No way to track blog claiming progress?
I understand that the process for claiming a new blog now requires some sort of manual approval, and sure, if it helps you cut back on spammy sites that's fine. However, there does not appear to be any way whatsoever to track that process once initiated. I don't see why established members require approval for their new blogs, but either way, there should at *least* be a "pending approval" section somewhere on the account page. I started the claim process for my newer blog, http://discoverybuzz.com/blog/ (old site, just added the blog side to it), but I didn't receive a confirmation email and have no way whatsoever of knowing if you guys even received it. Considering all the recent screwups lately on your site and the huge amount of dissatisfaction on these boards with stuff simply not working, I don't think it is fair to drop something as important as a blog claim into a black hole like that and forcing us to simply assume that you got the submission.
Also, I know there are issues with claimed blogs showing on user profiles, but shouldn't they show on the control panel at least? My other blog, http://smackdown.blogsblogsblogs.com/ , shows me as an author, but how can I tell if that is the same thing as it being a claimed blog? It doesn't show up in my control panel, aside from being listed as my "url", which from what I understand is not the same thing at all.

Mea maxima culpa.
This issue should be resolved within minutes. Clicking the button *should* take you to a separate claim page, but there was/is a bug.
I’m sorry

You're right, and we are working on exactly what you describe - an interface to let you track your blog through the claim process.
And for your other question: if you appear as the Author of a blog, that does indeed mean that you have claimed that blog.

Inappropriate?Thank you Eric. Any idea on an eta for this?
In the meantime, is there any way at all to check on a submission? Or is there some amount of time we should wait before re-submitting...?
Btw, if you want a quick band-aid, maybe have the submissions check the queue for duplicates, and if the blog is in-queue, just display a message that it was already submitted on such and such date and is awaiting approval, please be patient. Pain in the ass to have to go through the whole form just to see, but at least that way you won't have people make the queue larger unnecessarily.
I’m waiting
-
Inappropriate?Well, the way to know now that it's in the queue is to re-submit and get a Page Not Found message. Definitely not the best way to convey that information. I'll see if we can get an interim status dispay of some such up while we wait for the full solution, but make no promises.
-
Inappropriate?Obviously this is a common problem now with the site redesign and it seems that its taking a long time to get blog claims through the system (I submitted my blog 2 weeks ago and have not heard anything). www.geekcal.com/blog.html How long should we wait until we resubmit? Will someone let us know if more information is needed?
-
Inappropriate?Same problem claimed my blog 2 weeks ago nothing. No support. I am very disappointed with technorati.
I’m mad
-
I have to agree that support is poor -
Inappropriate?Ok, so without any notification whatsoever, now my blog is showing in Technorati:
http://technorati.com/blogs/discoverybuzz.com/blog
However, I am *not* listed as an author. How do I get the code to add the badge to my blog? And how do I complete the claim process? There has been no communication, nothing in my control panel on my profile, now way to know how to proceed. From an author's end user perspective, Technorati is practically useless right now. Where do I go from here? You said if I appeared as the author it meant I had claimed it... does the fact that I don't appear mean it is not associated with my account?
I still can't believe that a site as large as Technorati could make such sweeping screwed up changes like they did without any foresight or the ability to fix it. I mean, wtf?
I’m still disappointed
-
Inappropriate?I don't even understand the process. I haven't been sent a confirmation email or anything, it's kind of weird...
I submitted mine: mrshev.wordpress.com weeks and weeks and weeks ago...
-
Inappropriate?@TechnoEric - ok, it looks like there was *some* progress on this, but it's still missing essential pieces.
I just got the following email:
This is an automatically-generated email.
Thank you for submitting your blog claim on Technorati. Technorati will need to verify that you are an author of the site http://discoverybuzz.com/blog/ by looking for a unique code. We have just assigned the claim token {removed} to this claim. Please visit http://technorati.com/account/ for more details.
Thank you.
When I log into my account, I do see my other two blogs that are claimed, which is awesome, and the one that I submitted, which again is great. However...
With the blog that is still undergoing the claim process, it says this:
Nov 24, 2009. Technorati will need to verify that you are an author of the blog by looking for a unique code. Please use the "Check Claim" button for details.
Unfortunately, clicking on that button does nothing. The page just reloads back to my account page. No "details" about what I am supposed to use for a unique code, or how I am supposed to implement it in my blog.
I’m confused

This is now working. Clicking 'Check Claim' takes you to a page for that claim, where there are further notes. -
Inappropriate?Nice reply times, thanks Philip :)
Btw, in case you guys are still taking suggestions and working on the system, you might want to consider allowing the insertion of a meta tag as an alternative to posting a fake blog post, or perhaps the uploading of a blank text file named {uniquecode}.txt. Most live blogs that have subscribers would view the current method as very unprofessional looking (I know I do), since every single reader who subscribes to their feed will get this fake post.
I’m thinking there is a better way
-
Inappropriate? We're definitely considering several different possibilities that are better than the current ugly token. I'd say, "soon!" but many people apparently measure that word in hours instead of weeks, so I'll just say, "Thanks!"
-
Inappropriate?Ok, I just added the code as a comment to the last post created. I hit the button that says "Update Site Feed Url", which is supposed to trigger a recheck, but according to my logs the "Technoratibot/8.1" bot did not even revist the page (nor did the page really refresh slow enough to indicate something was added to the spidering queue).
Is it expecting a different url by any chance, before it will respider? I checked the feed manually, and you can in fact see the code there.
I’m undecided
-
Inappropriate?I'm looking into this. You shouldn't need to change the URL, but it does look like the "Update" button isn't triggering a recrawl. Not sure why.
-
Inappropriate?Ok, it's respidering now, but not finding the code I added. I added it twice, once to the body of the post, and just to be sure once to the custom excerpt that Wordpress allows (which shows in the <description> portion of the feed).
The feed is here, can you see any reason why the code wouldn't be detected?
http://discoverybuzz.com/blog/feed/
Btw, thank you very much for your help on this. Having this kind of communication and a display in the profile on the progress is a huge improvement. :) -
Inappropriate?Ahhh! Now it says: Nov 24, 2009. We could not find a feed at that URL.
feed://mrshev.wordpress.com/feed/ - why not? works for everyone else in the world...don;'t it? -
Inappropriate?Michael, try http:// instead of feed:// please.
mvandemar, I'm looking into this. -
Inappropriate?mvandemar, I've confirmed with the crawler team that the claim token won't be seen if it is within an HTML comment. I'm sorry, but it needs to be "human readable" for our crawler to see it as valid.
Thanks. -
Inappropriate?@Phillip, just to test, I embedded the code within comment tags (as opposed to the old style html comment indicators), and resubmitted. If that didn't work I was going to test with a span that had the attribute display:none on it. As it is, I received 2 emails 1 minute apart. The first one said that the process failed again, the second said:
Thank you for submitting your blog claim on Technorati. We have successfully crawled your blog and found the claim token, and your claim is now awaiting review.
If someone didn't hand-verify that claim, that would mean that using <comment>{verificationcode}</comment> would be a valid way of invisibly including the code in a post for verification purposes. Of course, it also means that it looks like an erroneous false email goes out before the approved one.
If it does work then you might want to consider putting verbiage in the instructions page to that effect, since I am guess the vast majority of blogs getting added on a daily basis to the site are in fact established ones with a live readership.
