Why doesn't my webcam work?
When it asks me to choose which webcam I would like to use, and it says I should see myself moving, my webcam works fine, so I pick that one. When I get into a chat with someone, my box remains completely black and no one can see me. In my adobe flash settings, i have set it to "allow" and I have chosen the correct webcam. My webcam works on skype, but not tokbox. I have the latest version of flash. BTW my webcam is a Kinstone KS-188 webcam. Does anyone know a way to fix the problem?

Inappropriate?Hi adsheets,
A common issue is that Logitech webcams probably require a driver update to work properly. Please review the link below:
http://getsatisfaction.com/tokbox/top...
Hi khwee,
While I don't have the information for finding the drivers for that particular webcam, the information on locating the drivers can be found here: http://tinyurl.com/6k9a6k
Note: Yours also sounds like an issue with the drivers requiring an update (generally the issue when a black screen appears).
Special note: Linux machines are more prone to having problems with Flash, if you're using Linux, and I can't give a lot of pointers if you're using Linux (not officially supported). -
Inappropriate?I tried updating my logitech webcam on logitech's website, but it told me that the version I had was too new for the updated drive...
-
Inappropriate?Hi Lassie,
That honestly seems strange. Are you also on a recent version of Flash? What is the model of the cam? -
Inappropriate?Having the same issue. Also have a Logitech Quickcam Express. I can't do video mail, nor Conference chat. This is on a fresh OS install. I can see myself when I select Settings. Both Flash and the driver have been downloaded from the companies websites. This previously worked without an issue. Nothing else appears to be at issue on the system. Any help would be awesome.
-
Inappropriate?Hi Matthew,
It worked before? If so, have you tried downgrading to the previous version of Flash? While rare, this does happen with some camera models.
Link to downgrade: http://tinyurl.com/ev8rn
Would recommend version of 9.0.124 or above. -
Inappropriate?Honestly, I'm doubt it's the problem concerning the downgrade. As I previously was on the version 10 of Flash when it did work. I noticed the problem began when I installed the new Tokbox client. I am not sure if there is some sort of incompatablity or something. I have used the original drivers to the cam that worked fine (and now do not), and the newest from the website. Both with the same result. I have also reimaged the PC twice (yea I have a lot of freetime you'd think). Still nothing has resolved it. Any more help would awesome. Thanks.
-
Inappropriate?Hi,
Flash 10 is actually a couple of different releases. One way to test your theory would be to remove the air app (won't impact your contacts) & see if the camera then works. If not, downgrading to the previous version of Flash may work.
If not, then I have to pass it to engineering. -

this solves the problem

Inappropriate?i have the same problem w/my built in HP webcam on my laptop.
The cam used to be initialized fine, i run ubuntu 9.04 but all the sudden a few weeks back it refused to work.
i know the cam works fine, as i've tried it in various other programs (skype, built in camera monitor etc) and it works fine in windows (but then the audio doesn't work right)
i do have flash 10.xx installed, how would i downgrade?
~j
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? You should be able to find downgrade information for Flash here:
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewC... -
damon~
that link is dead :S i think it's cuz it got cut off after the 'C' can u post it again for me? (oh btw i got tokbox working in windows again but i would still prefer to fix it in ubuntu)
thanks for your help!

Inappropriate?I have the same issue, but Flash doesn't seem to be the issue with me. I've tried downgrading to several different versions of Flash 10, and I can't use Flash 9 on this website. Before the Tokbox overhaul that happened a while back, my camera worked perfectly fine with this website. Now, that's not the case. Any other suggestions?

Inappropriate?vahncase~
yeah i tried the flash trick w/no luck as well....i really hope that whatever has caused this glitch gets righted so i can use this awesome service on ubuntu again....untill then i'll have to put up w/ windows :s

I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?Hi,
We don't officially support or test Linux at this time...so we can't provide a lot of pointers:(
Link for downgrading: http://tinyurl.com/r59ere
I would also make sure the drivers are updated on the cams (could cause issues; not 100% because of the not fully supporting Linux issue). -
Inappropriate?damon~
thank you for the info and the help! i appreciate it a lot....i'll keep tinkering an stuff....andhopefully i'll get lucky with it [and if i do i'll probably post how i managed to help others using ubuntu....if that's allowed]

Inappropriate? My cam is having the same issue. I'm using a logitech with flash on firefox. I tried downgrading etc. My cam works everywhere else, and I mean absolutely everywhere else. AIM, Yahoo, MSN, skype, stickam. So I think the issue isn't with my cam, or my flash. So anyone have any other ideas especially since this appears to be a wide spread problem?
And yes, like others I can try to reset my cam settings and troubleshoot my cam. There my cam works with the "pick the cam with the moving image" but when I click save the black screen stays.
I’m pissed off
-
Inappropriate?my cam finally started working AFTER i updated my flash (im using firefox in ubuntu jaunty. the newest version of firefox has a flash security update). to get it to where i could set the camera to work i had to go to a site (that i own) where i have a tokbox widget up and set my camera from there (WITHOUT logging into tokbox or my IM software)
after i did those two things (in that order) it started to work!
~j
I’m satisfied

