Laura, if you're a Songbird employee then you really need to get up to speed on VLC media player as it will offer Songbird some mighty stiff competition.
VLC, like Songbird, is free. And is plays every audio and video format there is. Including .avi files using the DIVX codec.
I use VLC to watch DVD movies.
It's very versatile. -
Inappropriate?Songbird has GStreamer integrated into it's media-core. So, any media formats GStreamer supports will work with Songbird. My personal experience with VLC has been a very minimalistic one. It plays media, that's about it. Songbird is far more diverse than that. Songbird is not just a media player but a Web Media Player that seeks to facilitate an open media web. Much like Firefox has done for Internet standards, Songbird hopes to achieve the same for media standards. As such, Songbird blurs the line between web browser and media player.

I think if you compare that to what VLC can do, you will start to see the difference between the two (very different) applications. You should see links on that page for the roadmap outlining future features.

is similar like
Notepad to MS Word 2007 (or Opensource variants of both, of course ;-)
VLC will always be A LOT faster, but will have WAY LESS features.
So, like ashughes said, trying to compare VLC with Songbird will always be like comparing an apple with a fruit salad => you are getting much more, but that could be negative, if you love apples but hate kiwifruit for example... :o) -
