Weeding out the posers
Is there any way to verify that the person I'm following is truly who they say they are?

Inappropriate?Ok, I don't mean to be a smart aleck, but you could just ask them a question that they SHOULD know and see if they get it right - otherwise, I don't think there's an equivalent of a Verisign for Twitter as far as I know

Inappropriate?I refer more to the celebrities that are twittering. It seems there are several versions of a couple of them.

Inappropriate?I know, it's sort of a drag. There's been lots of talk about http://www.exectweets.com/, but they're hardly celebrities. I know Lance Armstrong tweets on his own - everyone else is really hit or miss : (

Inappropriate?Sometimes the media will verify a Twitter account. Or another celebrity will... I think I recall Wil Wheaton verifying Levar Burton and/or Brent Spiner. Ellen Degeneres revealed her Twitter name on her show.
A more recent "scandal" is celebrities who do have official accounts, but who use agents, or ghost writers, to update their Twitter, either openly like Britney Spears, or secretly. In other words, they don't write their own tweets some or all of the time..
I’m hoping this helps
