After spending several days discussing the application design with Tim, we're making the decision to include the option of removing the Menu Bar icon within the next major build and release of TinyGrab for Mac.
We are looking into alternative ways of accessing the application's services, such as via the Dashboard, or via the Preference Pane.

Inappropriate?Without a Dock Icon or Menubar Item, it would be very difficult to quit TinyGrab. One would have to double click the application in the Finder, and then use the keyboard command CMD-Q to quit. There would also be no feedback as to whether it closed or not.
I'll have to wait for orders from high up before I can do anything.
I’m thinking this isn't a great idea.

Inappropriate?I would love to see a better-looking menu bar icon, if that is possible. The current one is a bit .. simple.
-
Simple is okay with me! -
Inappropriate?I dont think that a common use-case is to quit the app. It is not that it is too simple, it is that many users wish to keep that area clutter free. I am an app-designer myself, and you have to ask yourself, what value does this icon serve? One of the biggest features you tout is that upload is automatic and url is pasted to your clipboard. This means that the most-used feature does not require the menu-icon at all! You can stick the app in the system-preferences easily, and this way, users can still access settings, without having to clutter up the dock and/or the menu-bar with unfruitful icons.
I’m annoyed with the software design

Inappropriate? How would you know if the image is uploading?
That's one of my main concerns, and before these types of apps were common that was my biggest question; because I didn't know it showed the status in the menubar.
The menubar also serves function to show history, and allow for quick non-screenshot uploading. I believe it has a useful place in the menubar.
As I've previously said, I'll wait for instructions from high up.
I’m still thinking it's a bad idea.

Inappropriate?I have never looked at the status bar to tell if it was uploaded. Almost anybody who is savvy enough to take a screenshot also has growl support. This is how I know. If I didnt have growl, it would be obvious that when I pasted, and it wasnt a TinyGrab link, that I would have to wait a tiny bit longer. You could also still have the audible ding on successful upload.
As for the history and other uploading, I have never used them and would rather have them tucked away somewhere. Do you guys do any analytics on how the app is used? I don't think I stray too far from the average user.
Either way, you could do it like your competition (GrabUp) does it and give the user a choice of whether or not they wanted the menu-bar icon. Put the choice in the hand of the user man!
I’m probably going to have to switch back to GrabUp once they have snow leopard support because they don't have an icon

Inappropriate? Please don't get rid of the dock icon. Instead of the menu bar icon it would be nice to have extra options in the dock icon's context menu. I would like it if there were options to not only upload like on the menu icon but to also take a snapshot as I'm not a heavy keyboard user.
-
Inappropriate?TinyGrab does not take screenshots. The keyboard command for taking screenshots is part of OSX. You're going to have to talk to Apple about a mouse command for that one.
Menubar Icon Hiding is still in the works, other things have taken priority at the moment, I will be getting to this as quickly as I can. -
Thanks, wasn't aware TinyGrab wasn't the one doing the snapshots. I'll be sure to ask Apple about that mouse command... not. -
Sorry about that. The best that can be done is you can change the keyboard shortcut with System Preferences. -
Thank you. -
Inappropriate?@Timi
I have a suggestion!
There could be an option in the preferences to hide and un-hide the menu bar icon, so that the people who care about clutter-free space can have it (at the expense of having to worry whether the app is running or not, and having to quit it manually) and the people who like things as they are can continue to do so.
I say this because I really don't use the menu-bar icon, and don't like the clutter... but if I ever wanted to quit the app or manage the account I could just hit Cmd+[comma], unhide the menubar icon, and then quit it.
Really, that would be the thing that would make this app, quite literally, perfect! -
Inappropriate?I would love the ability to have it just be in the menubar (i.e. no dock icon). This is what Quicksilver does. Other apps like Isolator, Library Books, dropbox, and ShoveBox are all menubar-only (the way I like it).

Click the Hide Dock Icon button at the bottom of the preferences window.
