How do I set songbird as a standard program (player) in vista?
I wanted to set songbird as my default media player in Vista. I opened the place where I can set standard programs but songbird won't show up in the list of programs. How can I set it as my default player?? (If I don't want to click on every kind of media and then set it to the default player for each kind.)

Inappropriate?I have the same question for Linux. There Songbird does not show up at all as application playing e.g. MP3s.
I’m sad

Inappropriate?I am not entirely sure but I believe this may be a Vista issue (Windows Media Player still hijacks audio files if I select more than 15 in explorer and hit enter).
While it may seem like a chore to manually change each one, most people generally only use a few different file types for audio (*.mp3 *.mp4 *.flac *.wav *.ogg) and video (*.avi *.mpg *.mp4 *.mkv *.rmvb). Ninety percent of your media library (audio/video) is probably comprised of no more than 3-4 file types.
However I do agree that since Vista does not want to play nice, Songbird should have an option to hijack file types as the default application.
P.S. I thought I might also ask why you needed Songbird as the default player? Which files types do you need to set as default? Personally I have scanned my library into Songbird and select and play tracks from within the application. Would you care to elaborate on as to what circumstances not having Songbird as the default player causes issues for you? -
Inappropriate?Sorry to reply to late..
There really isn't the "need" for me to set Songbird as my default player, I used to use winamp, but I have my "phases", when I just like a program and would like to use it like any other one.
So I was just missing the possibility of setting Songbird as a default program - it's not that I can't live without that. But I just expected there to be a solution.
I’m kinda disappointed

I agree that there should be a simple solution. Hopefully this feature is added into a later release of Songbird or an extension developer makes an add-on with this functionality.
In the mean time I recommend scanning all the music you wish to listen to into Songbird's library and just loading Songbird to listen to music.
P.S. You could also file a bug report. While it is not a broken feature of the application, it is a core feature of many programs and the developers may see it as wise to include it in future. -

I have taken the liberty of filing a bug report HERE.Hopefully the issue will be resolved promptly. -
Inappropriate? The bug I filed turned out to be a duplicate of Bug 8551. There is also an older thread here titled Make Songbird Default Player Button with 38 people following it. Go add your vote and hopefully developers will get onto it soon.
