tell you (because i know your not going to do all that, even if you did it probably wouldn't be even close to being as good as twhirl has become in just over a year of development) it doesn't feel good and makes you not want to give away your hard work for free anymore, if you even feel like working on it at all after that,
so either appreciate their hard work and conform to their specifications, or be extremely thankful that they came out with a Separate version that conforms to your specifications.
I'm using ubuntu and twhirl at the same time right now, no problems for me.
Computers can do what ever you want, it's all about the effort you want to put into them to make them do what you want.
I’m to sexy for my cat, whatcha think about that?
-
"The circumstances are such that we can't support Linux at the moment. Sorry guys. You'll have to wait a bit." <--- That would have worked to avoid the grumpy feedback, and the insufferably sanctimonious responses to that feedback. -
Inappropriate?Although I'm a fairly new user, I've already grown to love Twhirl ... just want it working with Twitter again on Ubuntu 8.10.
Without doing lots of blame casting, I can't imagine it would be all that tough to simply backport the Twitter API changes to a special unofficial unsupported "0.8.6-2-linux" release to tide everyone over until a proper Linux compatible release comes along. I'm sure the Twitter API changes don't actually require Air 1.5.
I’m slightly disappointed
-
Inappropriate?all of my insufferably sanctimonious responses, were just cause i'm in this empire of dirt, wearing this crown of shit upon my lier's chair, filled with broken dreams that i can not repair...i hate the time-consuming process of writing programs, otherwise i'd just write my own for me to be able to use to my liking and then keep the source closed and then charge anyone else out the ass for it w/o support for it, then i would create forums just to laugh at people and mock them for having problems they can't figure out, apparently i'd get to spend hours laughing at Linux users that don't know how to work their computers (my how times have changed) it wouldn't matter to me cause i'd still get to use my program and if it had a problem i'd fix it,
originally i just wanted to let people know that adobe air was why twhirl stopped working, but then i realized people don't even care about the work these guys are doing and almost expect things for free, everything would be a different tune if you were actually paying for it, but i mean damn, its the kinda thing that make programmers want to write virrii instead of freeware, and that is not what i would expect from Linux users, so either be like
@Luciano or go back to windows
or don't this has been quite entertaining for me, almost glad twhirl broke itself for linux, just so i had this opportunity
I’m glad i started taking advantage of oppertunities that present themselves
-

marco,
i know you guys have worked hard to support us on this, but could you also release a version that works with AIR linux alpha - v 1.0-20080320 (a lot of us are unable to install linux AIR 1.1 beta, so we're effectively locked out of a lot of applications). the 1.1 compatible release you just released doesn't install on my machine, same as the 1.5 version :(
update: murphy strikes, and three months after trying to install air 1.1 beta and reporting all manner of bugs, i tried installing it today just for kicks, and it worked! so i'm now a happy twhirl 0.8.7 user. but i'm sure there are others out there who weren't so lucky as I -
That was fast! No problems here.Thanks. -
Thanks -
Thank you! We appreciate it. Really. :) -
Still doesn't want to work here.... -
Doesn't work here either. -
Inappropriate?W00t! Back on Twhirl! ^^
Ty Marco, for this 1.1-linux-version of the 0.8.7!!!
Just some hints for others maybe: I had to upgrade from AIR 1.0 to 1.1 and this worked only after uninstalling the prior version.
After installing twhirl-0.8.7-air11.air, I had to enter my username and pass and the color scheme was default.
I also noticed a warning, that I should upgrade to 0.8.7 but I just closed it.
Happy twhirling!
I’m a happy twhirler again
-
Inappropriate?I was able to just download the new package and it worked. Thanks!
I’m a happy twhirler!