Inappropriate?Hi yellowrabbit,
Not a widespread problem at all (we have many thousands of people that use the site every day w/o issue). What camera & operating system are you using? The *general* cause of a black screen is camera drivers that aren't updated.
As mentioned in this thread as well, Linux will cause issues most of the time because we don't officially support Linux just yet. -
Inappropriate?I'm using a logitech quickcam chat but I also tested my roommates microsoft lifecam vx3000--- both receive black screens. All drivers are up to date.
I'm using windows vista.
I don't understand why my cam would work everywhere but here. Wouldn't that seem to suggest that it isn't my cam but another issue on your end? -
Inappropriate?Ok, just an update. I uninstalled my cam and reinstalled everything so it was fresh and new. I tested my cam with tokbox again, and I still receive a black screen.
I went to stickam.com and tested my cam. I noticed they use similar technology. I have to have flash and go through the exact same set up as with tokbox. My cam works there no black screen.
I also have a software called manycam and with that I can display still images, my desktop even without having my cam in my usb. It has worked on stickam and on tokbox in the past (up until last night). Now, stickam still recognizes it but tokbox continues to give me a black screen yet I can preview my cam in the fix my cam setting box.
So it isn't my driver, it isn't my flash, it isn't my operating system. Everything worked fine with tokbox until last night. -
Inappropriate?Hi yellowrabbit,
Ok, one more test...
Does it work ok with YouTube?
I can file a bug if it doesn't. I will need to get a Flash trace, however (send to contact@tokbox.com or bugs@tokbox.com).
1. Click somewhere on the blue background of the site.
2. Hit the [Tab] key on the kbd
3. Press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+D (Ctrl+Option+Shift+D on Mac)
RESULT: You should see a whole pile of text
4. Press Ctrl+A to select-All (Cmd+A on a Mac), or right-click and
Select All
5. Press Ctrl+C to copy to the clipboard (Cmd+C on a Mac)
6. Press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+D again to restore the normal view to the site -
Inappropriate?Just tested on youtube. It recognizes my cam, I was able to make a video and upload it from my webcam.
I have tried to do the flash trace but no text appears at all. I'm not on a mac but a PC, and I use firefox not i.e. The only thing that happened after trying the steps several times was firefox asking me if I wanted to bookmark the page. -
Inappropriate? The commands (not Mac) for getting the trace should work on Firefox. Are you clicking on the blue background of the site to start?
Can you clear your Flash cache & then try again?
This is the actual link to clear your Flash cache: http://www.macromedia.com/support/doc... -
Inappropriate?Ok, cleared and nothing is still appearing. By the way, I found a temporary fix. I was complaining to a friend about the problem and he said to test to see if just my mic would work because I have a front mic not an integrated one. I tested that and my mic worked and as soon as I clicked save on my mic suddenly my cam started working and I had no black screen. However I switched to no mic and same black screen. It just works when I start my mic then somehow my cam is recognized.
-
Inappropriate?I also use Mozilla Firefox on Windows Vista, and I did exactly what Yellowrabbit did by reinstalling my busted microphone, and my cam works again! I don't know how exactly this works, but for now, I'm just glad I can use this website again.
-
Inappropriate?Yeah, it's weird. Can you get a flash trace, vahncase? I tried to but nothing pops up for me maybe if you get one and this is a bug tokbox can fix it.
-
Inappropriate?my webcam doesnt work either....im using a usb webcam that doesnt need to install. i dont know why it si not working

Did you try running through the camera and mic settings on TokBox? Do you have Skype or any other program that uses a webcam running in the background?

Thank you for sending those details. Are you using the TokBox AIR client? If so, would you mind testing something out for me? Remove the air app (won't impact your contacts) & see if the camera then works on the website. If not, downgrading to the previous version of Flash may work.
Lauren -
Inappropriate?Thank you for your reply`````
Yes i am a user of TokBox AIR, and my cam can work use that, but can not work use the web version. -
Inappropriate?Czhaixin
Do you have the AIR client shut down when you attempt to use the web version of TokBox? If the AIR client is 'using' the webcam, the web version of TokBox will not be able to access it.
Can you give that a try?
Thanks!

Inappropriate?Dear TokBox Support Engineers -
First of, thanks very much for the expert help you are providing. I am experiencing the same issue: my webcam and mic do not seem to work on TokBox, while they do work on Skype. I downloaded the latest Flashplayer (10) and am using Creative Webcam. Please let me know if there is any known remedy for this issue with the equipment I am using. Thank you. Michael
I’m unsure
-
Inappropriate?Hi Michael,
Do you have Skype running in the background when you attempt to use TokBox? If so, the camera may already be in "use" by Skype, so you need to shut down the program so that TokBox can detect your camera.
Also, have you gone through our cam mic settings on TokBox? Click My TokBox, then you will see a cam mic settings option. A new window will pop up and make sure to follow the onscreen directions.
Thanks,
Lauren -
Inappropriate?Have no webcam or mic on a netbook with Ubuntu 9.04 in Firefox but works fine with Google chrome with flash.
Exit other clients such as Skype before opening Tokbox .
Seems it is a flash related isue with Firefox.
I’m confident
