Folder tree view, like Amarok, possible? how?
Hi!
I've been searching around a bit after a media player that suits me best. (Tired of the bloat:y winamp) I'm looking for a specific function, namely a folder tree view of my music library.
I've heard and seen this work in Amarok but unfortunately I don't use Linux as my primary OS, I use Windows XP.
What I'm looking for is something that can structure up my whole folder of music in a tree structure like so:
Artist 1 (Photo of artist)
+ Album 1 (album cover picture)
- Album 2 (album cover picture)
- Song 1
- Song 2
- Song 3
- Song 4
- Song 5
+ Album 3 (album cover picture)
+ Album 4 (album cover picture)
Artist 2 (Photo of artist)
+ Album 3 (album cover picture)
+ Album 3 (album cover picture)
- Album 1 (album cover picture)
- Song 1
And so on...
Here's a picture
of something similar I've seen in an Amarok screenshot
Is this possible to do in Songbird?
Has it been done?
If so, where can I find this wondrous add-on/plug-in/compilation??!
I would be MOST grateful!
Thanks in advance and Merry Christmas everyone! :)
Best Regards

Inappropriate?Certainly possible, but not done yet.
Good idea (even if I'm not sure, if i would use it), maybe a add-on developers sees this and jumps in.
I’m confident

Inappropriate? This is something I am strongly in favor of having as an option (in fact, I registered to show my support). I think that Songbird is progressing wonderfully, and I love the addon approach which allows for things like this to be available as options. It wouldn't really make sense to be hard-coded in, but if someone made an addon for tree-view filters, I know I and others would definitely make use of it.
As for how I would use it, I'd probably combine it with the "customize filter" addon to give me one tree-list on the left, "pane buttons" to hide the service menu, and "now playing" so I could mess with playlists on a whim more easily (I never save them, personally). Yes, I know, that pretty much makes Songbird look like a really classy amarok/rhythmbox clone... but as-is it's very much in the style of itunes, so the other setup is more to my personal tastes. I don't mind if I have to use a lot of addons to get to that, I'm just happy to have the option.
Hope someone with solid coding experience will deem this worthy of work! Keep up the great work, Songbird devs!
I’m excited

Inappropriate? You can check out the "Directory Browser" add-on by Epskampie
It is not exactly what you want but worth a look!

I’m happy!!! sunshine!!!!

this looks very promising, and if one's directories are properly set up (mine do happen to be), this works out pretty well (at least in theory... I'm not at my songbird computer to try it out). The fact that it does utilize the tree-style setup is promising in that it shows this is doable, if someone wanted to work at it. Some of the problems I'm seeing: the author of said addon does not use songbird anymore, and does not seem to be actively developing this to add more wanted features; I'm under the impression this will only work in the right pane, which is currently where the Now Playing addon resides (someone correct me if I'm wrong on that one); and as previously mentioned, if one does not sort their directories in the style they wish to have this sorted, this will not function in the desired style. Without installing the addon I can only see these three things, but they are rather large hindrances to mass-adoption of this addon as a solution. Hopefully another developer will see this topic and work toward a more graceful solution.
Thank you for pointing this out though, it is very promising to at least see that a sort of tree view is possible! -
Inappropriate? These things are also planned ;you can add your vote to support this idea
