Hi Guys,
We are actively ridding the system of spammers, it's true. A large number of "re-tweet" accounts have been removed in the last 24 hours. (A "re-tweet account" is an account that is following many people, and simply duplicating messages from the public timeline instead of posting original updates.)
If your follower number drops, this may be why. If you notice that you're missing numerous followers and you're absolutely sure they are not spammers, please send a request to support with the user names of the people in question, and we'll check it out for you.

Inappropriate?I lost two followers within the last 2 hours, users who have frequently attracted complaints (and attention from Twitter) for their unsolicited mass following behaviour. I suspect Twitter has frozen their accounts again - either temporarily as last time (after which their gigantic Following lists were pruned by a factor of 10 or 100), or maybe even permanently, since most mass followers represent an unjustifiable burden on Twitter's limited resources.
I'm perfectly happy to be followed by any user who is interested in reading my posts - after all, that's what Twitter is for - but I don't believe that anyone who follows 14,000 persons can read much of the vast Twitter torrent flowing their way.

Inappropriate?Yes, I noticed some chatter about this.
For example: @emilychang noticed and tweeted about it. Her friends responded. The consensus seems to be that Twitter is clearing out spammers. I hope that's true!
And you'll find a lot of people commenting that they've lost followers in this summize search
Fwiw, I've always assumed that my followers count isn't that accurate because the number of followers in my home page doesn't match the number of followers in my mobile home page. -
Inappropriate?My followers have been dropping too. However, Twitter makes it next to impossible to check your followers* I haven't bothered to look to see who's leaving.

Hi David! I completely agree with you and it's very frustrating when trying to manage our followers. I'm fairly new at this and can't seem to figure out who's coming or going. If Twitter can make this feature much easier to use then I'll be as happy as a hog in a mud pen :-) -

I know from support emails that Twitter has started to shut down accounts that they've determined to be spam bots. Do you suppose that can explain your drop in followers?

Inappropriate?i went from 34 followers to 14 in just an hour or less this evening. can someone help fix it for me please? my username is mio81
i'm not a power user, i haven't been with twitter long (a few weeks), and i know i had a few spam followers... but a good few real followers have gone (and someone, when i check their pages, they are following loads of other people - just me).
