Why won't my connect button connect?
I just downloaded Twhirl, and I'm trying to connect, and when I hit the connect button, nothing happens! I have my username selected, so why isn't it working?

Hi everyone,
we have been digging deep into twhirl to find the bug causing the problem you all have, and we found a possible reason that might be the culprit.
An updated version of twhirl 0.8.2 that fixes the bug can be downloaded from http://beta.twhirl.org/twhirl-0.8.2-t...
Please update your installed version to this and tell us if it solves the problem for you.
Thanks!

Inappropriate?I had the same issue but quit twhirl & when it re-opened the connect process worked fine. Well except for the crappy twitter API limits being exceeded, but friendfeed worked great.

Inappropriate?I'm having the same problem. I had three accounts in twhirl: 2 twitter & 1 friendfeed. While I had all three open, I was moving the windows around and noticed one had disappeared.
I tried reconnecting to the account. Nothing happened.
I tried deleting the account and re-adding it. Nothing happened when I clicked connect.
I deleted all the accounts and re-added only the one. Still nothing when clicking connect.
I uninstalled Twhirl using AppZapper on the Mac. I waited awhile (well over an hour) then redownloaded & installed Twhirl. I added the account and clicked connect.
In the meantime, I have not tried to access my Twitter account via any other means, so it is highly unlikely it was an issue with the API request limit.
I am using the new version 0.8.2.
Any ideas? This is extremely frustrating.
I’m extremely frustrated.

I am on a MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo with OS X 10.5.3 installed. -
Inappropriate?I have the exact same problem as Scott above. After downloading the new version 0.8.2, I can't connect to my Twitter or Friendfeed account. Selecting it from the list and clicking on connect has no effect at all. Deleting and re-adding the account hasn't helped. Any assistance appreciated.
I’m constrained

Inappropriate?I have this problem after updating too - i'm now running 0.8.2 and Twhirl will no longer connect. Would be great if we could get an update on what's happening. I'm going to see if it's happening on any other APIs..
UPDATE : Twitterrific & Spaz seem to be connecting fine, so it's gotta be something borking with the new updated version of Twhirl..
I’m forcibly silenced..

Inappropriate?Same problems here. Installed, uninstalled, restart installed again ... and nothing doing. I sooo want it to work too
I’m more than miffed!

OSX 10.5.3 -
Inappropriate?I'm both surprised and disappointed that the Twhirl developers haven't at least acknowledged that they're looking into this problem since a lot of us our having it. Can they at least offer us the option to download 0.8.1 to see if that fixes the problem?
In the meantime I'm using Snitter - http://getsnitter.com - and really like the look of the Leopard skin of it on my Mac. I have also been checking out Spaz too - http://funkatron.com/spaz
I don't know about the rest of you, but if Twhirl doesn't acknowledge the problem soon, I may not come back to them even when the problem is fixed.
I’m disappointed in Twhirl's lack of a response.

Inappropriate?Hi all, thanks for your reports. I'll look into this. Adding a comment to your own post with your OS/Version would really help.
-
Can you make version 0.8.1 available for us to try to fall back to? -
OSX 10.5.3 - still not working. -
Scott: You can always find previous versions here: http://twhirl.org/node/9/release -
... except when they're not there, of course. I'm only seeing releases up to 0.8.002 -
sorry, the version numbers are a bit odd here, due to the CMS handling projects. 0.8.001 is twhirl 0.8.1, you'll also see this when you look at the filename for the release -
Thank you. I wasn't aware of that. -
Inappropriate?Hi everyone,
we are sorry you are experiencing this issue. We are definitely looking into it, but weren't able to reproduce it yet.
Please provide as many information as you can about your system (like operating system and version you use).
If you don't see a window after clicking connect, please try to execute the "Reset windows" command from twhirl's dock / sys tray icon context menu. A possible reason for your problem could be that the windows are somehow rendered outside of the visible area of your screen, and this command should bring them back.
You might also want to send us your log files. twhirl writes error messages to a file called "twhirl.log" on your computer. For the location of this file, please visit http://twhirl.org/node/129, it can be found in the same folder as the "accounts.xml" file. Send you logs to info@twhirl.org please! Thanks
Let me say again, we are sorry you have these problems! -
Inappropriate?A short update: thanks to the help from Rick Marshall, we were able to do some tests and narrow in on the error. We will continue to solve the issue and let you know when we find a solution.
If you want to downgrade to the previous version, here's the installer:
http://www.twhirl.org/files/twhirl-0....
Thanks! -
Thank you for work on this. I'll be anxious for that fix. Let me know if you still want my log files. -
can you let us know if you still want our log files? happy to send it through if it helps.. -
Inappropriate?I'm having the same issue. I actually cannot reopen Twirl after I closed it to try connecting again. I have also replaced the newest version with the previous version and it still will not open or connect. The icon is on the desktop and in the start up tray, but is useless.

