Inappropriate?Which file are you referring to?
Provide a link, please. -
Inappropriate?switchproxy.xpi
-
Inappropriate?Just tell it to open with firefox.exe after all this is a firefox xpi file you want to open...
I’m surrounded by idiots...

Don't discriminate people, just because they have a lower technological skill level, then you might have. To some, file extensions just have no meaning. Like for you, ethics of conversation seem to have no meaning.
A simple "Hello, Joe. Xpi's are extensions for Mozilla based products and can be opened with them. The file you have seems to be a Firefox extension, which you would have to open in that program. Simply drag and drop that file into Firefox, or choose the "File>Open File" command" would have been nice of you.

@tylerstyle
You are obviously uneducated and probably have no life outside posting comments all over the web reflecting the fact you are unintelligent.
I posted a simply answer to this problem and you spaz with your ridiculous reply that also makes no sense. Please go use a dictionary and look up the word discrimination oh and a dictionary is a big book full of meanings to words since you have probably never seen one before. -
@Corpsecrank
Why do you say such things to people you don't know??? You wrote "I’m surrounded by idiots...", man! If you don't want to help, you could delete your Getsatisfaction account. Just go to http://getsatisfaction.com/people/cor.... At the bottom of the page, you can "Close your account".
So long!
BTW: Why do you know it's a Firefox XPI? It could also be a Songbird-XPI!!! -
See that little grey line between my actual comment and the other part you seem to be so concerned with? That line means everything. My signature has absolutely nothing at all to do with my answer to this problem. If my signature is such a big deal then maybe you should disable them or make some kind of rule about them. Rather than harass me because YOU dislike it. -
You were mean and that's that. And even after pointing that out, politely, you again start rambling about.
Please try to be nice out here, or I will have to delete your comments.
Thanks,
Tyler out! -
Pathetic really. You took what I wrote as mean. You and you alone started this from nothing. You threaten to delete my comments and say I am mean. The truth is that I answered the question with a simple answer and when you read it you decided in your own mind what tone it was written in. But please continue with this foolishness I find it amusing. -
I think it was calling people idiots and uneducated that was taken to be mean. You are ridiculous. -
I will tell you what is ridiculous. The fact that my choice in mood and tagline has been turned into something like this. But communities such as this never cease to amaze me hence the reason I posted what I did. -

Inappropriate?Hi, JoeKool,
from which site did you download the xpi-File? If you can add the link here we can reconstruct your procedure.
You can also try out the following:
- In Songbird go to Add-ons and Click on Install...
Browse to your xpi-File (which probably can be used aswell in Firefox) and
in the opening dialog install it.
If it doesn't work with songbird 1.0 or your version, Songbird gives a
message.
- open Firefox and try to place the xpi on it. The install dialog schould open.
- perhaps the xpi is broken. Try to download it again.
- xpi is an install package for Songbird, Firefox and Thunderbird .
Windows does not know how to open it.
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?I'm running Kubuntu and I just want to install an add-on to a nightly build of Songbird...where do i put the xpi file??
1 person says

-
Drag-n-Drop it onto Songbird to install. -

Inappropriate? This post is hysterical. I am 100% behind corpsecrank. I mean come on you actually have managed to prove yourselves as idiots, its just the guys signature get a grip people.
I too have the file problem, dropped it into firefox, d/l the add on but im stuck as to now open it.. the fiile is a pdf for adobe pdf reader thing, i cant get it off the adobe website because comodo safesurf blocks the installation as a attack, and yes ive disabled safesurf. I was trying to get the file form somewherre else and i got this .xpi file thing.
mmm what can i put as an tag line, hope it dosnt offend..

I'm a huge fan of broccoli but I guess I'll let it lie. :0) -
Inappropriate?oh oh i thought of a better one in the shower:
you don't have to be mad to work here but it helps!
by this im really mean your all mad and im a big bad meany.
No seriously this is intended in a humorous way don't cry folks, its okay. -
Inappropriate? What? Don't be racist against vegetables!
Can you describe your problem a little bit more clear? You mean that you can't install an Adobe Reader Addon? Or another Extension from Adobe? -
Inappropriate?Well i cant open pdf's. So i need the adobe pdf whatever. Youll have to excuse me im not up on all the lingo. So when I go to the adobe web site & start the intstall my comodo fire wall, or mainly the safesurf part interupts the installation as i thinks its an attack.
there is alot on differnt web pages about this but i cant find a clear answer. So in short I now have a file which is the installer for adobe pdf but its a xpi. file and i cant open it.
I just want to open a flaming pdf, never had this much hasstle before. ill just stick it on the usb and open it in the laptop, last resort.
Was that clear?? i ramble a little -
Inappropriate?Wow, talk about going way off-topic.
If the add-on you wish to install is for Firefox, drag and drop the *.xpi file into an open window of Firefox. If it is for Songbird, drag and drop the file into an open window of Songbird.
I am not sure if this works with Linux distributions, but it does under a Windows environment. Just give it a try.
I’m somewhat amused at this thread...
-
It works exactly the same in Linux as it does on Windows -
Inappropriate?@shuvo
Anyway, from what I see, SwitchProxy is an extension for Mozilla Firefox, not Songbird. Whilst both programs use XPI for addons, unless the XPI has been designed to accommodate both, it will only work on one or the other.
Whilst Songbird uses the Firefox base, it isn't actually one of Mozilla's projects (its a totally different company known as pioneers of the inevitable). So for that reason, it is probably best to ask the firefox development team for help with firefox (as it isn't really the best place to ask here).
;)
@Pete. Actually, I'd STRONGLY recommend against Adobe Acrobat reader. In the computer security world, its reputation is that its an easy, yet underexploited target to deliver viruses onto your computer. Furthermore, we all know its slow and overweight. Instead, use Foxit Reader. Follow the installation carefully though, as I remember it being an app that installs the ask toolbar otherwise. Uninstall Acrobat first. Its free to use though, just don't install the other rubbish like editor or phantom when being offered upgrades, as they aren't, and keep it up to date!
@Everyone, kazemi is correct. Another way in firefox/Songbird to "File, Open File, choose the .xpi".
@Laura, if you ever try to feed me broccoli, we shall be sworn enemies forever :P
