How do I get rid of the number in the SocialGO blog urls?
How do I get rid of the number in the SocialGO blog urls?
I am looking to convert my website into a SocialGO network. The main content of my site is a blog, it's only about 40 pages and I can transfer all the content manually no problem, that's not too much work
BUT, I can't figure out how to keep my old urls. As far as I see, all the SocialGO urls have a weird number at the end of them, which not only destroys them as far as SEO goes, but also means I can't keep my old urls.
An example would be a url www.mysite/blog/buy-this-product becoming www.mysite/blog/buy-this-product_21
So, instead of having the perfectly seo-optimised url for the phrase "buy this product", instead I have the perfect url for the phrase "buy this product 21" and less optimised for "buy this product".
Nobody searches for the phrase "buy this product 21"
I have spent ages getting back-links to my site with perfect contextual matching with the urls in question, which means I get great rankings in google. I don't want anything to affect that. I know I could do re-directs, I don't want to do this - I want to keep the urls clean, the links clean and keep google loving it.

Inappropriate?Hey Dendrite,
I appreciate that it must be a bit frustrating for you, especially since you appear to have taken such care ensuring that your URLs are search-engine friendly.
At the moment, it isn't possible to remove those numbers from the URL. However, we have had similar questions in the past and it is definitely something worth thinking about in terms of a futre development.
Thanks!
Michael

Inappropriate?OK, thanks
You have someone here that will sign up for a premium site or two immediately if you ever do make change to the url structure!
Cheers -
Inappropriate?same here. and make the words split with hyphens not underscores
so buy-this-product, not buy_this_product -
Inappropriate? The number in the blog url corresponds with the user.
-
Inappropriate?Ryan, I think you may be confused
The number I am talking about corresponds with the chronological order in which the blog posts are generated by the user. It does not correspond with the user, but the post number
So the first post is assigned the number '1' at the end of the url, the tenth post generated is given the number '10' at the end of the url, and so on...
The problem here is two-fold:
Firstly, it makes it difficult to transfer your content over (from a ning site, or wherever) and retain the urls you had. So, you either have to mess around with re-directs, or you lose your hard-earned link-juice from back-links you may have managed to get. So, your page slips down the google rankings, which will lose you traffic and money
Secondly, it has adverse effects when it comes to SEO. It's pretty much essential that you have control over your urls, if you are trying to optimize your SEO strategy for specific keywords. Hence, it makes it more difficult to attain that top-spot in google and, once again, you lose traffic and money
Given that SocialGO is all about monetization, this looks to be a pretty basic mistake in design by the team
So, how should the issue be addressed?
Take a look at a Wordpress blog - Go to Admin >> Settings >> Permalinks - you will see how they allow people to choose their url formatting structure - you can choose from a variety of different formats.
The best option is to choose 'Custom' and type in /%postname%/ - your post title becomes the url - you can choose to use hyphens, underscores, no separation between words. Anything.
This (essential, imo) feature is missing from SocialGO. -
Inappropriate?am sure they will do something abt this
right now they are busy with member billing system i belive....
this is an essential feature i belive .. yet i think if we conduct a poll the majority will go for member billing feature -
Inappropriate?Yes, they do have limited resources at their disposal, so it's a case of priority - they can only do one or two things at a time and let's face it they are doing a very good job!
Permalink structure is one of those features that people never realized they needed until they 'get it'.... -
Inappropriate?:) yep hope this one will get a top priority in their to do list