Inappropriate?Hi, I'm having the same problem. I'm using XP sp2, with all the normal updates. I've got Google desktop going too, if that makes any difference.
-
Inappropriate?the 8.1 version working for me on XP, version 2 not working at all. same problem everyone here had.
I’m annoyed.
-
Inappropriate?I had this problem with a rev a couple back; I don't have it today so this may not work, but look for your firewall's "Allow this app" dialog.
Mine wasn't coming front and center so I wasn't aware I needed to re-allow Twhirl a door.
Hope that helps.
I’m unsure.

I'm on a Mac, so I don't use a separate firewall program. -
Inappropriate?Windows XP Service Pack 3
I had to go into my Firewall setttings and manually add an exception for Twhirl ( start -> control panel -> Windows Firewall, exceptions tab, click Add program. Browse the list for Twhirl, add it then restart Twhirl )
I’m frustrated
-
I don't believe it to be a firewall issue because it worked immediately after downloading the new version on my Mac, then the windows disappeared and it stopped working. -
Inappropriate?Hi
I did have the same problem, when I tried to connect from the shortcut on my desktop, no joy, so I went to my start menu and tried it from there and Hey Presto it worked!!!!!
Max
I’m Happy Now... Nerrr!
-
That isn't the issue for Mac users. -
Inappropriate?I'm beginning to not care if Twhirl fixes this issue or not because I've started using Snitter and Spaz. Snitter's Leopard skin on a Mac looks great, and Spaz has an absolutely gorgeous interface.
I’m indifferent

Inappropriate?palisade14, Dave and Max, thanks for sharing your tips!
Everyone who sees this problem should check his firewall settings to find out if this solves the issue.
While we see from this thread that a few people seem to be affected by this, we haven't seen it ourselves yet. We are preparing a debug version for you that will report a lot more information that will help us to find out what exactly fails when twhirl tries to connect to your account(s).
I'll keep you all updated here, and hope to have a solution for your problem soon! -
Inappropriate?I'm using XP with the most recent version of Twhirl. I've now gotten it to log in for me a few times, but it seems to be fairly unstable, often randoming logging off and back on, or off, but then not coming back on at all, no matter what I try, short of restarting my PC.
I’m anxious
-
Inappropriate?Using XP on a Desktop PC and a laptop, I recently installed Twhirl 0.8.2 on both and had the same initial problem on both on first start: I entered my Twitter user name, but clicking the connect button did nothing. I closed Twhirl and opened it again (using the Desktop icon), THEN I got the password window to link to my Twitter account, and it connected just fine.
It seems to have been working OK on both ever since.
I’m excited

Thank you. Looks like it's working as intended, now. -
Thank you for your hard work on this. This new version *appears* to have solved the problem. -
Now could I just request some better-looking (Mac-like) skins for it? ;-) I'll start another thread for that suggestion. -
It still doesn't work for me, I've been having the same problem on Leopard. -
thanks, it appears to have fixed the issue for me. -
Inappropriate?I had the same problem. As I described here:
http://getsatisfaction.com/seesmic/to...
when I though it was mainly a problem with the admin rights.
I just installed
http://beta.twhirl.org/twhirl-0.8.2-t...
now twhirl seems to work.
(Hopefully off-topic: Probably it's unrelated when I had installed the twhirl beta Spybot complaint about firefox.exe being infected by SpyKill. I can't find the fitting registry-key nor the fitting process, so I guess and hope that it's been a false positive by SpyBot. And I did install two firefox AddOns yesterday (both are available on addons.mozilla.org so I don't think they can be the problem) Dunno.)
I’m happy and concerned.
