spotify crashing
Spotify after a while keeps crashing I cannot use the pause button to get it to restart as this brings up the message that the program has stopped working. The CPU is showing 50% spotify when it has stopped responding and only way to close it is in the processes. I am using Vista. We have another PC also on Vista which is showing the same issue.

The specific ad that was causing the crashes has been disabled and we've found a bug that was causing the problem. Hopefully this should resolve most of the crash issues people were having. Thank you to all the posters who commented here, the information was very useful.

Inappropriate?are you running a 32/64 bits version of Vista?
Have you tried to only have Spotify on an no other applications running to see that there is nothing spooking around? -
32bit no havent tried just one running will try that tomorrow while sorting out xmas eve deliveries. -
Today had spotify running opera closed email client closed just ICQ and MSN open but idle. After 30 mins approx it crashed. -
I used spotify on boxing day listened to 8 songs then stopped it playing while playing cd's in media player. Spotify was left open but ot being used the pc CPU after a while shot up to 50% again which made the cpu fan cut in fater making more noise. I checked and spotify had crashed. :( -
Inappropriate?I've noticed the same thing happen - the few times it has happened were when I had put my PC (running Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit) into hibernation. When I resumed it from hibernation Spotify seemed fine to start with but then after a while (30 minutes to an hour) the CPU usage for Spotify jumped up to around 40-50% and it froze.
Could hibernating the PC with Spotify running be causing some sort of problem? -
I had let my PC hibernate a few times but spotify was closed just opera and a drawing program open. I am using 32bit vista premium. Think it is uninstall then reinstall to see if that fixes it. -
Inappropriate?Since the latest client update, Spotify has been freezing on me several times an hour. I haven't checked the CPU usage, I'll try to remember to do so next time it happens though. I do not remember having this problem prior to the most recent update.
As with Florenceanne, I'm running Vista 32bit.
Based on StevenR's response, I believe my laptop did resume from Sleep mode earlier, I'll do a full reboot to see if that resolves the problem. Not a major issue if the reboot solves it, but I use sleep mode a lot on my laptop so hopefully it'll be fixed before too long :)
I’m a little concerned
-
Inappropriate?I've been having the same problem too.
-
Inappropriate?i've been having this. it's done it 3 times to me today with exactly the symptoms described by florenceanne.
i'm using xp. the only other programmes running are utorrent, thunderbird and NOD32, all of which were idle.
I’m a bit irritated
-
Inappropriate?I was gonna show Spotify off to everyone on Christmas day. But the way it's being now I think I'll keep it hidden.
Shame. :(
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?yeah i was gonna just load it up with a huge christmas playlist and keep that running, but looks like i'll probably have to download a load of xmas albums.
-
Inappropriate? Also on Vista, mine crashes following switch user, locking or going onto standby.

Inappropriate?I've since found that hibernation appears to be a red herring, since I've had it happen at other times when the PC has not been in hibernation. So, I decided to run Spotify in console mode (-console command line argument) to see what happens before it freezes/crashes. I saw this:
23:24:53.278 I [ad] Entering ad break (time = 1230420294, length = 30, next break = 1230421494)
23:24:53.280 I [ad] Found ad (time = 1230420294, adclass = 'full banner', time left = 90, length = 90)
23:24:53.282 I [http] GET http://www.nissan-crossover.co.uk/
This appears almost identical to the console log posted in http://getsatisfaction.com/spotify/to... about the same issue in the Mac version, even down the the URL in question (http://www.nissan-crossover.co.uk/).
Could this be a problem with one particular banner ad?

IF that was the case would this also cause it to crash when not playing but still open?
I have uninstalled and reinstalled since will start to retest this week. -
Yes, it seems that it does. Mine was not playing when it last froze. Judging from the console log, it seems that Spotify loads and displays banner ads even if it is not playing and even if it is hidden (which seems a bit of a waste, what's the point of banner ads if there is nobody to see them?).
As a test I tried adding the line "127.0.0.1 www.nissan-crossover.co.uk" to my Hosts file and have been monitoring Spotify. It hasn't frozen or crashed once yet. -
Many thanks so far so good no crash tomorrow will be its test as it plays ow in background all day :D suddenly feel happier. -

Inappropriate?Interesting solution. I like your thinking. Will try that myself today. Any news from support or the developers?
I’m Interested in this great idea to try.
-
Inappropriate?I will be trying this also perhaps as it is only one advert causing the crash spotify staff could find why this advert crashes the program while others don't. Possibly having the advert adjusted so it wil not crash spotify again.
I’m interested in this Idea but would like spotify staff to resolve the problem so adverts can play.
-
Inappropriate?I can confirm that my Spotify also froze while it was showing the Nissan advert.
Last console enteries are...
23:22:57.197 I [ad] Entering ad break (time = 1230506577, length = 30, next break = 1230507777)
23:22:57.197 I [ad] Found ad (time = 1230506577, adclass = 'full banner', time left = 90, length = 90)
23:22:57.197 I [http] GET http://www.nissan-crossover.co.uk/
Now to try the hosts idea see if it still crashes for me.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I had to re add the advert to hosts this time it has worked so far so good.
I’m happy
-
Spotify has played most of the day with no problems, I presume the attempt to add full page of images on cars as a banner is the cause. If you follow the link it is full page not a banner as the console entry above says. -
Inappropriate?I filled the play list up with lots of albums and left it playing over night. Got to it this morning and it's fine. No crash/freeze! So I can confirm that blocking the Nissan advert using the hosts file seems to stop it from crashing/freezing.
Now I just wish that some Spotify employee would look at this thread or respond to my bug report. It's been going on for some time now. Come on Spotify.
But at least I can listen to it without problems now.
I’m happier

The company is wrong I think, I can't do anything in Spotify before it crashes, takes roughly about 2 seconds from start-up to crash. Same problem on all my OS ́s, using Vista Home Premium 32 bit ocn one computer 64-bit on another and XP on the third. Same problem with all three. I'v tried re-installing, restarting, but nothing seems to help. -
Got it to run for about half a song, it crashed and burned and the song I was playing got stuck in a very annoying loop which created a rumbling sound which wouldn't go away unless I shut down the computer.
Only had Spotify for a day, worked fine yesterday, today it won't work anywhere. A Beta I know, but if the general idea is to restart your computer 2 times for each song I think I ́ll pass. -
KingCannon,
Can you contact our support team at support@spotify.com. They can try and help troubleshoot you're issue. There are no mass problems reported with crashes at this time so it's likely a local issue with your pc that we'd like to find. -
Still working fine since the advert was withdrawn here on vista premium not had any other crashes. -
Same for me. No problems since they removed the advert.
Ps never had a reply from support when I had a problem, I emailed them and used the report bug feature. :-/ -
Thanks Andres, I have emailed support now. Hopefully they can help me, seems odd though that I have the same problem on different computers, different OS ́s... -
Inappropriate?thanks Andres glad to hear the problem has been sorted.
I’m happy, all seems to work well again.
-
Inappropriate?Thank you Andres saves me having to go round all computers with spotify on adding to hosts file. keep up the good work so used to the music would miss it.
I’m very happy
-
Inappropriate?I have a similar problem on 1 XP Pro desktop and 1 XP Home laptop running version 0.3.12. Spotify frequently freezes when resuming from hibernation. Uses 25% - 50% CPU and has to be forcibly closed (end process in Task Manager).
