Unable to send a DM to someone who's already following me
I'm seeing reports from people who say they're unable to send DMs to someone who is already following them.
For example, @fiercehugs has a tweet that mentions this:

Hi guys,
This is a bug, we're working on fixing it. Direct messages can still be sent from your phone, from API clients who support Twitter Commands, and from the web box using d+username+message. Attempts at using the icon from the Direct Message Inbox will result in an error.
Thanks for your patience while we get it fixed!

Inappropriate? At first I thought it was a Google Chrome problem (Chrome doesn't display FaceBook or Flickr properly, so I assumed it was something peculiar to the browser). So I did what any self-respecting semi-geek does... I tried MS Internet Explorer. Same problem.
The curious thing about it is that it seems to affect only my latest follows.
Most messages work smoothly. But the two latest followers don't. They can write to me, but I can't write to them, unless I open their profile page and DM from there.
I've asked one of them to unfollow me, and then refollow, and that made no difference.
I've also tried clearing my page cache, to see if it was a caching issue. Not entirely sure the cache cleared. (I pressed the CTRL key, and clicked Chrome's 'Refresh' key. In Firefox, that forces a cache-clear. And since Chrome's based on Mozilla, I expect it does the same.)
No luck.
Baffling issue.
Blue skies
love

Hi Roy. If it's not too much trouble, could you include here the names of the users that you have trouble DMing... in case that helps Twitter with whatever troubleshooting needs to be done?
Also, do the names of those followers appear in the drop down list when you're on the http://twitter.com/direct_messages page? -
Inappropriate?@mdy The problem looks limited to the http://twitter.com/direct_messages page. The follower does not show up in my drop down list. ALSO, if I try to DM using the DM-reply icon next to their DM to me, I get the error saying I can not DM someone who is not following me. Screenshot attached.
I have this problem with (so far) yoga_mama (who is having the same problem with me) and DailyGrommet (who CAN DM me but I can't DM her).
From my twitter home page, I can d-space-follower and the person gets my DM. I can also go to the follower's twitter page, click on the "message" link, and DM them using that link (because we are following each other, I get the "message" and "nudge" links).
Also, I have later followers with whom I am not having the problem. However, the two I identified are relatively recent followers (in the last week).
THANKS!

Inappropriate?People are clicking Follow then getting a message saying they've added me when they have not. These people do not appear in my Followers list and are not regarded by my Twitter account as Followers, but are somehow able to DM me. They are not being added properly; it is not just a DM issue. I have to ask people to Unfollow me and then Follow me again, via the public timeline and @ messages. Users affected in last 24 hours or so: @mdy , @mudslidemama , @buzzbooster , @smallbizbee.
I’m about to pounce on you
-
Inappropriate?I'm having this same problem too. Has it been corrected? I have several followers that I would like to DM back but can't because they aren't showing up in my DM list.
-
Inappropriate?10Best, can you try clicking on the username of the person that you want to send a DM to, so you go to their profile page? Once you're there, do you see the "message username" link in the right sidebar?
If yes, please try clicking that "message username" link and see if you're able to send a DM from there. Some people had success with this workaround. -
Inappropriate?I too have attempted to follow @MikeHammontree, received a message that I am following him yet never has he appeared in the list of people I am following, or have I appeared in his list of followers.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Yes - I would just like to be able to DM more than the limited amount of people showing up on my Twitter account (even though there are more that I could DM). Am I doing something wrong? Confused
I’m confused

You can only DM people who are following you. If they are not following you, you can send them @ reply messages, but those messages are not private. For example, to send me a message (since I am not following you) include @conniecrosby in a regular Twitter post. Cheers. -