Inappropriate?Yay ! 0.8.7-linux works great ! A big "thankyou" to Marco and the Twhirl team.
I’m happy

Inappropriate?Unfortunately, I'm still getting the error that the AIR file is damaged. I'm using AIR b1_091508 and the new twhirl release.
I’m frustrated
-
The latest beta from Adobe site + fixed twhirl from the 1st post on this page works like a charm, mate... -
I'm using Ubuntu 8.10 x64. Could the 64-bit OS be causing the problem? I would have thought that as long as AIR is installed and running properly, twhirl would too but I don't know enough about AIR's technical details. -
This is happening for me, too. My system is not 32-bit, but I am running an older version of Ubuntu - 7.10.
I was able to install tweetdeck the other day and am running it now, and I am using the latest version of AIR. Hmmm. -
Not a big fan of tweetdeck, but I guess I'll give it another shot until twhirl works on my system. -
I figured out my problem. It may not be the same as yours, but -- I was *not* running the version of Adobe AIR I thought I was. Although it appeared I had downloaded it at some point, I had an older version installed. I found this via the package manager and removed it, and then i was able to install the lastest beta. Then, the twhirl install worked. -

I'm now able to get it installed, but it can't retrieve anything from Twitter. Grrr! -
Inappropriate?tested and found working on openSuse 11 with adobe air 1.1 beta. thanks!
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate?Got it installed (needed to completely remove everything and reinstall like Jean-Christoph said) but now it won't connect to the API. It just says it has an error receiving all types of messages.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Twhirl Dev's: Thankyou so very much, twhirl seems to be running even smoother than before, i appreciate your efforts quite a lot, Keep up the awesome work, and thanks for putting in the extra effort for linux, that rocks!
Which, btw, is on eeebuntu 2.0, with Air 1.1beta, and the link for linux installer on the front page, setup and install went through fine, all i had to do was re-enter my password and it signed on no problems!
I guess I should start it's own thread for this, but what is up with donation page as other's asked after i mentioned it, do you still take donations or does the parent company have some other setup for that?
@Christopher Carr
if 1337 means that i RTFM and know how to work my computer, then maybe, still wouldn't think i'm "uber", although i do like that word 'uber'
as far as what kind of crazy i am, the only name i've found suitable is 'Catch 22', but thanks for trying, if you'd like to make more diagnostics of me, your more than welcome to follow bored369, as is anybody
I’m going to be using twhirl, for all my tweeting-needs
-
"Computers can do what ever you want, it's all about the effort you want to put into them to make them do what you want." .... It's that sort of patronizing statement that I find really very annoying. The fact that you feel compelled to ejaculate that sort of thing onto a forum like this raises certain questions. You don't know what people know. But this is a conversation for another place... -
So how do you know I don't know what people know? Oh that's right you must be special, cause you apparently do know what others know.
I think i'd find that conversation highly entertaining so anytime, anywhere, feel free, twitter=bored369, email=bored369["at"]hotmail()com, though i KNOW you won't :)
specialMention:
using a word like 'ejaculate' in a forum like this also raises certain questions (mainly about your ability to separate your multi-tasked thoughts)
Twhirl dev's thanks again, not only have you brought joy to my twittering world with your increadible program, I believe your team, your commitment to your linux user base; played a large role in getting Adobe to buck up and fix their stuff like it should be, thanks for that too! All is well with Linux-Air1.5-Twhirl.0.8.7. -

Inappropriate? Thanks for taking the time to release a Linux version for those of us trailing behind on the Air end of things. Greatly appreciated and nice work!
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate?brilliant response, developers - many thanks.. here's a big :-)
I’m excited about Twhirl's continued development

Inappropriate? Thanks for the fix. It still tells me there is an update, but I'm ignoring it for now.

Inappropriate?HI folks, I'm updating this thread to "solved" since the version Marco rolled out address the problem in the title of this thread. If you are still having issues (or if you have stumbled across this thread in a search) please open a new ticket with information specific to your problem.
I also wanted to thank you all for your passion to use twhirl on linux, even though we aren't able to officially support it yet. Just wanted you to know that we do love our linux users, and are sorry that the emergency release to address API changes put y'all out of commission for a bit.
We appreciate the positive, constructive feedback, and would certainly prefer that approach. But I do understand the frustration that lead to a number of less-than-constructive comments. It reminds me of how my grandmother always use to tell me that it's better to have someone angry at you, than not care about you.... because, if they're angry it at least means they care. =)
I’m trying to setup ubuntu in bootcamp on my mac, cuz I miss my *nix
-
Inappropriate?AIR 1.5 for Linux is now available! http://get.adobe.com/air - twhirl 0.8.7 works great with it.
Just make sure you uninstall twhirl and install it again.
