Thanks to Laura for upgrading me to Ubuntu Q/A guy(which won't make me Ubuntu guru quite yet :)
We've had some reports about this issue, like this one:
http://bugzilla.songbirdnest.com/show...
(BTW, there is another workaround in a Comment #2)
and haven't been able to look at closely.
The problem seems to be in Cairo failing to build with Glitz Support on Linux machines using Nvidia beta drivers.
There is a bug filed in cairographics.org:
http://lists.cairographics.org/archiv...
and there are many other posts on Linux forums addressing this problem.
Unforunately, we're still pretty much swamped trying to get Songbird1.1.1 release out the door.
Boosh' workaround is great(in fact he probably knows more about it than I do).
I'll ping our engineers to look at it as well.
Hopefully, the solution will be found soon
Bear with us!
Thanks.

@all (I'm not the Ubuntu guy that Laura is talking about) but could you guys try to remove the libvisual-0.4-plugins package...
sudo apt-get remove libvisual-0.4-plugins
It may work.. it my not.. just testing some things out... ;) Thanks!

Inappropriate?Hi Patterner,
Sorry for the delay in responding to your issue. In case you didn't already know, we recently released Songbird version 1.0, and have been completely overwhelmed by the community's response. As such, we have not had the time to respond to a number of questions about (and problems with) the previous release candidates.
If you don't mind, we would appreciate it if you would download version 1.0 and give it a try. If you are still having this problem, or any other problems, with the update, then please let us know, and we will do our best to respond to your issue in a timely manner.
Thanks for your patience, understanding, and support! -
Inappropriate?Using 1.0 from the website and still having this problem
-
Inappropriate?Same here.
I'm using the .deb for 1.0.0 I got from getdeb.net. Ubuntu Intrepid 32 bits, vanilla packages as far as I can tell.
A bug when freeing some memory, that only causes a crash with some versions of glibc? An incompatibility with the glibc version included in Intrepid? Totally unrelated?
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?Same problem here, Gentoo x86. There are no debugging symbols in the binaries, so backtraces are not helpful.

Inappropriate?Same here on Ubuntu intrepid AMD64 with 1.0.0 from the website.
-
Inappropriate?Same here. IIRC this started when I upgraded to the nvidia 180.x driver series, which fixes a lot of important problems with KDE4.
My system is Gentoo x64.
Here's the output, although it changes slightly everytime I run songbird.

Inappropriate?May be onto something. I switched from the NVIDIA OpenGL interface to the Mesa one and the apps loaded fine. I'm using NVIDIA 180.16
I’m hopeful?
-
Inappropriate?I have the same Nvidia driver version on Ubuntu amd_64. I haven't tried with the 177 driver version...
-
Inappropriate?I downgraded to 177.82 and didn't have any problems.
Going back to 180.16, I removed Glitz support from Cairo, and viola, it worked. -
Inappropriate? Thanks for the suggestion. Removing glitz support from cairo indeed lets me run Songbird. It's an ok workaround for now, but the problem still needs t be fixed properly imho. :)
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate?I am experiencing the same problem, also using NVIDIA 180 driver. How would I remove Glitz support from Cairo as Sean suggests? Do I have to recompile it or is it a configuration setting?
-
Inappropriate?I have no idea how you would go about it in Ubuntu, but yes, you need to recompile the package. In Gentoo this is as easy as removing the "Glitz" USE flag. On Ubuntu you probably first need the sources for cairo and then have to compile/install it manually.
-
Inappropriate?I don't use Ubuntu as Loibisch said, it's simple for us to just recompile without that option. Try taking a look in Synaptic for Cairo and see if there's any versions that mention not having Glitz. You could also try "apt-cache search cairo" from the command line and see if there's anything similar in there.
I do agree, it should be fixed in the proper manner, so that Glitz support doesn't have to be disabled. -
Inappropriate?Loibisch, FYI, made an ebuild for Cairo 1.8.6 (simple move the 1.8.4 ebuild to 1.8.6) and upgraded to that. Didn't help.
I also checked out Glitz from the live CVS at freedesktop.org, and again, didn't help. -
Inappropriate?Same here, it appears to be an nvidia problem in the beta drivers.
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showt... -
Inappropriate? For some reason the problem came back. Didn't use Songbird in a while and even without glitz support in Cairo songbird won't start. :(
Is this bug even on the map of the songbird developers to be fixed?
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Me too..

Inappropriate?@all Ubuntu users: I'm having our Ubuntu Q/A guy take a look at this as you all lost me. He's swamped with verifications for Hendrix now, but I'm sure he'll hop in soon.
Thanks for your patience.

Inappropriate?@all (I'm not the Ubuntu guy that Laura is talking about) but could you guys try to remove the libvisual-0.4-plugins package...
sudo apt-get remove libvisual-0.4-plugins
It may work.. it my not.. just testing some things out... ;) Thanks!

LOL, thanks for hopping in boosh, especially since my "Ubuntu guy" Boris took a quick glance at this and said, I need to look at it when I have more time...ETA MIA. :0) -
This fixed it for me. -
Inappropriate?I'm on Gentoo, but:

It's not confirmed that the problem is caused by new nvidia drivers in combination with glitz? -
Inappropriate?I have had this problem for some months. I removed the libvisual-0.4-plugins package and it now works for me. However, removing the package is not a fix...just a work-around and will no doubt break something else I need.
I’m indifferent
-
@HDave
First off... YAY! I'm so glad it worked!! Woooo
Second... try re-installing it... theoretically/hopefully Songbird should/might still be able to start.. as I believe it is an initial setup/startup problem with the package/Songbird....
(i like slashes if you didn't notice ;) -
Inappropriate?@boosh -- You were right! I reinstalled it and Songbird still works...awesome!
Thanks!
I’m happy

WOOOOOOOOOO!!!! Double Awesome! This makes me happy ;)
Hopefully Boris or someone can find the cause of this issue soon, now that it is narrowed down to fixing the problem for some... Thank You! -
Inappropriate?@boosh: removing libvisual-0.4-plugins solved the problem for me. thanks!
I’m thankful

Inappropriate?
Thanks.

you're a guru to me! :-P -
Inappropriate?Actually, Cairo with Glitz builds just fine. The problems start when Glitz tries to use OpenGL with the recent 180.x version of the NVidia drivers as the "back-end".
As for the given "solutions" to this problem. The first one, compiling without Glitz means that you end up with software rendering in Cairo instead of hardware (OpenGL) rendering. (The latest versions of Gecko use Cairo for its rendering.)
I'd guess the second solution makes the system use the Mesa libraries instead of NVidias libraries when rendering using OpenGL. The problem here is that Compiz won't work at all when using Mesa (no direct rendering?).
Finally, one also have the choice to downgrade to an earlier version of the NVidia drivers.
For Gentoo users, the easiest way to switch OpenGL renderer is by using eselect.
Switch to Mesa: eselect opengl set xorg-x11
Switch to NVidia: eselect opengl set nvidia
Still confused as to how libvisual can fix anything, is there more than one package called that? From the description in Gentoo: "Libvisual is an abstraction library that comes between applications and audio visualisation plugins."
Though, most likely it overwrites NVidias custom OpenGL headers with the Mesa ones?
There's also this strange thing with my "self-compiled" (via emerge) version of Firefox working while the pre-compiled nightly builds have the exact same problem as Songbird...
In the end, I'd garner that the only solutions here are to either patch Glitz to make it able to use NVidias implementation (or whatever the right word is) or to close this as WONTFIX and point to the three above workarounds.
Oh, and if it's not already apparent. I don't really have too much of a clue on what's going on and the above is mostly guesswork.
I’m confused

Inappropriate?I managed to run songbird 1.1 using "./xulrunner/xulrunner application.ini"
I just ran the application, may be some of the features requiring external libraries are not working.. So far, I can seems to play songs.
I’m unsure
-
Inappropriate?Yeah, that works for starting it, here it's: xulrunner-1.9 /opt/songbird/application.ini
Though, here I end up with a blank white empty library and trying to play a remote song gives me:
sb-tabbrowser::handleMediaURL(http://www.zreomusic.com/music/10-oo/...); TypeError: currentView is null
Running in debug mode gives me this on the first run, if it helps:

When I shutdown Songbird I'm told that: windowUtils.js:quitApp() Error: could not stop playback.
Additionally, on every startup Songbird tells me that:
Songbird has detected that your Library is corrupt and cannot be read.
In order for Songbird to function correctly, your library needs to be deleted. This action cannot be undone. You will lose subscriptions, playlists and track metadata edited in Songbird.
Your media files are safe and will not be deleted, but you'll need to rescan them.
Doesn't matter if I've just removed the profile or .songbird2 directory or have choosen the restart option in the dialog. This happens before doMainwinStart.
All the files are correctly created as far as I can tell.
-
Inappropriate? That's because you are using the xulrunner installed on your system. Use the version comes along with songbird.

Inappropriate?Using 180.37 of Nvidia drivers on Gentoo x64 still gives this error.

Inappropriate?@All,
Thanks for all of the useful information in this post.
Bug #15306 remains open to track this issue. -
Inappropriate?Seems to be a 64bit version of Nvidia problem only. I'm able to run Songbird 32bit here just fine.
Though I don't have any 32bit libraries of gstreamer so I can't really play any music. (wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64)
I also got some other error messages when running it like this:
SBAppInitialize:SBRegisterSongbirdProtocol()
TypeError: Components.classes['@mozilla.org/gnome-gconf-service;1'] is undefined
(songbird-bin:26970): GStreamer-WARNING **: Failed to load plugin '/opt/songbird/gst-plugins/libgstautodetect.so': libgconf-2.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
(songbird-bin:26967): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_bookmark_file_get_size: assertion `bookmark != NULL' failed
For those who really want to run Songbird, using a 32bit chroot might work:

I’m confident

Inappropriate?Hi!
I also have this problem. The resolution is simple on my Ubuntu 8.10 machine. All I had to do is to remove libvisual-0.4-plugins package.
sudo apt-get purge libvisual-0.4-plugins
I posted the solution here: http://cviorel.easyblog.ro/2009/04/10...

i am using Ubuntu 9.04 -
Inappropriate?Hello,
I have the same problem:
- Songbird 1.2.0, Build 1146 (20090616030029)
- Ubuntu: 9.04
- Driver: NVIDIA 180
- Card: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation Quadro NVS 140M (rev a1)
workaround:
sudo apt-get remove libvisual-0.4-plugins

Inappropriate? Thanks all, and yeah, you're correct, your work around is our best solution for now: remove libvisual-0.4-plugins. We don't expect that to be a permanent solution and we do still have the bug logged for a future release. Feel free to vote for it here: http://bugzilla.songbirdnest.com/show...
I’m thankful for your patience and support
